Transformers are key elements in electrical systems. Although they are robust machines, different faults can appear due to their inherent operating conditions, e.g., the presence of different electrical and mechanical stresses. Among the different elements that compound a transformer, the winding is one of the most vulnerable parts, where the damage of turn-to-turn short circuits is one of the most studied faults since low-level damage (i.e., a low number of short-circuited turns—SCTs) can lead to the overall fault of the transformer; therefore, early fault detection has become a fundamental task. In this regard, this paper presents a machine learning-based method to diagnose SCTs in the transformer windings by using their vibrational response. In general, the vibration signals are firstly decomposed by means of the variational mode decomposition method, where a comparison with the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method and the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method is also carried out. Then, entropy, energy, and kurtosis indices are obtained from each decomposition as fault indicators, where both the combination of features and the dimensionality reduction by using the principal component analysis (PCA) method are analyzed for the global effectiveness improvement and the computational burden reduction. Finally, a pattern recognition algorithm based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) is used for automatic fault detection. The obtained results show 100% effectiveness in detecting seven fault conditions, i.e., 0 (healthy), 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 SCTs. Full article

The intermittent and random nature of wind brings great challenges to the accurate prediction of wind power; a single model is insufficient to meet the requirements of ultra-short-term wind power prediction. Although ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) can be used to extract the time series features of the original wind power data, the number of its modes will increase with the complexity of the original data. Too many modes are unnecessary, making the prediction model constructed based on the sub-models too complex. An entropy ensemble empirical mode decomposition (eEEMD) method based on information entropy is proposed in this work. Fewer components with significant feature differences are obtained using information entropy to reconstruct sub-sequences. The long short-term memory (LSTM) model is suitable for prediction after the decomposition of time series. All the modes are trained with the same deep learning framework LSTM. In view of the different features of each mode, models should be trained differentially for each mode; a rule is designed to determine the training error of each mode according to its average value. In this way, the model prediction accuracy and efficiency can make better tradeoffs. The predictions of different modes are reconstructed to obtain the final prediction results. The test results from a wind power unit show that the proposed eEEMD-LSTM has higher prediction accuracy compared with single LSTM and EEMD-LSTM, and the results based on Bayesian ridge regression (BR) and support vector regression (SVR) are the same; eEEMD-LSTM exhibits better performance. This study investigated the application of a modified percussion entropy index (PEIPPI) in assessing the complexity of baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) for diabetic peripheral neuropathy prognosis. The index was acquired by comparing the obedience of the fluctuation tendency in the change between the amplitudes of continuous digital volume pulse (DVP) and variations in the peak-to-peak interval (PPI) from a decomposed intrinsic mode function (i.e., IMF6) through ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD). In total, 100 middle-aged subjects were split into 3 groups: healthy subjects (group 1, 48–89 years, n = 34), subjects with type 2 diabetes without peripheral neuropathy within 5 years (group 2, 42–86 years, n = 42, HbA1c ≥ 6.5%), and type 2 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy within 5 years (group 3, 37–75 years, n = 24). The results were also found to be very successful at discriminating between PEIPPI values among the three groups (p < 0.017), and indicated significant associations with the anthropometric (i.e., body weight and waist circumference) and serum biochemical (i.e., triglycerides, glycated hemoglobin, and fasting blood glucose) parameters in all subjects (p < 0.05). The present study, which utilized the DVP signals of aged, overweight subjects and diabetic patients, successfully determined the PPI intervals from IMF6 through EEMD. The PEIPPI can provide a prognosis of peripheral neuropathy from diabetic patients within 5 years after photoplethysmography (PPG) measurement. Full article
