Background: Commissioning of ‘joint care’ across teenage and young adult (TYA) principal treatment centres (PTC) and regional designated hospitals was introduced to enable cancer care closer to home, while providing support through the TYA multidisciplinary team. We aimed to explore the processes being used to enable inter-organisational collaboration under joint care models through rapid ethnography. Methods: Healthcare professionals in TYA PTCs in England and Wales between June 2022 and December 2023 were identified by the TYA lead in each PTC as delivering TYA cancer care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted virtually or by telephone based on the structuration model of collaboration proposed by D’Amour. Data were analysed against the model through framework analysis. Results: Our study highlighted variation across the different dimensions of inter-organisational collaboration. We found that healthcare professionals delivering TYA cancer care were working toward a shared goal but this was not always achieved. Social interaction between professionals was required to develop relationships and trust, but opportunities for social interaction were not regularly available. Processes for sharing information were not streamlined, so there were instances when information could not be shared between organisations. Interventions to achieve coordinated care, such as an outreach team, supported the delivery of joint care but these were not available in every region. While there were some levels of leadership within aspects of services, there were limited examples nationally or across geographical regions, which hindered the development of coordinated care. Conclusions: Coordination of care is mostly developing; however, the shared vision and goals dimension did achieve full active collaboration. The implementation of a service specification will address regional leadership requirements, but resources are required to extend the delivery of interventions to support coordination and collaboration, allowing the commissioned model of care to be delivered safely. Anthropologists increasingly engage with healthcare systems, using ethnographic research as a critical tool for understanding and improving healthcare practices. The resulting interactions and collaborations between ethnographers, healthcare practitioners, and administrators often give rise to ‘frictions’—moments of tension, frustrations, misalignments, and misunderstandings. In physics, friction is the force that one object’s surface exerts over another’s to slow its motion, push back against its inherent energy and movement, and is a constant at all touchpoints between the objects, from both sides. While friction often evokes negative connotations, in this article, we look beyond frictions as obstacles, and instead explore them as productive forces that can drive transformation in the healthcare improvement field. Drawing both on the authors’ own experiences and on the work of other anthropologists, we reflect on how friction helps shed light on the dynamics of interdisciplinary work and improve collaboration. We unpack how conceptual and ethical frictions in applied ethnographic work reveal deeper structural and relational insights that would otherwise remain obscured. This article contributes to anthropological discussions on interdisciplinary collaboration and applied practice, and it offers concrete strategies for handling different kinds of friction in health-related ethnographic research. While ethnography has held an essential place in the study of Indigenous rock imagery (i.e., petroglyphs and pictographs) in the United States for the past century and a half, rarely are Tribes and other descendant communities involved throughout the entire research program—from conception to publication. This contrasts with recent developments within more traditional “dirt” archaeology, where over the past 30 years, Tribes have assumed greater roles in decision-making, fieldwork, artifact curation, data management, interpretation of results, and repatriation of ancestral belongings. In concert with these changes, Indigenous archaeology has emerged as a domain of theory and practice wherein archaeological research and cultural heritage management center the voices and interests of Indigenous communities. Collaboration among researchers and Indigenous communities has proven to be an effective means of practicing Indigenous archaeology and advancing its goals, but research into rock imagery all too often still limits Indigenous engagement and knowledge to the interpretation of the imagery. This article highlights a case study in Tribal collaboration from the North American Southwest in the interest of advancing an Indigenous archaeology of rock imagery. Full article

Nowadays, evidence-based management (EBM) plays an important role in bringing sustainability into the decision-making process in the healthcare industry. The present study examines how evidence-based management affects the strategic decision criteria for the cost efficiency, equity, and accessibility of medical services in Saudi Arabia. A mixed-methods approach used hybrid surveys, interactive focus groups, digital ethnography, and experience sampling methods to collect data from healthcare managers, policymakers, and stakeholders. Structural equation modeling (SEM), latent semantic analysis (LSA), XGBoost models, and dynamic network analysis (DNA), among others, were used to provide robust insights about the system. The results showed a 25 percent increase in cost efficiency, a 20 percent improvement in inequitable resource allocation, and a 15 percent improvement in accessibility with evidence-based management adoption. According to the XGBoost models, streamlined resource management explains 30% of the variation in cost efficiency, and data-driven decision-making practices explain 35% of the variance in equity performance. After EBM implementation, collaborative efforts among stakeholders increased by 40%, as determined by DNA analysis. In addition, time-series analysis revealed a 22% reduction in operational delays, improving service delivery. These results suggest that evidence-based management is an important opportunity to ‘bend the curve’ of patient care, driving healthcare sustainability by optimizing resource use, equity, and accessibility. The contributions of this research to the broader discourse on sustainable healthcare management lie in its proven actionable insights and scalable framework for evidence-based management practices. The integration of advanced analytics underlines its relevance for global healthcare systems to attain long-term efficiency and sustainability. Full article

Despite substantial instructional attention to large-enrollment university courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), they tend to have high rates of D, F, and Withdraw (DFW) at the introductory level that disproportionally disadvantage historically minoritized and underrepresented students, such as students identified as women, low-income, first-generation, or of color. While postsecondary institutions have recently explored big data and learning analytics to drive their institutional student success efforts, well-known shortfalls in student success in large STEM courses remain. This chapter documents an evidence-based approach at a large, R1 midwestern university that enriches robust data infrastructure with qualitative ethnographic methods. Applied to a gateway computer science course, these methods center students’ day-to-day learning realities, including disparate educational opportunities, in ways that interrogate barriers to and shortfalls in student success. The resulting case study describes our ethnographic approach, the shortfalls it uncovers, our future directions with this work, and how other faculty members and institutions can apply lessons learned to promote efficacy, attainment, and equity in gateway STEM courses. Implementations drawn from course vignettes point to revisions in design and preparation of group learning activities, strategic integration of lecture and lab sessions, course navigation aids, and pedagogical training for teaching assistants. Aiming to better understand the relationship between youth activism and institutional politics, this article analyzes young climate activists’ interactions with political parties and how they shape the dynamics of the School Strike for Climate. Through a multi-sited ethnography in Portugal’s two major cities, we examined the participation experiences of young climate strikers from both chapters of the movement, revealing the contingent and complex development of their relationships with party politics, which ultimately influences the dynamics of Portuguese youth climate activism. The ethnographic data uncovered ambivalent and tensional relationship patterns with political parties in the two local groups. While closeness and collaboration with actors linked to institutional politics aimed at strengthening the climate movement’s broader political representation, it also prompted resistance, leading to internal conflicts within the movement. Our findings highlight differing political strategies and ideological stands among local groups, as well as tensions and ambivalences in the interactions with political parties. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges of sustaining the School Strike for Climate movement over time and the ways in which activist movements negotiate political affiliations and internal cohesion. Racial justice rhetoric is approached via collaborative auto-ethnography and oral interpretation, demonstrating how race, place, and faith intersect in a community devoted to religion and education. Community narratives wield immense power, but they are never complete. Stories and the cultures that retell them are alive and growing, so finding a voice can influence change. When racial justice voices are gradually over-written and forgotten, archival research and a commitment to engaged scholarship can identify and hold up historical leaders as role models. This article reintroduces a largely forgotten Catholic leader, Monsignor Thomas G. Fahy, into higher education’s narrative on race. Freie’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed provides a theoretical frame for an auto-ethnography relating pentimento “un/re/discovery” of Fahy leading to a digital oral/aural performance of some of his most enlightened speeches. Northern New Jersey saw widespread civil unrest and violence in the 1960s, and rather than turn away, Fahy turned “right out the gate” to listen and collaborate with Newark’s racial justice activists. Conclusions include a need for sustained attention to historical justice leaders in nurturing positive futures and the socio-political power of storytelling as a digital/oral rhetorical form. Recent research underscores the significance of data-led and collaborative reflection in enhancing teaching practices and professional development of teachers. While video-based reflections have been extensively studied, the potential of corpus-based methods remains underexplored. We address this gap in two ways. Firstly, we describe a research and development project in which we employed a corpus linguistic tool to analyse and reflect on our own lectures, with the ulterior aim of promoting a corpus-based reflective practice (CBRP) model that would help other teachers do the same. Secondly, we introduce collaborative micro auto-ethnography (CMAE) to illustrate how our model can facilitate the noticing of different aspects of teacher talk and lead to, what we call, snowball reflections (i.e., a sequence of reflective talk that extends a topic and spreads from one participant to the next). Our approach shows that corpus analysis, coupled with collaborative reflections, has the potential to not only enhance language use but also stimulate broader and deeper pedagogical discussions on and insights into teaching styles and student engagement, going beyond analyses of single words and lexico-grammatical patterns in teacher talk. We argue that there should be institutional support for developing new corpus-based professional development initiatives and that researchers can benefit from using ethnographic data together with detailed analyses of interactions. This paper examines the role of commons-based activist ethnography in reshaping the dynamics between researchers and underprivileged mobile youth (UMY), focusing on the opportunities and ethical challenges of this approach. Conducted in youth centers in Thessaloniki, Greece, the study explores how trust, affect, and collaborative knowledge creation supported agency among UMY while confronting systemic barriers and power asymmetries. Using qualitative ethnographic methods, the research investigates the role of convivial spaces and the ambiance of the commons in creating meaningful connections and emotional resilience, enabling the participants to articulate aspirations and reclaim agency. The dual role of the researcher as an advocate and observer raised questions about representation and power dynamics. This paper contributes to discussions on activist ethnography by offering insights into its possibilities and limitations in advancing transformative research with marginalized populations. Background: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex eating disorder that often requires inpatient care, where treatment experiences are influenced by both the illness and the surrounding environment. Sensory issues in AN are increasingly acknowledged for their impact on treatment engagement and outcomes. Despite this, the ways in which the sensory landscape of inpatient settings shapes patients’ lived experiences and meaning-making processes remain underexplored. Methods: This study employed collaborative sensory ethnography to explore how the sensory environment of an inpatient eating disorder ward shapes patients’ lived experiences. Drawing on multimodal and embodied approaches, a novel proof-of-concept method was developed, combining sensory-attuned guided reflection with AI-assisted visualization. This framework supported patients in exploring and articulating their embodied sensory experiences, linking their emotional and physical states to the ward’s sensory environment through metaphorical reasoning. Results: The findings reveal two central themes: a sense of entrapment within the illness and its treatment, and ambivalence toward both. The study highlights how the sensory environment and spatial layout of the ward amplify these experiences, demonstrating the tension between strict safety protocols and patients’ needs for agency and autonomy. Conclusions: This study illustrates the role of the sensory landscape in shaping treatment experiences and contributing to the broader lived experiences of individuals with AN. The experience of sensory cues in inpatient settings is closely intertwined with contextual and embodied meanings, often evoking complex feelings of entrapment and ambivalence toward both the illness and its treatment. These findings highlight the potential for holistic sensory and spatial adaptations in therapeutic interventions to alleviate such feelings and, consequently, improve patient engagement and well-being. Latinx populations in the USA have grown steadily in recent decades, with significant increases taking place in “new destination communities” of the U.S. South. The focus of our paper is to highlight opportunities for working with these populations, including traditional sociolinguistic ethnographies and community-engaged research. We highlight an initiative named “The SEC Spanish Consortium” which is an interinstitutional collaboration centered on scholarship and service involving Latinx populations in new destination communities of the U.S. South. We show that ongoing and future scholarly work in the U.S. South can act as a mechanism for documenting these emerging Latinx communities while simultaneously serving the underrepresented and minority speakers of these linguistic varieties. True crime podcasts invite their listeners to crowdsource investigations online, solving cases that have fallen through the cracks of the criminal justice system. Through a cultural criminologist lens, this digital ethnography examines The Vanished podcast as a case study of how true crime listeners engage with solving cases in digital community spaces. Previous studies have dismissed true crime fans as pseudo police acting as digital vigilantes. Podcasting communities provide an important public service, working as participatory journalists to investigate the story and report the truth. Rather than depending on law enforcement permission to organize, online crime-investigation communities leverage the Internet’s function as an organizing agent for mobilization beyond the parameters of conventional social structures and formal government agencies. Findings reveal a six-step process of case collaboration between podcast producers, active listeners, and family and friends of missing persons. Other communities can apply this unique system to successfully investigate crime, suggesting implications for individuals within marginalized groups less likely to find justice through the formal legal system. This article discusses collaborative ethnography as a meaningful source for spatial research, in particular, for participatory methodologies in urban planning and placemaking processes. It investigates the experiences with co-creation and co-research in different research projects to gain insight into the performance of collaborative ethnography as a technique to explore and enrich local knowledge. To better understand the possible causal relationships between the experience gained in the projects and the learnt lessons, we also identify recommendations for improving research methodologies to be applied in placemaking. This article concludes that collaborative ethnography is an effective tool for adding value to spatial co-research and co-creation processes. It opens opportunities for the co-production of space, ideas and knowledge, contributing at the same time to better informed decision-making. It also helps improve ideas and gather insights into the spatial needs of focus groups. Full article

Multilingual speakers’ languaging practices are undervalued and problematised in formal teaching and learning spaces in higher education. The environment has legitimised monolingualism as the only acceptable practice, hence students often lack the confidence to recruit their full linguistic repertoires. In the third and fourth years of their Occupational Therapy studies, many African students faced challenges due to socio-historic-political factors that put them at risk of failure. These challenges were addressed in academic support tutorial spaces using pedagogical translanguaging. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the use of translanguaging as a socially just strategy, its affordances, and its challenges. This paper utilises data from a case study within a larger project aiming to describe the use of translanguaging in multilingual teaching and learning settings at a historically White university in South Africa. The case study comprised of eight African students. Linguistic ethnography and Moment analysis were employed. Pedagogical translanguaging and humour were used to create a space conducive to collaborative learning and co-construction of knowledge that granted epistemic access to occupational therapy discourse. Respect and dignity were fundamental in fostering cohesion, improving confidence, enacting speaking rights, and creating a sense of belonging among students who often felt alienated. Full article

Within the Arab community of Israel, the influence of masculine perceptions, violence, the carrying of weapons, and their subsequent use are growing concerns that significantly impact public safety. The omnipresence of social media further complicates this narrative, potentially reshaping traditional notions and behaviors associated with masculinity. This study endeavors to delve deep into the relationships between masculinity, violence, and weapon carrying and use and the role that social media plays in shaping these dynamics among Arab adolescent boys and young men in Israel. By employing a qualitative constructivist lens, the research integrated content analysis, digital ethnography, and rhetorical semiotic analysis. The participants included 40 Israeli Arab Muslim and Christian adolescent boys and young men. A recurrent theme was the belief in “Maktub”, signifying preordained events, pointing to a profound cultural relationship with fatalistic views on violence. Participants’ backgrounds in relation to violence influenced their stance on weapon carrying. There was a prevalent mistrust towards law enforcement. Social media’s role was pronounced, with genre preferences acting as indicators of violent inclinations. Culturally sensitive interventions are imperative, and it is essential to construct an early childhood educational program that includes positive male role models while collaborating with epistemic authorities.
