In order to study the influence of the change of the guide vane airfoil on the flow characteristics in the draft tube of a reversible hydraulic turbine, a reversible hydraulic turbine was used as the object of study, and the effect of the change on the flow pattern, energy loss, and pressure pulsation in the draft tube area was studied based on the SST k-ω turbulence model. The results show that under low flow conditions, the modified movable guide vane directly affects the direction and speed of water entering the draft tube, reduces the density of vortex in the draft tube area, reduces the impact on the near wall of the draft tube during the rotation of the vortex belt, and improves the stability of the unit operation. The turbulent energy comparison graph shows that the energy loss in the bent elbow section and the diffusion section of the draft tube is reduced, and the energy return coefficient of the draft tube is improved by calculating that the energy recovery level of the draft tube is improved under different operating conditions. A comparative analysis of the pressure pulsation in the draft tube area before and after the modification in combination with the development of the vortex belt shows that the modified movable guide vane effectively reduces the vibration intensity in the draft tube area and improves the stable operation threshold of the unit. The increased demands of compact modern aero engine architectures have highlighted the problem of outlet guide vane (OGV) buffeting in off-design conditions. This structural response to aerodynamic excitations is characterised by increased vibration, risking structural fatigue. Investigations focused on understanding, mitigation and avoidance are therefore of high priority. OGV buffet is a type of transonic buffet caused by unsteady shock movement, but the exact parameters driving it are not fully understood. To try and understand them, this paper examines the buffet of a quasi-2D OGV geometry. Parametric studies of the incidence angle and inlet Mach number were performed. Forcing frequencies for both studies were found to be close to the experimentally detected frequency of vibration in the first bow mode, which demonstrates that buffet is driven by quasi-2D flow features. Increasing the inlet Mach number increased the dominant forcing frequency, whereas increasing the incidence yielded little change. Profiles of unsteady pressure amplitudes were shown to smoothly increase in magnitude with an increasing incidence and inlet Mach number. Full article

The effect of the swirl clocking on three-dimensional nozzle guide vane (NGV) is investigated using computational fluid dynamics. The research reports the loss characteristics of leaned and swept NGVs and the influence of swirl clocking. The three-dimensional NGVs are built by stacking the same 2D profile along different linear axes, characterized by different angles with respect to the normal or radial direction: ε = −12° ~ +12° for the leaned and γ = −5° ~ +10° for the swept airfoils. A total of 40 models are analyzed to study the effects of lean and sweep on aerodynamic performance. To investigate the influence of swirl clocking, the analysis cases include the center of the swirl that was positioned at the leading edge as well as the middle of the passage. The prediction results show that the relationship of the changes in mass flow rate and throat area are not monotonic. Further observation confirms the redistribution of loading and flow angle under different lean and sweep angles; thus, three-dimensional design is a key influencing factor on aerodynamic performance. In the presence of swirl clocking, NGV performance is changed significantly and the findings offer new insight and opportunities to improve three-dimensional NGV airfoil design. Full article
