With rising global temperatures and increasing sustainability demands, the need for advanced pavement solutions has never been greater. This study breaks new ground by integrating phase change materials (PCMs), including paraffin-based wax (Rubitherm RT55), hydrated salt (Climator Salt S10), and fatty acid (lauric acid), as binder modifiers within warm mix asphalt (WMA) mixtures. Moving beyond the traditional focus on binder-only modifications, this research utilizes recycled cigarette filters (CFs) as a dual-purpose fiber additive, directly reinforcing the asphalt mixture while simultaneously transforming a major urban waste stream into valuable infrastructure. The performance of the developed WMA mixture has been evaluated in terms of stiffness behavior using an Indirect Tensile Strength Modulus (ITSM) test, permanent deformation using a static creep strain test, and rutting resistance using the Hamburg wheel-track test. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the incorporation of PCMs and recycled CFs into WMA mixtures led to remarkable improvements in stiffness, deformation resistance, and rutting performance. Modified mixes consistently outperformed the control, achieving up to 15% higher stiffness after 7 days of curing, 36% lower creep strain after 4000 s, and 64% reduction in rut depth at 20,000 passes. Cost–benefit analysis and service life prediction show that, despite costing USD 0.71 more per square meter with 5 cm thickness, the modified WMA mixture delivers much greater durability and rutting resistance, extending service life to 19–29 years compared to 10–15 years for the control. This highlights the value of these modifications for durable, sustainable pavements. Full article

The impact mechanism of long-term creep in gas-containing coal on coal and gas outbursts has not been fully elucidated and remains insufficiently understood for the purpose of disaster engineering control. This investigation conducted triaxial creep experiments on raw coal specimens under controlled confining pressures, axial stresses, and gas pressures. Through systematic analysis of coal’s physical responses across different loading conditions, we developed and validated a novel creep damage constitutive model for gas-saturated coal through laboratory data calibration. The key findings reveal three characteristic creep regimes: (1) a decelerating phase dominates under low stress conditions, (2) progressive transitions to combined decelerating–steady-state creep with increasing stress, and (3) triphasic decelerating–steady–accelerating behavior at critical stress levels. Comparative analysis shows that gas-free specimens exhibit lower cumulative strain than the 0.5 MPa gas-saturated counterparts, with gas presence accelerating creep progression and reducing the time to failure. Measured creep rates demonstrate stress-dependent behavior: primary creep progresses at 0.002–0.011%/min, decaying exponentially to secondary creep rates below 0.001%/min. Steady-state creep rates follow a power law relationship when subject to deviatoric stress (R2 = 0.96). Through the integration of Burgers viscoelastic model with the effective stress principle for porous media, we propose an enhanced constitutive model, incorporating gas adsorption-induced dilatational stresses. This advancement provides a theoretical foundation for predicting time-dependent deformation in deep coal reservoirs and informs monitoring strategies concerning gas-bearing strata stability. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding and engineering monitoring of creep behavior in deep coal rocks. Full article

Nickel-based superalloys are widely utilized in critical hot-end components, such as aeroengine turbine blades, owing to their exceptional high-temperature strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance. During service, these components are frequently subjected to complex localized loading, leading to non-uniform plastic deformation and microstructure evolution within the material. Combining nanoindentation experiments with the crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM), this study systematically investigates the effects of loading rate and crystal orientation on the elastoplastic deformation of DD6 alloy under spherical indenter loading. The results indicate that the maximum indentation depth increases and hardness decreases with prolonged loading time, exhibiting a significant strain rate strengthening effect. The CPFEM model incorporating dislocation density effectively simulates the nonlinear characteristics of the nanoindentation process and elucidates the evolution of dislocation density and slip system strength with indentation depth. At low loading rates, both dislocation density and slip system strength increase with loading time. Significant differences in mechanical behavior are observed across different crystal orientations, which correspond to the extent of lattice rotation during texture evolution. For the [111] orientation, crystal rotation is concentrated and highly regular, while the [001] orientation shows uniform texture evolution. This demonstrates that anisotropy governs the deformation mechanism through differential slip system activation and texture evolution. Full article

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes. Statistical analysis identifies an optimal LS dosage of 20–30% (average 24%) for maximizing compressive strength and long-term durability, with 40% as a practical upper limit for tensile and flexural performance. Fresh-state tests show that workability losses at high LS content can be mitigated via superplasticizers. Drying shrinkage and creep strains decrease in a dose-dependent manner with up to 30% LS. High-volume (40%) LS blends achieve up to an 18% gain in 180-day compressive strength and >30% reduction in permeability metrics. Under elevated temperatures, 20% LS mixes retain up to 50% more residual strength than controls. In advanced systems—autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), one-part geopolymers, and recycled aggregate composites—LS further enhances both microstructural densification and durability. In particular, LS emerges as a versatile SCM that optimizes mechanical and durability performance, supports material circularity, and reduces the carbon footprint. Full article

Subsurface mass concrete infrastructure—including immersed tunnels, dams, and nuclear waste containment systems—frequently faces calcium-leaching risks from prolonged groundwater exposure. An anisotropic stress-leaching damage model incorporating microcrack propagation is developed for underground concrete’s chemo–mechanical coupling. This model investigates stress-induced anisotropy in concrete through the evolution of oriented microcrack networks. The model incorporates nonlinear anisotropic plastic strain from coupled chemical–mechanical damage. Unlike conventional concrete rheology, this model characterizes chemical creep through stress-chemical coupled damage mechanics. The numerical model is incorporated within COMSOL Multiphysics to perform coupled multiphysics simulations. A close match is observed between the numerical predictions and experimental findings. Under high stress loads, calcium leaching and mechanical stress exhibit significant coupling effects. Regarding concrete durability, chemical degradation has a more pronounced effect on concrete’s stiffness and strength reduction compared with stress-generated microcracking. Full article

To address the issues of hydrogen embrittlement, creep, and fatigue that commonly occur in the welds of hydrogen production reactor operating under hydrogen exposure, high temperature and high pressure, this study proposes adding Si and Mo as reinforcing elements to the welding materials to enhance weld performance. Given the varying performance requirements of different weld layers in the stacked weld, a gradient performance optimization method for the stacked weld of hydrogen production reactors based on the response surface methodology (RSM)–genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. Using tensile strength, the hydrogen embrittlement sensitivity index, fatigue strain strength, creep rate and weld performance evaluation indices, a high-precision regression model for Si and Mo contents and weld performance indices was established through RSM and analysis of variance (ANOVA). A multi-objective optimization mathematical model for gradient improvement of the stacked weld was also established. This model was solved using a GA to obtain the optimal element content combination added to the welding wire and the optimal weld thickness for each weld layer. Finally, submerged arc welding experiments of the stacked weld were conducted according to the optimization results. The results show that the tensile strength of the base layer, filling layer and cover layer of the stacked weld increased by 5.60%, 6.16% and 4.53%, respectively. Hydrogen embrittlement resistance increased by 70.56%, 52.40% and 45.16%, respectively. The fatigue and creep resistance were also improved. The experimental results validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed optimization method. Full article

This work aims to reveal the full-field strain evolution characteristics and failure mechanisms of anisotropic coal samples under creep loading. A series of compression tests combined with digital image correlation (DIC) monitoring were employed to characterize the strain evolution process of coal specimens with bedding angles of 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°. Testing results show that the peak strength, peak strain, and the creep loading stage of coal are significantly influenced by the bedding angle. The peak strength initially decreases and then increases as the bedding angle increases. In addition, the creep failure of coal manifests as a process of instantaneous deformation, decelerating creep, steady-state creep, accelerating creep, and failure. Under graded creep loading conditions, coal specimens exhibit distinct creep characteristics at high stress levels. Moreover, the bedding angle significantly influences the strain field evolution of the coal samples. Finally, for coal specimens with bedding angles of 0° and 90°, the final macroscopic fracture pattern upon failure is characterized by longitudinal tensile splitting. In contrast, coal samples with bedding angles of 30° and 60° tend to exhibit failure along the bedding interfaces, forming tensile-shear fractures. The results of this study will provide theoretical guidance for the prevention, early warning, and safety management of coal mine disasters. Full article

The role of pre-hoop expansion deformation on high-temperature mechanical properties of zirconium at 400 °C was investigated. The results showed that with the increase in the pre-strain, the yield strength and ultimate strength increased while the elongation decreased, all in a linear way. The creep life had a significant decrease as the creep stress exceeded 276 MPa. The fatigue–creep results indicated that as the stress ratio was less than 0.7, the deformation process was dominated by fatigue (the fatigue–creep life first increased and then decreased), while as the stress ratio was higher than 0.7, the deformation process was dominated by creep (the fatigue–creep life decreased monotonically). The dwell time had a negative effect on the fatigue–creep life. The stress field simulation results indicated that there existed a compressive stress zone, a stress transition zone, and a tensile stress zone around the pre-hoop expansion deformation zone. The compressive stress was beneficial while the tensile stress was harmful for the high-temperature mechanical properties of the zirconium plate. Full article

As the world’s deepest hydraulic tunnels, the Jinping ultra-deep tunnels provide world-class conditions for research on deep rock mechanics under extreme conditions. This study analyzed the time-dependent behavior of different tunneling sections in the Jinping tunnels using the Nishihara creep model implemented in Abaqus. Validated numerical simulations of representative cross-sections at 1400 m and 2400 m depths in the diversion tunnel reveal that long-term creep deformations (over a 20-year period) substantially exceed instantaneous excavation-induced displacements. The stress concentrations and strain magnitudes exhibit significant depth dependence. The maximum principal stress at a 2400 m depth reaches 1.71 times that at 1400 m, while the vertical strain increases 1.46-fold. Based on this, the long-term mechanical behavior of the surrounding rock during the expansion of the Jinping auxiliary tunnel was further calculated and predicted. It was found that the stress concentration at the top and bottom of the left sidewall increases from 135 MPa to 203 MPa after expansion, identifying these as critical areas requiring focused monitoring and early warnings. The total deformation of the rock mass increases by approximately 5 mm after expansion, with the cumulative deformation reaching 14 mm. Post-expansion deformation converges within 180 days, with creep deformation of 2.5 mm–3.5 mm observed in both sidewalls, accounts for 51.0% of the total deformation during expansion. The surrounding rock reaches overall stability three years after the completion of expansion. These findings establish quantitative relationships between the excavation depth, time-dependent deformation, and stress redistribution and support the stability design, risk management, and infrastructure for ultra-deep tunnels in a stress state at a 2400 m depth. These insights are critical to ensuring the long-term stability of ultra-deep tunnels and operational safety assessments. Full article

To reveal the long-term deformation behavior of high-volume fly ash-based backfill under continuous mining and backfilling, a fly ash–cement backfill material with 73.0% fly ash content was developed, and creep characteristic tests considering initial damage were conducted. The results demonstrate that: (1) A calculation method for the initial damage of backfill based on stress–strain hysteresis loop cycles is proposed, with cumulative characteristics of initial damage across mining phases analyzed; (2) Creep behaviors of backfill affected by initial damage are investigated, revealing the weakening effect of initial damage on long-term bearing capacity; (3) An enhanced, nonlinear plastic damage element is developed, enabling the construction of an HKBN constitutive model capable of characterizing the complete creep behavior of backfill materials. The research establishes a theoretical framework for engineering applications of backfill materials with early-age strength below 5 MPa, while significantly enhancing the utilization efficiency of coal-based solid wastes. This study conducted uniaxial creep tests on coal samples under both natural and water-saturated conditions for durations of about 180 days per sample to study the stability of coal pillar dams of the Daliuta Coal Mine underground reservoir. Combined with synchronized acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, the research systematically revealed the time-dependent deformation mechanisms and damage evolution laws of coal under prolonged water immersion and natural conditions. The results indicate that water-immersed coal exhibits a unique negative creep phenomenon at the initial stage, with the strain rate down to −0.00086%/d, attributed to non-uniform pore compaction and elastic rebound effects. During the steady-state creep phase, the creep rates under water-immersed and natural conditions were comparable. However, water immersion led to an 11.4% attenuation in elastic modulus, decreasing from 2300 MPa to 2037 MPa. Water immersion would also suppress AE activity, leading to the average daily AE events of 128, which is only 25% of that under natural conditions. In the accelerating creep stage, the AE event rate surged abruptly, validating its potential as an early warning indicator for coal pillar instability. Based on the identified long-term strength of the coal sample, it is recommended to maintain operational loads below the threshold of 9 MPa. This research provides crucial theoretical foundations and experimental data for optimizing the design and safety monitoring of coal pillar dams in CMURs. Full article

Aluminum (Al) alloys exhibit exceptional mechanical properties, seeing widespread use in various industrial fields. Here, we use a multiscale simulation method combining phase field method, dislocation dynamics, and crystal plasticity finite element method to reveal the evolution law of precipitates, the interaction mechanism between dislocations and precipitates, and the grain-level creep deformation mechanism in 7A09 Al alloy under creep loading. The phase field method indicates that Al alloys tend to form fewer but larger precipitates during the creep process, under the dominant effect of stress-assisted Ostwald ripening. The dynamic equilibrium process of precipitate is not only controlled by classical diffusion mechanisms, but also closely related to the local strain field induced by dislocations and the elastic interaction between precipitates. Dislocation dynamics simulations indicate that the appearance of multiple dislocation loops around the precipitate during the creep process is the main dislocation creep deformation mechanism. A crystal plasticity finite element model is established based on experimental characterization to investigate the macroscopic creep mechanism. The dislocation climb is hindered by grain boundaries during creep, and high-density dislocation bands are formed around specific grains, promoting non-uniform plastic strain and leading to strong strain gradients. This work provides fundamental insights into understanding creep behavior and deformation mechanism of Al alloy for deep-sea environments. Full article

Molybdenum alloys as refractory alloys can provide strength levels at operating temperatures higher than that of Ni-base superalloys, yet their ductility is usually inferior to Ni-base alloys. Currently, commercialized Mo alloys are much fewer than Ni alloys. The motivation of this work is to explore opportunities of discovering useful alloys from the usually less investigated binary Mo-X systems (X = alloying element). With computational thermodynamics (CALPHAD), first-principles calculation, and mechanistic modeling combined, in this work a large number of Mo-X binary systems are investigated in terms of thermodynamic features and mechanical properties (yield strength, ductility, ductile-brittle transition temperature, creep resistance, and stress-strain relationship). The applicability of the alloy systems as solution-strengthened or precipitation-strengthened alloys is investigated. Starting from 92 Mo-X systems, a down-selection process is implemented, the results of which include three candidate systems for precipitation strengthening (Mo-B, Mo-C, Mo-Si) and one system (Mo-Re) for solid-solution strengthened alloy. In a composition optimization of Mo alloys to reach the properties of Ni-base superalloys, improving ductility is of top priority, for which Re plays a unique role. The presented workflow is also applicable to other bcc refractory alloy systems. Full article

This paper reviews the applications and performance advantages of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), engineered cementitious composite (ECC), and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) in composite flexural members. UHPC is characterized by its ultra-high strength, high toughness, excellent durability, and microcrack self-healing capability, albeit with high costs and complex production processes. ECC demonstrates superior tensile, flexural, and compressive strength and durability, yet it exhibits a lower elastic modulus and greater drying shrinkage strain. RAC, as an eco-friendly concrete, offers cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits, although it poses certain performance challenges. The focus of this review is on how to enhance the load-bearing capacity of composite beams or slabs by modifying the interface roughness, adjusting the thickness of the ECC or UHPC layer, and altering the cross-sectional form. The integration of diverse concrete materials improves the performance of beam and slab elements while managing costs. For instance, increasing the thickness of the UHPC or ECC layer typically enhances the load-bearing capacity of composite beams or plates by approximately 10% to 40%. Increasing the roughness of the interface can significantly improve the interfacial bond strength and further augment the ultimate load-bearing capacity of composite components. Moreover, the optimized design of material mix proportions and cross-sectional shapes can also contribute to enhancing the load-bearing capacity, crack resistance, and ductility of composite components. Nevertheless, challenges persist in engineering applications, such as the scarcity of long-term monitoring data on durability, fatigue performance, and creep effects. Additionally, existing design codes inadequately address the nonlinear behavior of multi-material composite structures, necessitating further refinement of design theories. Full article

Structure Formation and Curing Stage of Arbolite–Concrete Composites Based on Iron-Sulfur Binders

The paper deals with the issue of obtaining iron-sulfur-containing binders through their mechanochemical treatment using mutual neutralization and detoxification structure formation, and the curing stage of arbolite concrete composites based on industrial waste under long-term loading were also studied. Due to abrasion and impact, the mutual neutralization and detoxification methods of industrial waste toxic components through their mechanochemical treatment on the structures of ball mill LShM-750, were used to obtain iron-sulfur-containing binders. Pyrite cinders acted as oxidizing agents, and elementary technical sulfur had reduced properties. To determine the rate of creep strain growth, the load on prism samples was applied in the form of specially made spring units at stress levels of 0.15 Rbn, 0.44 Rbn, and 0.74 Rbn, where Rbn is the prism strength of iron-sulfur-containing arbolite concrete in compression. The strength and fracture formations of lightweight iron-sulfur concrete were studied using strain gauge apparatus and depth strain gauges glued on shredded reed fibers using adhesive, installed before concreting. It was revealed that the introduction of a sulfur additive within the range from 10 to 13% increases the compressive strength of iron-sulfur-containing concrete composites prepared with that of mortars at a water/solid ratio equal to 0.385 in wet and dry states. It is found that the deformations occurring under applied load growth proportionally to it, and deviation from this regularity was observed for lightweight iron-sulfur-containing concrete only at high compressive stresses. It was also proved that the destruction of iron-sulfur-containing arbolite occurs sequentially. First, the destruction of the mortar component is observed, and then the organic aggregate in the form of crushed reed fiber is destroyed. It was confirmed that arbolite concrete composite can be used as an effective wall material for civil engineering structure, especially in seismic regions of Kazakhstan. Full article
