Background/Objectives: Consuming comfort food is a common experience in daily life, but the underlying motives for engaging in comfort eating remain unclear. This study examined people’s expectations regarding their comfort food and investigated whether these expectations are associated with their frequency of comfort eating. As an exploratory aim, we also examined whether there are gender differences in preference for different categories of comfort food (i.e., sweet or savory) and the frequency of engaging in comfort eating. Methods: Through an online survey, participants (n = 214) reported their primary comfort food, the frequency of comfort eating in the short term (i.e., the past two weeks), and the general trend over the long term. They also rated statements related to their primary comfort food based on five expectation subscales (i.e., Manage Negative Affect; Pleasurable and Rewarding; Enhances Cognitive Competence; Alleviates Boredom; Positive Feelings). Results: Although Pleasurable and Rewarding and Positive Feelings received the strongest level of endorsement, their associations with the frequency-related variables were weak in both correlational and regression analyses. In contrast, Manage Negative Affect, Alleviates Boredom, and Enhances Cognitive Competence were positively associated with all frequency-related variables, with Alleviates Boredom showing the most consistent pattern. There were no significant gender differences in preferences for sweet or savory comfort food, and no significant gender differences in the frequency of eating comfort food. Conclusions: These findings suggest people believe they can gain a range of expected benefits from consuming comfort foods and perceive themselves as consuming comfort food primarily for rewarding themselves or gaining positive feelings. However, it is the expectations of managing negative affect, alleviating boredom, and enhancing cognitive competence that motivate them to engage in comfort eating. Full article

Physical exercise may affect drug use by balancing neurohormonal system mechanisms. Cortisol and β-endorphin, associated with stress, mood, and pleasure feelings, can be affected by exercise and act as regulators of withdrawal symptoms associated with drug use during short-term abstinence. The present study investigated the effect of a supervised, two-month moderate-intensity aerobic exercise program on salivary cortisol and β-endorphin levels in patients with an opioid use disorder (OUD) and on a substitution treatment during a short-term, 24–36 h withdrawal phase from methadone/buprenorphine medication. Ninety opioid users (41 females) in methadone and buprenorphine substitution treatment were randomly divided into four groups: (a) buprenorphine exercise (BEX) (n = 26; age (mean ± SD): 41.9 ± 6.1 yrs), (b) buprenorphine control (BCON) (n = 25; age: 41.9 ± 5.6 yrs), (c) methadone exercise (MEX) (n = 20; age: 46.7 ± 6.6 yrs), and (d) methadone control (MCON) (n = 19; age: 46.1 ± 7.5 yrs). The exercise intervention groups (BEX and MEX) followed a training program on a treadmill for 20 min at 70% HRmax, 3 days/week for 8 weeks. The responses of cortisol and β-endorphin were measured before (t0) and immediately after an exercise session (t20) on different days (i.e., the 1st, 12th, and 24th session) corresponding to the beginning, middle, and end of the training program. A significant increase in β-endorphin levels was observed after the completion of the training intervention (24th exercise session) in both exercise groups (BEX before: 63.8 ± 33; BEX after: 185.6 ± 182.8 pg/mL; MEX before: 115 ± 211; MEX after: 262.3 ± 505.7 pg/mL), whereas β-endorphin was decreased in the control groups (BCON before: 34.7 ± 20.1; BCON after: 24.2 ± 8.8 pg/mL; MCON before: 129.7 ± 185.7; MCON after: 84.9 ± 104.3 pg/mL) (p < 0.05). Inversely, cortisol decreased in both exercise groups post-intervention (BEX before: 9.5 ± 5.9; BEX after: 2.8 ± 1.5 ng/mL; MEX before: 9.3 ± 6.6; MEX after: 3.1 ± 1.5 ng/mL) and increased in control groups (BCON before: 6.3 ± 2.5; BCON after: 10.1 ± 5.4 ng/mL; MCON before: 7.5 ± 3.2; MCON after: 12.5 ± 4.3 ng/mL) (p < 0.05). Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise can beneficially influence β-endorphin and cortisol levels in individuals undergoing treatment for OUD. By increasing endogenous opioid levels and reducing stress hormones, exercise emerges as a promising adjunctive strategy for alleviating withdrawal symptoms, enhancing emotional regulation, and potentially reducing the risk of relapse. The inverse relationship between β-endorphin and cortisol highlights the role of physical activity as a long-term modulator of neuroendocrine function in the context of substance use recovery. Future research should prioritize longitudinal studies extending beyond two months and involving larger, more diverse populations. Additionally, investigating the integration of exercise with non-pharmacological interventions—and its effects on relapse rates, mental health outcomes, and overall quality of life—would provide further insight into its therapeutic value in addiction recovery. Previous research and classroom practices have focused on dispelling shame, assuming that it negatively impacts self-efficacy and performance, and overlook the potential for shame to facilitate learning. To investigate this gap, we designed an intervention with 132 tertiary education students (45.46% male, 64.4% European ethnicity) spanning diverse undergraduate majors to show how and why designing for experiences of shame and appropriately regulating them can differentially impact learning. Shame was induced through autobiographical recall, imagination, and failure-driven problem-solving before randomly assigning students to three conditions: two with explicit tips for either decreasing shame or maintaining shame (experimental groups) and one with no-regulation tips (control). Students worked on an introductory data science problem deliberately designed to lead to failure before receiving canonical instruction. Manipulation checks triangulating self-reported and facial expression analysis data suggested that shame was successfully regulated in the intended direction, depending on the condition. Our results, drawing on mixed-methods analyses, further suggested that relative to students decreasing shame, those who maintained shame during initial problem-solving had (i) similar post-test performance on a non-isomorphic question and improved performance on the transfer question, evidenced by accuracy in solving applied data science and inference tasks; (ii) complete reasoning across all post-test questions, as evidenced by elaborations justifying the usage of graphical and numerical representations across those tasks; and (iii) use of superior emotion regulation strategies focused on deploying attention to the problem and reappraising its inherently challenging nature with an approach orientation, as evidenced by a higher frequency of such codes derived from self-reported qualitative data during the intervention. Decreasing shame was as effective as not engaging in explicit regulation. Our results suggest that teaching efforts should be channeled to facilitate experiencing emotions that are conducive to goals, whether they feel pleasurable or not, which may inevitably involve emoting both positive and negative (e.g., shame) in moderation. However, it is paramount that emotional experiences are not merely seen by educators as tools for improved content learning but as an essential part of holistic student development. We advocate for the deliberate design of learning experiences that support, rather than overshadow, students’ emotional growth. Full article

Warhammer 40,000 (40k) is the world’s most popular miniature wargame. The game is played with miniatures (small-scale figures made of hard plastic or other materials), which have usually been painted by each individual player. These player–painters typically spend hours in deep concentration painting the models. Drawing on interviews and journal entries from a six-month participant study of 14 painters, this paper explores whether miniature painters achieve a flow state, whether this creates a greater feeling of mindfulness, and how painting impacts their overall mental health. Results from this study indicate that miniature painting is meditative, meaningful, and positive for the participants’ mental health. Using the definition of flow outlined in Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s book Optimal Experience: Psychological Studies of Flow in Consciousness (1988), flow is a state of pleasure had when an individual concentrates on a specific task. Csikszentmihalyi, from his research on flow, notes that this state of mind involves both immersion and a sense of transcendence, where the individual temporarily loses a sense of self. This sense of loss of self was explored with an increased attention to the feeling of the body, and situated cognition has been further explored to understand how this connects to painting. While flow is regularly applied to videogame studies, less work has been carried out on this flow state during activities like miniature painting. Full article

Rapidly changing digital technologies are reconfiguring the way human society lives, indicating that more and more middle-aged and older adults will lead a digital life in the future. Whether digital technology for today can effectively improve the quality of digital life of this cohort is the focus of this study. This study proposed a “cognitive–emotional–behavioral” model and situated the use of the Extreme Edition App as a cross-sectional research object. The study also explored the relationship between middle-aged and older adults’ perceptions of the benefits of cash subsidies, the pleasure and worry generated by the use of the app, and their continued use of the app. It has become a fact that human beings are walking side by side with digital technology; digital technology still moves forward and upward. Thus, it is forward-looking to pay attention to the digital life adaptation of the current middle-aged and older groups. A total of 1200 valid questionnaires were obtained, and regression analysis showed that (1) the more comprehensive and in-depth the cohort’s knowledge of the benefits of cash subsidies is, and the more sustainable their continuous use of the Extreme Edition App is, the more pleasure they experience, and the less worry they feel during its use. (2) The more pleasure middle-aged and older adults feel while using the Extreme Edition App, the more likely they are to continue using it. Conversely, the more worry they feel, the less likely they are to maintain its use. (3) Emotions generated during the use of the Extreme Edition App mediate the relationship between this cohort’s perceptions of cash subsidy benefits and their continued-use behavior. Full article

As the cultural importance of universities continues to grow, university museums have become key platforms for promoting university heritage and values. However, enhancing the visitor experience in these museums remains challenging. This study examines the effectiveness of smellscape in enhancing the visitor experience in university history museums, with a focus on how various scents impact visitors’ emotions. Using the Fuzhou University History Museum as a case study, the museum was divided into three distinct zones: the Historical Evolution Zone (HEZ), the Contemporary Development Zone (CDZ), and the Thematic Exhibition Zone (TEZ). Specific scents were selected for each area to evaluate their emotional impact, and data were gathered using electroencephalography (EEG) indicators, emotional questionnaires, and scent pleasure scales. The results indicated that calming scents like sandalwood and agarwood, used in the HEZ, convey a sense of historical depth but may also evoke negative emotions, whereas sage enhances positive feelings. In the CDZ, rosemary and mint significantly improve emotional states, while lemongrass exhibits weaker pleasantness and appears less suited for this area. In the TEZ, scents such as patchouli and orange blossom align well with future-oriented themes, demonstrating high levels of pleasantness and emotional value. Smellwalk interviews further validated the experimental results, revealing notable differences in the emotional impact of smellscape across different exhibit zones. A thoughtful selection of scents can enhance the cultural expression of spaces and effectively regulate visitors’ emotional experiences, strengthening the cultural resonance of museum environments. Future designers may consider incorporating olfactory elements into landscape design. Full article

Individuals frequently encounter alluring food temptations that can disrupt their efforts to follow a healthy diet. These temptations may trigger pleasurable thoughts and sensations, potentially leading to unhealthy eating habits and obesity, which misalign with the goals of sustainable food systems to promote overall well-being. However, there is limited knowledge regarding how individual differences such as gender and motivation for healthy eating might impact individuals’ responses to unhealthy food temptations. In an experimental investigation, 245 participants were exposed to a tasty but low-nutrient food product (potato crisps). The results provide several new insights: (a) when individuals’ motivation for healthy eating is low, pleasurable experiences have a positive impact on perceived dietary quality; (b) pleasurable feelings also directly reduce willingness to consume potato crisps; (c) gender influences the relationship between pleasure-feeling and willingness to eat, with a negative relationship for women and a non-significant relationship for men; and (d) among women, there is a positive relationship between arousal and willingness to eat, while this relationship is non-significant for men. This study adds to the body of knowledge already available on food temptations, nutrition, and sustainable eating. Full article

Mechanical keyboards are one of the most used keyboards in daily work, and as the core component of a mechanical keyboard, keyswitches’ characteristics have been widely researched during the last several decades. Meanwhile, keyboards’ backlight design has become an emerging market trend, even though its actual influence on user experience remains unknown. Our study investigated the influence of keyboard switch characteristics and backlight states on typing performance and subjective typing experience. Thirty-three participants were involved in an English-language typing task on keyboards with four typical switches (red, black, brown, and blue types). Software was used to automatically record typing speed and accuracy, and a 7-point Likert subjective scale was used to evaluate typing experience. Results showed that tactile characteristics performed better than linear switches in typing speed, accuracy, and subjective refresh feeling in pair comparison of blue and red switches, and turning on the backlight effect improved typing speed, refreshing feeling, and pleasure. Among six physical characteristics of switches measured in the experiment, pre travel, reset travel, make force, and bottom force contributed more to better typing performance and subjective experience. Our findings provide keyboard manufacturers and researchers with a reference to optimize users’ typing experience. Full article

The acceleration of urbanization has resulted in a heightened awareness of the impacts of urban environments on residents’ emotional states. This present study focuses on the Lixia District of Jinan City. By using urban street view big data and deep learning methods, we undertook a detailed analysis of the impacts of urban color features on residents’ emotional perceptions. In particular, a substantial corpus of street scene image data was extracted and processed. This was performed using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) and semantic segmentation technology (PSPNet), which enabled the simulation and prediction of the subjective perception of the urban environment by humans. Furthermore, the color complexity and coordination in the street scene were quantified and combined with residents’ emotional feedback to carry out a multi-dimensional analysis. The findings revealed that color complexity and coordination were significant elements influencing residents’ emotional perceptions. A high color complexity is visually appealing, but can lead to fatigue, discomfort, and boredom; a moderate complexity stimulates vitality and pleasure; high levels of regional harmony and aesthetics can increase perceptions of beauty and security; and low levels of coordination can increase feelings of depression. The environmental characteristics of different areas and differences in the daily activities of residents resulted in regional differences regarding the impacts of color features on emotional perception. This study corroborates the assertion that environmental color coordination has the capacity to enhance residents’ emotions, thereby providing an important reference point for urban planning. Planning should be based on the functional characteristics of the region, and color complexity and coordination should be reasonably regulated to optimize the emotional experiences of residents. Differentiated color management enhances urban aesthetics, livability, and residents’ happiness and promotes sustainable development. In the future, the influences of color and environmental factors on emotions can be explored in depth, with a view to assist in the formulation of fine urban design. Full article

Significant efforts are currently being made to improve the quality of life of the older adult population. These efforts focus on aspects such as health, social interaction, and mental health. One of the approaches that has shown positive results in several studies is the application of game-based systems. These systems are not only used for entertainment, but also as tools for learning and promoting positive feelings. They are a means to overcome loneliness and isolation, as well as to improve health and provide support in daily life. However, it is important to note that, while these experiences are gradually being introduced to the older adult population, they are often designed with a younger audience in mind who are assumed to be more technologically proficient. This supposition can make older adults initially feel intimidated when interacting with this type of technology, which limits their ability to fully utilize and enjoy these technological solutions. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to apply a game experience and fun evaluation process oriented toward the older adult population based on the playability theory of human–computer interaction in virtual reality game experiences. This is expected to offer highly rewarding and pleasurable experiences, which will improve engagement with the older population and promote active and healthy aging. Full article

This study aimed to explore the experience of painting appreciation through desktop virtual reality (VR) and a heads-up display (HTC Vive) and compare it with those of a physical painting and album. The study included 52 university students who viewed paintings in all four environments and answered a subjective feelings questionnaire. The results show that the physical paintings generated more positive emotions, such as pleasure, relaxation, and calmness, than virtual paintings. Additionally, the physical paintings were perceived and evaluated as more original, attractive, and valuable. Moreover, among the virtual paintings, the landscape paintings were more popular than abstract ones, whereas among the physical paintings, the abstract paintings were preferred. The head-mounted display made the participants feel uncertain about moving in the physical environment, and the transmission line connecting it to the computer limited their movements. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the quality and ease of interactions in VR environments to make virtual paintings appear as impressive as physical ones. Full article

In the context of the Catholic Reformation serious concerns were expressed about the affective potency of naturalistic depictions of beautiful, sensuous figures in religious art. In theological discourse similar anxieties had long been articulated about potential contiguities between elevating, licit desire for an extraordinarily beautiful divinity and base, illicit feeling. In the later fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, in the decades preceding the Council of Trent, a handful of writers, thinkers and artists asserted a positive connection between spirituality and sexuality. Leonardo da Vinci, and a group of painters working under his aegis in Lombardy, were keenly aware of painting’s capacity to evoke feeling in a viewer. Pictures they produced for domestic devotion featured knowingly sensuous and unusually epicene beauties. This article suggests that this iconography daringly advocated the value of pleasurable sensation to religiosity. Its popularity allows us to envisage beholders who were neither mired in sin, nor seeking to divorce themselves from the physical realm, but engaging afresh with age-old dialectics of body and soul, sexuality and spirituality. Perceived Soundscape Experiences and Human Emotions in Urban Green Spaces: Application of Russell’s Circumplex Model of Affect

Humans perceive their surrounding environments largely through their experiences of sight and hearing. The perceived environmental information then brings on neurophysiological changes, so as to influence human emotions. These mutually influenced relations have been widely utilized by many environmental psychologists to explore potential avenues for improving human emotions through design interventions. However, to date, no efficient and accurate way has been established to describe these relationships. Inspired by Russell’s model of emotion, this study aims to develop an efficient process that uses coordinate mapping and can intuitively describe the impact of visual-aural perceptive attributes on human emotions. Taking typical urban green spaces (UGSs) in Chengdu as examples, this study first measured the visual and aural characteristics of study sites perceived by people and their emotional responses. The study then established the use of emotional status on a coordinate axis, allowing each visual-aural attribute corresponding to each emotional response to be projected onto the coordinates. Results suggested that the dataset composed of 279 evaluations could be classified into three distinct types of visual-aural settings and the distribution of emotions is evidently varied in different settings. It was found that aesthetic and order of visual aspects as well as eventful and harmonious soundscape in environments are more likely to make people feel pleasure, while openness and layering of the visual landscape can easily arouse people’s positive status. The research outcome broadens the practical path of soundscape research, centring on human emotions, experiences and feelings, such as the pleasantness and arousal raised in Russell’s theory of emotion. The study also makes an empirical contribution to the design of UGSs based on multi-sensory perception and serves the purpose of improving people’s environmental experiences. Full article

Predictors of Eating Less Meat and More Plant-Based Food in the Polish Sample

The study aimed to identify predictors of the intention to eat less meat and more plant-based foods, including attitudes towards eating meat, habitual meat eating, subjective norms, and self-identity. A cross-sectional study using CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) was conducted in a group of 1003 Polish adults in 2023. To measure the predictor variables, the following tools were used: Beliefs and Eating Habits Questionnaire (KomPAN), Meat Attachment Questionnaire (MAQ), and scales to measure subjective norms and self-identity. Logistic regression analysis was used to verify associations between independent variables, and the intentions to eat more plant-based food and less meat next year were treated as dependent variables. More respondents were willing to increase their consumption of plant-based foods rather than reduce their meat consumption. The intention to consume less meat and more plant foods was more prevalent among women, older people (only intention to reduce meat consumption), and better-educated people (only intention to increase plant food consumption). Habitual frequency of eating plant foods, negative feelings about meat, and environmentally oriented identities had a stimulating effect on the intention to eat more plant foods and less meat, while experiencing pleasure in eating meat had a limiting effect on the intention to eat more plant foods and less meat. In addition, the habitual frequency of meat consumption and subjective norms reduced the likelihood of eating less meat, while no predictive effect was observed for the intention to eat more plant foods. In conclusion, educational and promotional activities to raise awareness of the link between food consumption and the environment can have a strong impact on eating less meat and more plant-based food, even among those strongly accustomed to meat consumption. The present study proves the construct validity of the German versions of the Feeling Scale (FS) and the Felt Arousal Scale (FAS) for measuring the affective responses (affective valence and arousal) for a moderate-intensity jogging (JG) exercise. In previous studies, both scales were validated for a high-intensity bicycle ergometer exercise and for relaxation techniques. In the present study, 194 participants performed the JG exercise for 45 min and completed the FS and the FAS, as well as the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM), for a self–other comparison in a pre-test-intervention-post-test design. The results of the correlation analyses replicated the previous findings for the high-intensity bicycle ergometer exercise and the relaxation techniques, revealing significant positive correlations for the valence dimension between the FS and the SAM-Pleasure subscale (r = 0.50) and for the arousal dimension between the FAS and the SAM-Arousal subscale (r = 0.16). These findings suggest that the German versions of the FS and the FAS are also suitable for exercises of moderate intensity. Full article
