Climate change-induced extreme weather events increasingly threaten public health, with a particularly acute impact on the mental well-being of urban populations. This study evaluates regional disparities in mental health outcomes associated with climate-induced extreme weather in urban environments, where social and infrastructural vulnerabilities exacerbate environmental stressors. We synthesized data from cohort and cross-sectional studies using both traditional frequentist and Bayesian meta-analytic frameworks to assess the mental health sequelae of extreme weather events (e.g., heatwaves, floods, droughts, and storms). The traditional meta-analysis indicated a significant increase in the odds of adverse mental health outcomes (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.07–1.57). However, this global estimate was characterized by extreme heterogeneity (I2 = 95.8%), indicating that the risk is not uniform but highly context-dependent. Subgroup analyses revealed that this risk is concentrated in specific regions; the strongest associations were observed in Africa (OR = 2.23) and Europe (OR = 2.26). Conversely, the Bayesian analysis yielded a conservative estimate, suggesting a slight reduction in odds (mean OR = 0.92, 95% CrI: 0.87–0.98). This divergence is driven by the Bayesian model’s shrinkage of high-magnitude outliers toward the high-precision data observed in resilient, high-income settings (e.g., USA). Given the extreme heterogeneity observed (I2 = 95.8%), we caution against interpreting either pooled estimate as a universal effect size. Instead, the regional subgroup findings—particularly the consistently elevated risks in Africa and Europe—offer more stable and policy-relevant conclusions. These findings emphasize urgent, context-specific interventions in urban areas facing compounded climate social risks. Full article

Acrylamide is a heat-induced food contaminant that can be formed through the Maillard reaction between reducing sugars and asparagine in carbohydrate-rich foods. It is recognized as having carcinogenic, neurotoxic, and reproductive risks, prompting global regulatory and research attention. This review synthesizes recent advances (2013–2025) in understanding acrylamide’s formation mechanisms, detection methods, mitigation strategies, and health implications. Analytical innovations such as LC–MS/MS have enabled detection at trace levels (≤10 µg/kg), supporting process optimization and compliance monitoring. Effective mitigation strategies combine cooking adjustments, ingredient reformulation, and novel technologies, including vacuum frying, ohmic heating, and predictive modeling, which can achieve up to a 70% reduction in certain food categories. Dietary polyphenols and fibers also hold promise, lowering acrylamide formation and bioavailability through carbonyl trapping and enhanced detoxification. However, significant gaps remain in bioavailability assessment, analysis of metabolic fate (glycidamide conversion), and standardized global monitoring. This review emphasizes that a sustainable reduction in dietary acrylamide requires a multidisciplinary framework integrating mechanistic modeling, green processing, regulatory oversight, and consumer education. Bridging science, industry, and policy is essential to ensure safer food systems and minimize long-term public health risks. Full article

Aquaculture has grown rapidly worldwide and has become a key source of food and employment opportunities. However, its expansion faces environmental, health, reproductive, and technological challenges that threaten its long-term sustainability. In this context, biologists play a crucial role in promoting sustainable practices and integrated management of aquaculture systems. This article reviews their main contributions to animal health, genetic improvement, assisted reproduction, and resource conservation. They also highlight their leadership in applying advanced technologies, including biotechnology, nanotechnology, and genetic engineering. Moreover, this study explores emerging research trends and emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary training to address the evolving demands of the sector. This underscores the need to strengthen collaboration between science, technology, and public policy to ensure sustainable aquaculture. Enhancing the role of biologists is essential for overcoming current challenges and advancing efficient, ethical, and environmentally responsible aquaculture systems that meet global demand. Background: Globally, stroke is a significant health problem and is considered one of the leading causes of mortality and permanent disability worldwide. Nurses are key stakeholders and integral members of the stroke care team, contributing to every stage of care. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effects of a nurse-led stroke training program on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of registered nurses working in Berea primary health care facilities, Lesotho, before and after an educational intervention. Methods: To evaluate the effectiveness of the nurse-led intervention, this study used a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. Participants completed a structured questionnaire before the intervention to assess their baseline knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to stroke. Following the intervention, which consisted of educational sessions led by trained nurses, the same questionnaire was administered again to measure changes in participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Paired t-tests compared results. Results: A total of 34 registered nurses from 18 primary healthcare facilities participated in this pre- and post-intervention questionnaire study. When comparing knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to stroke before and after the educational intervention, the increase in correct response rates was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The training evaluation received positive feedback from the participants. Conclusions: Structured nurse-led educational interventions enhance nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices in stroke care, leading to improved patient outcomes and stronger community-based prevention. These findings highlight the need to integrate continuous stroke education into nursing policies and primary health care practice. Full article

Air pollution represents one of the foremost environmental and public health challenges of the twenty-first century, with differentiated impacts according to the socio-economic and urban conditions of affected populations. It therefore remains necessary to integrate social and spatial factors into air quality assessment, going beyond purely physicochemical approaches. This study aims to develop a socio-environmental index to assess air quality (SAQI) based on particulate matter (PM) concentrations in two urban areas of Bogota (Colombia). The methodology is structured in three phases: (i) a global review of reported socio-environmental indices over the past decade, (ii) construction of the index via integration of environmental and socio-economic variables collected in the locality of Kennedy, and (iii) comparative validation of the index in the locality of Barrios Unidos to assess robustness and transferability. The structure of the proposed SAQI assigns 45% weight to the socio-economic dimension and 55% to environmental exposure (PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations). During the development phase in Kennedy, annual PM2.5 concentrations were systematically found to exceed World Health Organization guidelines by factors ranging between 4.0 and 5.7 (24.5 ± 2.89 µg/m3). The comparative application in Barrios Unidos (SAQI = 12, “good”) and Kennedy (SAQI = 21.8, “acceptable”) revealed an 81.5% socio-environmental gap driven by PM concentrations up to 49.8% higher and greater social vulnerability in Kennedy. The methodological divergence compared to the local technical index—IBOCA (45.2 in Kennedy)—underscores the added value of the SAQI developed to capture effective socio-environmental risk. The SAQI developed in this work is a potential decision-making tool that guides public policies toward fairer and more equitable air quality management in urban areas of developing countries. Plastic pollution poses severe threats to ecosystems, human health, and economies as plastics fragment into macro- and microplastics that accumulate across marine and terrestrial environments. Conventional monitoring is constrained by scale, cost, and resources, particularly in under-resourced regions, whereas citizen science provides an inclusive, community-driven alternative for data collection, analysis, and remediation to support evidence-based policy. This systematic review advances the field through three novel contributions: a refined participatory typology that explicitly prioritizes co-creative models for equitable engagement in the Global South; the first comprehensive synthesis of direct citizen involvement in plastic bioremediation, including community microbial isolation, household biodegradation trials, and real-world testing of biodegradable materials; and a new conceptual framework positioning citizen science as the central nexus linking upstream prevention, technological innovation, bioremediation, and global governance. Findings highlight large-scale geotagged datasets, behavioral change, and policy influence, while persistent challenges include data standardization, digital exclusion, and Global North bias. We therefore advocate institutional mainstreaming through dedicated policy offices, decolonial integration of indigenous knowledge, and hybrid citizen–lab validation pipelines, especially in underrepresented regions such as Africa, establishing citizen science as a transformative mechanism for participatory and equitable responses to escalating plastic pollution. Climate change is the greatest health threat of the 21st century, with healthcare contributing approximately 4–5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Decarbonising healthcare, the deliberate reduction of emissions across all healthcare activities, is essential to reduce the health sector’s environmental impact while maintaining equitable, high-quality care. Preparing future health professionals for sustainable, low-carbon practice is increasingly recognised as critical; however, education on healthcare decarbonisation remains inconsistent and weakly embedded in curricula. This scoping review mapped existing educational resources for pre-registration health profession students. Following the JBI methodology, six databases (Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and GreenFILE) were searched in April 2025 (updated in October 2025). Data were thematically analysed. In total, 32 studies met inclusion criteria, comprising 17 mixed-methods, 11 quantitative, and 4 qualitative designs. Most interventions were multimodal, addressing sustainability or climate change through simulation, digital, formal, or didactic methods. Knowledge and attitudes were the most frequently evaluated outcomes. Thematic analysis identified knowledge and awareness, attitudes and emotional responses, behavioural intent and action, identity formation through collaborative learning, and barriers to decarbonisation. Findings suggest that blended, interactive, and technology-enhanced education improves knowledge, attitudes, and identity, but sustained impact requires longitudinal, skills-based, and policy-aligned interventions to drive meaningful healthcare decarbonisation action. Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive environmental pollutants, widely distributed from aquatic ecosystems to the terrestrial food chain, and represent a potential route of human exposure. Although several reviews have addressed MP contamination, a critical synthesis focusing on pathways through which consumer goods directly enter food and beverages, along with corresponding industry and regulatory responses, is lacking. This review fills this gap by proposing the direct release of MPs from common sources such as food packaging, kitchen utensils, and household appliances, linking the release mechanisms to human health risks. The release mechanisms of MPs under thermal stress, mechanical abrasion, chemical leaching, and environmental factors, as well as a risk-driven framework for MP release, are summarized. Human exposure through ingestion is the predominant route, while inhalation and dermal contact are additional pathways. In vitro and animal studies have associated MP exposure to inflammatory responses and oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, and genomic instability as endpoints, though direct causal evidence in humans remains lacking, and extrapolation from model systems necessitates caution. This review revealed that dietary intake from kitchen sources is the primary pathway for MP exposure, higher than the inhalation pathway. Most importantly, this review critically sheds light on the initiatives that should be taken by industries with respect to global strategies and new policies to alleviate these challenges. However, while there has been an upsurge in research commenced in this area, there are still research gaps that need to be addressed to explore food matrices such as dairy products, meat, and wine in the context of the supply chain. In conclusion, we pointed out the challenges that limit this research with the aim of improving standardization; research approaches and a risk assessment framework to protect health; and the key differences between MP and nanoplastic (NP) detection, toxicity, and regulatory strategies, underscoring the need for size-resolved risk assessments. Dynamics of PM2.5 Emissions from Cropland Fires in Typical Regions of China and Its Impact on Air Quality

Cropland fires are an important source of air pollution emissions and have a significant impact on regional air quality and human health. Although straw-burning ban policies have been implemented to mitigate emissions, the dynamics of PM2.5 emissions from cropland fires under such stringent regulations are still not fully understood. This study utilizes PM2.5 emission data from the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS), land-cover data from CLCD, and PM2.5 concentration data from ChinaHighAirPollutants (CHAP) to examine the dynamic evolution of PM2.5 emissions from cropland fires under straw-burning ban policies across China and to assess their environmental impacts. The results show that the 2013 Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan initiated the development of provincial straw-burning ban policies. These policies resulted in a drastic reduction in PM2.5 emissions from cropland fires in North China (NC), with a 65% decrease in 2022 compared to the 2012 peak. In contrast, a notable lagged effect was observed in Northeast China (NEC), where the increasing trend of PM2.5 emissions was not reversed until 2017. By 2022, emissions in this region had declined by 53% and 45% compared to the 2015 peak and 2017 sub-peak, respectively. Moreover, significant regional differences were found in the environmental impacts of PM2.5 emissions from cropland fires, with strong effects during summer in NC and during spring and autumn in NEC. This study provides empirical support for understanding the environmental impacts of cropland fires in key regions of China and offers critical insights to inform and refine related pollution control policies. Ageing is a dynamic biological process involving interconnected physiological, psychological, and social changes, making the promotion of healthy ageing a global public health priority. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines healthy ageing as the process of developing and maintaining functional ability that enables well-being in older age. The WHO’s Decade of Healthy Aging (2021–2030) outlines four key action areas: changing attitudes toward ageing, creating age-friendly environments, delivering integrated and person-centred care, and ensuring access to long-term care. This Perspective examines yoga, a holistic mind–body practice integrating physical postures, breath regulation, and mindfulness, as a potentially safe, adaptable, and scalable intervention for older adults. Evidence suggests that yoga may improve flexibility, balance, mobility, and cardiovascular function, reduce pain, and support the management of chronic conditions commonly associated with ageing. Psychological and cognitive research further indicates reductions in stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, alongside potential benefits for attention, memory, and executive function. Improvements in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) have been reported across physical, psychological, and social domains, with benefits sustained through regular practice. Adaptations such as chair-based practices, restorative postures, and the use of props enhance accessibility and safety, allowing participation across diverse functional levels. Mindfulness and breath-focused components of yoga may additionally support emotional regulation, resilience, and psychological well-being, particularly among older adults experiencing stress or limited mobility. Yoga interventions are generally well tolerated, demonstrate high adherence, and can be delivered through in-person and digital formats, addressing common access barriers. Despite this growing evidence base, yoga remains underintegrated within health policy and care systems in the US, UK, and India. Strengthening its role may require coordinated efforts across research, policy, and implementation to support healthy ageing outcomes. Full article

Following World Health Organization (WHO) validation of lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination as a public health problem, countries are required to implement post-validation surveillance (PVS) to detect potential resurgence and ensure sustained elimination. WHO’s guidelines released in 2025 recommend implementation of at least two of four PVS strategies—targeted surveys, integration into standardised surveys, health facility-based screening, and molecular xenomonitoring (MX) of mosquitoes. This review synthesised global evidence on PVS activities from 2007 to 2025 in the 23 countries and territories validated as having eliminated LF. Studies were identified through PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and the WHO Institutional Repository for Information Sharing (IRIS). Data on publication information, surveillance strategies, priority populations, and operational challenges and enablers were extracted. Narrative synthesis using deductive content analysis was applied. Thirty documents from 17 countries were included. Targeted surveillance and integration of PVS with other health programmes were the most common approaches noted (reported in ten and nine countries, respectively), followed by MX (seven countries) and health facility-based screening (four countries). Surveillance often focused on migrants and previous hotspots, with operational challenges linked to limited funding, workforce, and supply chains. Documents indicated that Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, and South Korea developed sustained PVS through national policies and domestic funding. Findings highlight the need for clear, contextualised guidance to operationalise sustainable PVS in different settings. Full article

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping health sciences education worldwide, yet regional data from Latin America remain scarce. Understanding students’ AI literacy and perceptions is essential for developing informed curricular strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 270 students from four Costa Rican universities across five health sciences programs. Descriptive and inferential analyses (ANOVA, Chi-square) examined AI knowledge, usage frequency, and perceptions of ethical integration in academic contexts. Results: Over 80% of respondents reported moderate or higher AI knowledge and frequent use of tools such as ChatGPT, mostly for academic support tasks. However, more than 90% had not received formal institutional training, and ethical awareness—particularly regarding misinformation and bias—was limited. Conclusions: Students demonstrate active engagement with AI despite minimal curricular exposure. These findings emphasize the need for structured AI training, faculty development, and equitable access policies aligned with global digital ethics frameworks to ensure responsible adoption within Costa Rican health sciences education. Smallholder farmers in semi-arid regions worldwide face persistent water scarcity, declining soil fertility, and increasing climate variability, which constrain food production. This study investigated soil and water management practices and their effects on soil health, crop productivity, and adoption among smallholder vegetable farmers in a semi-arid area in Kenya. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining survey data from 397 farmers with a randomized field experiment. Results showed that hand watering (88.7%) and manure application (95.5%) were prevalent, while only 5.7% of farmers used drip irrigation. Compost and mulch treatments significantly improved soil organic carbon (p = 0.03), available water capacity (p = 0.01), and gravimetric moisture content (p = 0.02), with soil moisture conservation practices strongly correlated with higher yields in leafy green vegetables (R = 0.62). Despite these benefits, adoption was hindered by high water costs (42.6%) and unreliable sources (25.7%). Encouragingly, 96.2% of respondents expressed willingness to pay for improved water systems if affordable and dependable. The findings stress the need for integrated water–soil strategies supported by inclusive policy, infrastructure investment, and gender-responsive training to enhance resilience and productivity in smallholder farming under water-scarce conditions across sub-Saharan Africa and other regions globally, contributing to global sustainability targets such as SDG 6, 12 and 15. Child marriage remains a major threat to adolescent girls’ health, development, and rights worldwide. Despite decades of progress, recent policy backsliding and sociopolitical instability have created new risks, with examples from Iraq, Afghanistan, and The Gambia illustrating how legal and political shifts are reshaping vulnerabilities for girls. This paper presents an integrated framework linking developmental science with legal and policy advocacy, emphasizing how evolving capacities and psychosocial maturity should inform marriage laws and protection mechanisms. It reframes advocacy and rights-based action as essential components of adolescent health systems, drawing on recent policy analyses and country examples to identify actionable, multisectoral strategies. The paper highlights an urgent need for collective, evidence-informed advocacy to protect adolescent girls and advance gender equality, an issue of growing importance amid renewed global attention to legal reforms on child marriage. Dental caries remains a major global public health problem characterized by pronounced social inequalities. This study aimed to identify, critically appraise, and synthesize the most recent evidence on the relationship between socioeconomic indicators and dental caries among adults aged 19–60 years, providing an updated systematic review that builds upon our previous reviews from 2012 and 2018. Reported following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we conducted a systematic search of eight electronic databases for observational studies published between March 2017 and April 2024 (PROSPERO: CRD42017074434). Two independent reviewers performed study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Due to substantial methodological heterogeneity across the 22 included studies, a narrative synthesis was undertaken. The findings demonstrated a strong inverse association between socioeconomic position and caries experience. Lower income, lower educational attainment, and unemployment or employment in manual/unskilled occupations were associated with a higher overall caries experience. Advanced analytical approaches in recent studies, including life-course, reinforced that education and income are key contributors of these oral health inequalities, with persistent social disadvantage conferring the greatest risk. In conclusion, dental caries in adults aged 19–60 years is a social condition reflecting the cumulative effects of socioeconomic inequality across the life course. Addressing adult dental caries requires integrated approaches that combine clinical prevention with social and public policies aimed at reducing structural inequalities. Full article
