This paper explores how uncertainty in climate change projections both shapes and is shaped by key epistemic, methodological, ethical, and political concerns. Drawing on a review of key philosophical sources, it examines the relationship between scientific objectivity and the influence of social, ethical, and political values in contexts of deep uncertainty. Authors such as Wendy Parker and Heather Douglas debate the role that social values play in the estimation and communication of scientific uncertainty, particularly when decisions carry significant ethical and political consequences. At the same time, several studies emphasize that, beyond the influence of values, there are structural limitations inherent to complex climate models that prevent uncertainty from being fully reduced. Taken together, these perspectives suggest that both evaluative judgments and technical constraints must be considered when interpreting and managing uncertainty in climate science, especially insofar as it informs collective decision-making processes. The article also examines how certain institutional practices tend to downplay uncertainty, generating biases that affect both scientific communication and public decision-making. It, therefore, explores potential solutions through more integrative approaches, such as robust modeling, risk assessments focused on low-probability but high-impact events (HILL), and collective ethical deliberation. The paper further discusses the concept of normative uncertainty, illustrated through the case of the Tempisque River water conflict, which highlights the difficulty of reconciling competing values. It concludes that, far from being eliminated, uncertainty must be managed through tools that integrate technical rationality, ethical sensitivity, and adaptive governance. Full article

Land use/land cover (LULC) change constitutes a critical driver influencing regional carbon cycling processes. Optimizing LULC structures represents a significant pathway toward the realization of carbon neutrality. This study takes Liaoning Province as a case area to analyze LULC changes from 2000 to 2020 and to assess their impacts on land use carbon emissions (LUCE) and ecosystem carbon storage (ECS). To accelerate the achievement of carbon neutrality, four development scenarios are established: natural development (ND), low-carbon emission (LCE), high-carbon storage (HCS), and carbon neutrality (CN). For each scenario, corresponding optimization objectives and constraint conditions are defined, and a multi-objective LULC optimization coupling model is formulated to optimize both the quantity structure and spatial pattern of LULC. On this basis, the model quantifies ECS and LUCE under the four scenarios and evaluates the economic value of each scenario and its contribution to the carbon neutrality target. Results indicate the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the extensive expansion of construction land resulted in a reduction in ECS by 12.72 × 106 t and an increase in LUCE by 150.44 × 106 t; (2) Compared to the ND scenario, the LCE scenario exhibited the most significant performance in controlling carbon emissions, while the HCS scenario achieved the highest increase in carbon sequestration. The CN scenario showed significant advantages in reducing LUCE, enhancing ECS, and promoting economic growth, achieving a reduction of 0.18 × 106 t in LUCE, an increase of 118.84 × 106 t in ECS, and an economic value gain of 3386.21 × 106 yuan. This study optimizes the LULC structure from the perspective of balancing economic development, LUCE reduction, and ECS enhancement. It addresses the inherent conflict between regional economic growth and ecological conservation, providing scientific evidence and policy insights for promoting LULC optimization and advancing carbon neutrality in similar regions. This article presents VRF-DETR, a lightweight real-time object detection framework for aerial remote sensing images, aimed at addressing the challenge of insufficient receptive fields for easily confused categories due to differences in height and perspective. Based on the RT-DETR architecture, our approach introduces three key innovations: the multi-scale receptive field adaptive fusion (MSRF2) module replaces the Transformer encoder with parallel dilated convolutions and spatial-channel attention to adjust receptive fields for confusing objects dynamically; the gated multi-scale context (GMSC) block reconstructs the backbone using Gated Multi-Scale Context units with attention-gated convolution (AGConv), reducing parameters while enhancing multi-scale feature extraction; and the context-guided fusion (CGF) module optimizes feature fusion via context-guided weighting to resolve multi-scale semantic conflicts. Evaluations were conducted on both the VisDrone2019 and UAVDT datasets, where VRF-DETR achieved the mAP50 of 52.1% and the mAP50-95 of 32.2% on the VisDrone2019 validation set, surpassing RT-DETR by 4.9% and 3.5%, respectively, while reducing parameters by 32% and FLOPs by 22%. It maintains real-time performance (62.1 FPS) and generalizes effectively, outperforming state-of-the-art methods in accuracy-efficiency trade-offs for aerial object detection. Full article

Background: Since the election of Hamas in 2006, Gaza has endured eight major military conflicts, culminating in the ongoing 2023–2025 war, now surpassing 520 days. This protracted violence, compounded by a 17-year blockade, has resulted in the near-total collapse of Gaza’s health system. Over 49,000 deaths, widespread displacement, and the destruction of more than 60% of health infrastructure have overwhelmed both local capacity and international humanitarian response. Objectives: This narrative review aims to examine and synthesize the current literature (October 2023–April 2025) on the health crisis in Gaza, with a specific focus on identifying key themes and knowledge gaps relevant to rebuilding a sustainable health system. The review also seeks to outline strategic pathways for recovery in the context of ongoing conflict and systemic deprivation. Methods: Given the urgency and limitations of empirical data from conflict zones, a narrative review approach was adopted. Fifty-two sources—including peer-reviewed articles, editorials, reports, and correspondence—were selected through targeted searches using Medline and Google Scholar. The analysis was framed within a public health and political economy perspective, also taking health system building blocks into consideration. Results: The reviewed literature emphasizes emergency needs: trauma care, infectious disease control, and supply chain restoration. Innovations such as mobile clinics and telemedicine offer interim solutions. Gaps include limited attention to mental health (including that of health workers), local governance, and sustainable planning frameworks. Conclusions: Sustainable reconstruction requires a durable ceasefire; international stewardship aligned with local ownership; and a phased, equity-driven strategy emphasizing primary care, mental health, trauma management, and community engagement. Urban development through property development in central parts of cities rather than through sprawl is key to achieving sustainable future cities. However, realising desired projects in complex city centre environments is challenging and risky due to the involvement of numerous actors. This paper offers novel insights into developers’ perspectives on how the conduct of public authorities influences city centre zoning plan processes. Based on interviews with 11 employees of property development firms, working on mixed-use city centre projects ranging from 1100 to 112,000 m2 Gross Floor Area in small and medium-sized Norwegian cities, the study identifies key challenges developers experience in their interactions with public authorities across sectors and administrative levels during planning processes and analyses how these challenges relate to goals, knowledge and power among key actors. The study finds that public authorities can improve the efficiency of zoning plan processes and enhance city centre project delivery by altering their conduct. First, by more explicitly clarifying that the realisation of desired city centre property developments is a primary policy objective, maintaining this focus throughout the processes and taking responsibility for reconciling conflicts in ways that enable feasible projects. Second, by improving their knowledge of the fundamental need for projects to be profitable in order to be realised, and the impact of authorities’ requirements on project viability. Third, by exercising their agenda-setting power more constructively and flexibly throughout the zoning plan process. The paper examines underexplored perspectives in planning research and yields actionable recommendations for planning practice. Full article

Background/Objective: Non-specific chronic neck pain (CNP) greatly affects the social dynamics, the work performance, and the personal independence of patients. Research emphasizes the significant role of sociological factors, psychological stress, and emotional conflicts in the development, regulation, and endurance of chronic pain. This study aims to explore the influence of emotional conflicts on pain experience among CNP patients, drawing from their experiences. Methods: A phenomenological investigation was conducted, grounded in Heideggerian philosophy, involving CNP patients and healthcare professionals in Madrid, Spain. Participants were recruited from Primary Health Care centers. Data collection methods included semi-structured in-depth interviews, focus groups with patients, focus groups with healthcare providers, participant observation, and reflective diaries. Hermeneutic phenomenology guided the data interpretation. Thematic analysis was applied to transcribed audio recordings. Results: This study included 12 patients with CNP who participated in two in-depth interviews conducted at different time points—before and after receiving physiotherapy treatment. Additionally, 23 CNP patients took part in four focus groups, and 46 healthcare professionals (including physicians, nurses, and physiotherapists) participated in three focus groups. A hermeneutic analysis revealed the following three main categories: “Self-concept and pain experience”, “Daily life obligations and pain perception”, and “Emotional conflicts related to CNP”. Patients described themselves as nervous, having communication difficulties, and often prioritizing family or work tasks, leading to stress. They indicated that their interpersonal conflicts with close relations intensified their perceived pain in the neck, head, shoulders, and arms. Conclusions: From the perspective of the participants in this study, interpersonal and emotional conflicts appear to influence their perception of CNP. Full article

The aim of the article is to analyze the relationship between the Christian faith and the spiritual traditions of the indigenous peoples of Latin America, seeking to identify elements that make it possible to trace paths of dialogue and mutual cooperation. It shows that historically, there have been tensions and conflicts between these traditions, but today, there is a path towards overcoming this reality through social solidarity, which serves as a basis for dialogue between the ways of believing. The research method is comparative and involves a qualitative analysis of the bibliography dealing with the relationship between the Church and Latin American indigenous spiritualities. The bibliographic base is documental, with emphasis on the conferences of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), the Synod for the Amazon (2019) and the magisterium of Pope Francis, read from the perspective of the Second Vatican Council and the current theology of religions. The conclusion is that the Church is developing an important social dialogue to promote justice and the rights of indigenous peoples. This dialogue serves as the basis for a dialogue with the beliefs and spiritualities of these peoples. The challenge for this is to review mission objectives and methods in order to overcome the conversionist perspective in the relationship with indigenous peoples, taking paths of mutual respect and acceptance and valuing them beyond being the recipients of evangelization. In this way, indigenous spiritual traditions can be recognized not only as “seeds” of the Word to be developed by evangelization but as an already mature fruit of God’s relationship with these peoples. Background/Objectives: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a preventable cause of morbidity in the neurocritical ill patient population. There is ongoing debate regarding the optimal timing and choice of pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis (PTP) and how these decisions relate to balancing the risk of bleeding complications with the development of VTE. Our review assesses the available data to provide un updated perspective to clinicians. Methods: A literature search was performed in December 2024 in PubMed and EMBASE. We focused on the timing of PTP initiation and the comparison of enoxaparin (ENX) with unfractionated heparin (UFH) in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), spinal or spinal cord injury (SCI), or requirement for neurosurgical intervention. Results: We included 90 articles spanning a total of 669,725 patients with injuries of interest within neurocritical care. The existing data largely signaled a benefit of early administration (<24–72 h) of PTP in VTE prevention, though some studies suggested increased risks of complications. Data to inform a preference for PTP agent was less robust, though a signal of benefit for enoxaparin is suggested for subsets of patients with acute brain injury such as TBI. The data quality is limited by the large body of retrospective studies, the heterogeneity of study populations, outcome definitions, study methodologies, and the lack of detailed reporting of relevant factors. Conclusions: Our review provides an updated assessment of the available data on PTP timing and choice in neurocritically ill patients with hemorrhages or surgical need, with a practice-focused overview for clinicians balancing VTE risk with bleeding risk. The data suggest that in most circumstances, early PTP appears safe and indicated, and that low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) can be considered over UFH in certain subsets of patients. Still, data gaps and conflicting results highlight the need for patient-specific decision making and indicate that more robust research is warranted to inform optimal clinical practice. Full article

Historic centres are extremely complex parts of contemporary cities, particularly from morphological, architectural, and cultural points of view, where a significant proportion of the land area may be occupied by built heritage sites that require protection and conservation. These urban contexts are also characterised by scarce green and public open spaces endowment, a high proportion of private property, and high levels of natural risk exposure. From a climate change adaptation perspective, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have emerged as measures to manage urban ecosystems to address environmental and societal challenges. To overcome the conflicting objectives of climate change adaptation and built heritage preservation, this study proposes a three-step methodology applied to the historic centre of Catania (Italy): (i) Land-Use/Landownership and Land Cover/Maintenance and Quality analyses; (ii) Land Transformability Assessment; (iii) Land Transformation Scenarios Assessment. According to this methodology, five Land Transformation Scenarios have been drawn up: (1) NbS full installation; (2) NbS installation with some limitations; (3) NbS installation after re-arrangement; (4) NbS installation strongly limited; (5) NbS installation not viable. This approach allowed us to identify the most feasible and suitable buildings and open spaces, while distinguishing public and private properties, to implement a more comprehensive integration of NbS and built heritage preservation in historic cities for mutual benefits. Economic and Social Aspects of the Space Sector Development Based on the Modified Structure–Conduct–Performance Framework

Background: The global space economy has grown remarkably, witnessing a 10-fold increase in active satellites during the last 15 years. This growth was accompanied by both the increase in geopolitical tensions feeding huge investments (the New Space Race), on the one hand, and the transformation, shifting from a domain historically dominated by government-led programs to one partially energized by commercial players and innovative business models (“New Space”), on the other hand. Objective: To assess the space economy’s current state and future prospects by considering its economic and social dimensions. Methods: Over 120 scholarly articles and “grey” literature positions (e.g., industry reports) were reviewed. The review was structured by a modified Structure–Conduct–Performance framework originally developed by industrial organization (IO) scholars. Findings: Outer space creates extremely harsh conditions for placing and operating objects in orbits, which results in high launching costs, steep reliability standards, capital intensity, and risks that are unmatched in most terrestrial industries. One of the main motivations to venture into this harsh domain was, and still is, the desire to dominate or the fear of being subjugated by others. This “original sin”, born of geopolitical rivalries, continues to cast a shadow over the space economy, channeling the majority of public space budgets into military-related programs. Moreover, many space technologies have a dual-use feature. Not surprisingly, governments are still the major source of demand, dominating midstream in the space value chain. This triad—harsh physics, great power rivalry, and a state-centric midstream—produces a specificity of the sector. In the recent two decades, new entrants (called “New Space”) have begun altering market structure, resulting in new conduct patterns focused on pursuits towards serial production, reusability, and lowering costs. Performance outcomes are mixed. While some efficiency gains are unprecedented, some doubts about market power and negative externalities arise. The assessment of the space economy’s performance is a challenge, as such, due to the blurred boundary between political objectives (supplying public goods, mitigating negative externalities) and economic optimization. Such trade-offs are becoming even more complicated considering the potential conflict between national and global perspectives. The paper offers a preliminary, descriptive study of the space economy through the lens of the modified S-C-P framework, laying basic foundations for the future, possibly more rigorous research of the increasingly important space economy. Real-time object detection on embedded unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is crucial for emergency rescue, autonomous driving, and target tracking applications. However, UAVs’ hardware limitations create conflicts between model size and detection accuracy. Moreover, challenges such as complex backgrounds from the UAV’s perspective, severe occlusion, densely packed small targets, and uneven lighting conditions complicate real-time detection for embedded UAVs. To tackle these challenges, we propose AUHF-DETR, an embedded detection model derived from RT-DETR. In the backbone, we introduce a novel WTC-AdaResNet paradigm that utilizes reversible connections to decouple small-object features. We further replace the original global attention mechanism with the PSA module to strengthen inter-feature relationships within each ROI, thereby resolving the embedded challenges posed by RT-DETR’s complex token computations. In the encoder, we introduce a BDFPN for multi-scale feature fusion, effectively mitigating the small-object detection difficulties caused by the baseline’s Hungarian assignment. Extensive experiments on the public VisDrone2019, HIT-UAV, and CARPK datasets demonstrate that compared with RT-DETR-r18, AUHF-DETR achieves a 2.1% increase in APs on VisDrone2019, reduces the parameter count by 49.0%, and attains 68 FPS (AGX Xavier), thus satisfying the real-time requirements for small-object detection in embedded UAVs. As human-driven vehicles (HDVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs) coexist on the road, the asymmetry between their driving behaviors, decision-making processes, and responses to traffic scenarios introduces new safety challenges, especially in complex merging areas where frequent interactions occur. The existing traffic safety analysis of mixed traffic is mainly to analyze each safety index separately, lacking comprehensive evaluation. To investigate the safety risk more broadly, this study proposes a comprehensive safety evaluation framework for mixed traffic flows in merging areas from the perspective of traffic conflicts, emphasizing the asymmetry between HDVs and AVs. Firstly, an indicator of Emergency Lane Change Risk Frequency is introduced, considering the interaction characteristics of the merging area. A safety evaluation index system is established from lateral, longitudinal, temporal, and spatial dimensions. Then, indicator weights are determined using a modified game theory approach that combines the entropy weight method with the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method, ensuring a balanced integration of objective data and expert judgment. Subsequently, a cloud model enhanced with the fuzzy mean value method is then developed to evaluate comprehensive safety. Finally, a simulation experiment is designed to simulate traffic operation of different traffic scenarios under various traffic flow rates, AV penetration rates, and ramp flow ratios, and the traffic safety of each scenario is estimated. Moreover, the evaluation results are compared against those derived from the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) method to verify the reliability of the comprehensive evaluation model. The findings indicate that safety levels deteriorate with increasing total flow rates and ramp flow ratios. Notably, as AV penetration rises from 20% to 100%, safety conditions improve significantly, especially under high-flow scenarios. However, at AV penetration rates below 20%, an increase of the AV penetration rate may worsen safety. Overall, the proposed integrated approach provides a more robust and accurate assessment of safety risks than single-factor evaluations, providing deeper insights into the asymmetries in traffic interactions and offering valuable insights for traffic management and AV deployment strategies. Objectives: There are numerous and varied theoretical gaps in the study of work–family interaction, which limits the understanding and approach to this phenomenon, especially among vulnerable groups such as critical care nursing professionals. In this regard, the objective of this study was to theorize the work–family interaction process among nurses working in Critical Care Units in Chile. Methods: Constructivist grounded theory was employed to conceptualize the phenomenon of interest from the perspectives of nurses, their families, and administrative staff. Data were collected through observations in two high-complexity hospitals in Chile, one public and one private; document analysis; and 51 in-depth interviews. Data analysis was conducted using constant comparisons and multi-level coding. To ensure rigor, the study followed the 13 criteria proposed by Charmaz and Thornberg for constructivist grounded theory studies and was approved by a Scientific Ethics Committee. Results: The reconciliation of work and personal roles emerged as the core process explaining the interaction between work and personal life among nurses in Critical Care Units. This complex and multidimensional process comprised three stages: resisting the war of roles, hitting rock bottom, and reconciling, through which nurses attempt to achieve balance between work and personal roles. Conclusions: We developed a theory that explains the work–family interaction process. The theory developed highlights the importance of an integrated approach that considers both sources of conflict and reconciliation strategies. Addressing this phenomenon effectively requires interventions at the individual, organizational, and public policy levels. Full article

Effective project management depends on a deep understanding of the human attributes that influence project success. This study aims to quantify the causal relationships between human resource variables in order to establish a prioritisation criterion for workforce allocation in industrial projects. Traditional statistical models often overlook the multidimensional nature of these factors, limiting their effectiveness in complex planning contexts. To address this, the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory method is used to assess and prioritise the key competencies required of project personnel. The analysis is based on an extensive literature review of management and industrial project studies, combined with data collected from experienced managers through structured questionnaires. Respondents assessed how different human resource attributes interact and influence each other. The results show that personal motivation, innovation, education, work–life balance, flexibility and adaptability are dominant causal factors. Stakeholder relations, conflict management, negotiation skills, objectivity and impartiality are more reactive. This study is differentiated in that it analyses a complex network of 400 influence relationships, providing a more comprehensive perspective than previous research. By integrating a structured decision-making approach, the results contribute to both the academic literature and practical applications, supporting more effective workforce planning and improved performance in industrial projects. Background/Objectives: Violence in healthcare settings, especially in emergency departments (ED), remains an important public health issue worldwide. Thus, additional insight into the effect of these incidents into nurses’ professional attitudes, their work life and related implications to patient safety issues may be valuable. We investigated ED nurses’ living experience of exposure to workplace violence by healthcare service users, with focus on the impact on them. Methods: Following a qualitative study design, data were collected (January–June 2024) through semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions and were analyzed according to an inductive, content analysis approach. Participants provided informed consent, and data collection continued until theoretical saturation was reached. Results: The sample included six nurses. Various forms of workplace violence and its psychological, social, and professional consequences were identified. Violence was more frequently perpetrated by patients’ relatives, with verbal aggression being the most common form. A fundamental divergence in needs and expectation between patients and their family members/caregivers, on one side, and participants, on the other, revealed a pronounced empathy gap. Each group remained focused on its own priorities while struggling to recognize or accommodate others’ perspectives. This lack of mutual understanding contributed to tension that, in some cases, escalated even into physically violent incidents against the participants. A similar gap was identified between the participants’ needs and administrators’ attitudes and related policies. The failure of administrative measures to bridge this gap was described as a crucial factor in further escalating conflicts and tension in the ED. Conclusions: Further research on quality improvement projects, including all stakeholders, aiming to enhance empathy in all parties involved is proposed. Full article
