Simulation Tests on Granite Pillar Rockburst

Parallelepipeds specimens were made to further investigate the rockburst occurrence mechanism of ore pillars in underground mining units. The investigation was carried out with uniaxial compression systems and real-time testing systems, such as stress, video, and acoustic emission, combined with digital image correlation (DIC) and SEM electron microscope scanning technology, to systematically analyze the evolution of rockburst of ore pillars, strain field characteristics, acoustic emission characteristics, mesoscopic characteristics of the rockburst fracture, morphology of the bursting crater, and debris characteristics. The findings demonstrate that the pillar’s rockburst process went through four stages, including the calm period, the particle ejection period, the block spalling period, and the full collapse period. According to DIC digital image correlation technology, the development of cracks in the rock is not obvious during the calm period, but during the small particle ejection and block spalling periods, the microcracks started to form and expand more quickly and eventually reached the critical surface of the rock, resulting in the formation of a complete macro-rockburst rupture zone. During stage I of the test, the rate of acoustic emission events and energy was relatively low; from stages II to IV, the rate gradually increased; and in stage V, the rate of acoustic emission events and energy reached its maximum value at the precise moment the rock exploded, releasing all of its stored energy. The specimen pit section primarily exhibits shear damage and the fracture exhibits shear fracture morphology, while the ejecta body primarily exhibits tensile damage and the fracture exhibits tensile fracture morphology. The location of the explosion pit is distributed on the left and right sides of the middle pillar of the specimen, and the shape is a deep “V”. The majority of the rockburst debris is greater than 5 mm, and it mostly takes the shape of thin plates, which is comparable to the field rockburst debris’s shape features. Full article

YOLO-Crater Model for Small Crater Detection

Craters are the most prominent geomorphological features on the surface of celestial bodies, which plays a crucial role in studying the formation and evolution of celestial bodies as well as in landing and planning for surface exploration. Currently, the main automatic crater detection models and datasets focus on the detection of large and medium craters. In this paper, we created 23 small lunar crater datasets for model training based on the Chang’E-2 (CE-2) DOM, DEM, Slope, and integrated data with 7 kinds of visualization stretching methods. Then, we proposed the YOLO-Crater model for Lunar and Martian small crater detection by replacing EioU and VariFocal loss to solve the crater sample imbalance problem and introducing a CBAM attention mechanism to mitigate interference from the complex extraterrestrial environment. The results show that the accuracy (P = 87.86%, R = 66.04%, and F1 = 75.41%) of the Lunar YOLO-Crater model based on the DOM-MMS (Maximum-Minimum Stretching) dataset is the highest and better than that of the YOLOX model. The Martian YOLO-Crater, trained by the Martian dataset from the 2022 GeoAI Martian Challenge, achieves good performance with P = 88.37%, R = 69.25%, and F1 = 77.65%. It indicates that the YOLO-Crater model has strong transferability and generalization capability, which can be applied to detect small craters on the Moon and other celestial bodies. Full article

As UAV technology has been leaping forward, small consumer-grade UAVs equipped with optical sensors are capable of easily acquiring high-resolution images, which show bright prospects in a wide variety of terrains and different fields. First, the crater rim landscape of the Dinosaur Valley ring formation located on the central Yunnan Plateau served as the object of the surface change detection experiment, and two repetitive UAV ground observations of the study area were performed at the same altitude of 180 m with DJI Phantom 4 RTK in the rainy season (P1) and the dry season (P2). Subsequently, the UAV-SfM digital three-dimensional (3D) modeling method was adopted to build digital models of the study area at two points in time, which comprised the Digital Surface Model (DSM), Digital Orthomosaic Model (DOM), and Dense Image Matching (DIM) point cloud. Lastly, a quantitative analysis of the surface changes at the pit edge was performed using the point-surface-body surface morphological characterization method based on the digital model. As indicated by the results, (1) the elevation detection of the corresponding check points of the two DSM periods yielded a maximum positive difference of 0.2650 m and a maximum negative value of −0.2279 m in the first period, as well as a maximum positive difference of 0.2470 m and a maximum negative value of −0.2589 m in the second period. (2) In the change detection of the two DOM periods, the vegetation was 9.99% higher in the wet season than in the dry season in terms of coverage, whereas the bare soil was 10.54% more covered than the wet season. (3) In general, the M3C2-PM distances of the P1 point cloud and the P2 point cloud were concentrated in the interval (−0.2,0.2), whereas the percentage of the interval (−0.1,0) accounted for 26.69% of all intervals. The numerical model of UAV-SfM was employed for comprehensive change detection analysis. As revealed by the result of the point elevation difference in the constant area, the technique can conform to the requirements of earth observation with certain accuracy. The change area suggested that the test area can be affected by natural conditions to a certain extent, such that the multi-source data can be integrated to conduct more comprehensive detection analysis. Discrete Element Modelling of Pit Crater Formation on Mars

Pit craters are now recognised as being an important part of the surface morphology and structure of many planetary bodies, and are particularly remarkable on Mars. They are thought to arise from the drainage or collapse of a relatively weak surficial material into an open (or widening) void in a much stronger material below. These craters have a very distinctive expression, often presenting funnel-, cone-, or bowl-shaped geometries. Analogue models of pit crater formation produce pits that typically have steep, nearly conical cross sections, but only show the surface expression of their initiation and evolution. Numerical modelling studies of pit crater formation are limited and have produced some interesting, but nonetheless puzzling, results. Presented here is a high-resolution, 2D discrete element model of weak cover (regolith) collapse into either a static or a widening underlying void. Frictional and frictional-cohesive discrete elements are used to represent a range of probable cover rheologies. Under Martian gravitational conditions, frictional-cohesive and frictional materials both produce cone- and bowl-shaped pit craters. For a given cover thickness, the specific crater shape depends on the amount of underlying void space created for drainage. When the void space is small relative to the cover thickness, craters have bowl-shaped geometries. In contrast, when the void space is large relative to the cover thickness, craters have cone-shaped geometries with essentially planar (nearing the angle of repose) slope profiles. Frictional-cohesive materials exhibit more distinct rims than simple frictional materials and, thus, may reveal some stratigraphic layering on the pit crater walls. In an extreme case, when drainage from the overlying cover is insufficient to fill an underlying void, skylights into the deeper structure are created. This study demonstrated that pit crater walls can exhibit both angle of repose slopes and stable, gentler, collapse slopes. In addition, the simulations highlighted that pit crater depth only provides a very approximate estimate of regolith thickness. Cone-shaped pit craters gave a reasonable estimate (proxy) of regolith thickness, whereas bowl-shaped pit craters provided only a minimum estimate. Finally, it appears that fresh craters with distinct, sharp rims like those seen on Mars are only formed when the regolith had some cohesive strength. Such a weakly cohesive regolith also produced open fissures, cliffs, and faults, and exposed regolith “stratigraphy” in the uppermost part of the crater walls. Full article

After almost three years of successful operation on Ceres, the Dawn spacecraft entered its last orbits around the dwarf planet and obtained a set of high-resolution images of 3 to 5 m/pixel. These images reveal a variety of morphologic features, including a set of asymmetric crater morphologies as observed earlier in the mission on the asteroid Vesta. We identified 269 craters, which are located between 60° N to 60° S latitude and 197° E to 265° E longitude, and investigated their morphological characteristics using a digital terrain model (DTM). These craters range in diameter from 0.30 to 4.2 km, and exhibit a sharp crater rim on the uphill side and a smooth one on the downhill side. We found that all asymmetric craters are formed on a sloping surface with the majority appearing at slope angles between 5 and 20 degrees. This implies that, as observed on Vesta, the topography is the main cause for these asymmetries. Full article
