This study investigates the synthesis and characterization of boron-modified nanotubular titania (NTO) arrays fabricated via a single-step anodizing process with varying concentrations of boric acid (BA). Following anodization, a reductive heat treatment was applied to facilitate the crystallization of the anatase phase in the boron-modified NTO. The effect of the BA concentration on the structural, morphological, and photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of the NTOs was systematically explored through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), luminescence, and UV-Vis spectrometry. The introduction of boron during anodization facilitated the formation of sub-bandgap states, thereby enhancing the light absorption and electron mobility. This study revealed the optimal BA concentration that yielded a 3.3-fold enhancement of the PEC performance, attributed to a reduction in the bandgap energy. Notably, the highest incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) was observed for NTO samples anodized at a 0.10 M BA concentration. These findings underscore the promise of boron-modified NTOs for advanced photocatalytic applications, particularly in solar-driven water-splitting processes. Full article

In this research work, boron-doped titanium oxide (B-TiO2) was prepared by the sol-gel method to investigate its behavior in the degradation of the recalcitrant hormone estriol (E3). The doped photocatalyst was synthesized at different boron/titania ratios of 2, 3, and 5 wt.% of boron with respect to the TiO2 content. The obtained materials were characterized by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The textural properties, specific surface area, and porosity were obtained from N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms by BET and BJH methods, respectively. The photocatalytic performance of each synthesized catalyst was evaluated on the degradation of an aqueous solution (10 mg/L) of estriol (E3) under simulated solar radiation. The variation in the hormone concentration was determined by the HPLC technique, and the mineralization was evaluated by the quantification of total organic carbon (TOC). The obtained results indicated that the catalyst with 3 wt.% of boron incorporation exhibited the best performance on the degradation and mineralization of estriol, achieving its complete degradation at 300 kJ/m2 of accumulated energy and 71% of mineralization at 400 kJ/m2 (2 h) obtaining a non-toxic effluent. Semiconductor titanium dioxide in its basic form or doped with metals and non-metals is being extensively used in wastewater treatment by photocatalysis due to its versatile nature. Other numerous characteristics including being environmentally friendly, non-pernicious, economical, multi-phase, highly hydrophilic, versatile physio-chemical features, chemical stability, suitable band gap, and corrosion-resistance, along with its low price make TiO2 the best candidate in the field of photocatalysis. Commercially, semiconductor and synthesized photocatalysts—which have been investigated for the last few decades owing to their wide band gap—and the doping of titania with p-block elements (non-metals) such as oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, boron, carbon, phosphorus, and iodine enhances their photocatalytic efficiency under visible-light irradiation. This is because non-metals have a strong oxidizing ability. The key focus of this review is to discuss the various factors affecting the photocatalytic activity of non-metal-doped titania by decreasing its band gap. The working parameters discussed are the effect of pH, dyes concentration, photocatalyst’s size and structure, pollutants concentration and types, the surface area of photocatalysts, the effect of light intensity and irradiation time, catalyst loading, the effect of temperature, and doping impact, etc. The mechanism of the photocatalytic action of several non-metallic dopants of titanium dioxide and composites is a promising approach for the exploration of photocatalysis activity. The various selected synthesis methods for non-metallic-doped TiO2 have been reviewed in this study. Similarly, the effect of various conditions on the doping mode has been summarized in relation to several sorts of modified TiO2. Full article

With the rapid development of modern electrical and electronic applications, the demand for high-performance film capacitors is becoming increasingly urgent. The energy density of a capacitor is dependent on permittivity and breakdown strength. However, the development of polymer-based composites with both high permittivity (εr) and breakdown strength (Eb) remains a huge challenge. In this work, a strategy of doping synergistic dual-fillers with complementary functionalities into polymer is demonstrated, by which high εr and Eb are obtained simultaneously. Small-sized titania nanosheets (STNSs) with high εr and high-insulating boron nitride sheets coated with polydopamine on the surface (BN@PDA) were introduced into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to prepare a ternary composite. Remarkably, a PVDF-based composite with 1 wt% BN@PDA and 0.5 wt% STNSs (1 wt% PVDF/BN@PDA−STNSs) shows an excellent energy storage performance, including a high εr of ~13.9 at 1 Hz, a superior Eb of ~440 kV/mm, and a high discharged energy density Ue of ~12.1 J/cm3. Moreover, the simulation results confirm that BN@PDA sheets improve breakdown strength and STNSs boost polarization, which is consistent with the experimental results. This contribution provides a new design paradigm for energy storage dielectrics. Full article

Boron- and cerium-doped titania (Anatase) were prepared via sol-gel method. Phase composition and morphology were assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), BET, diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), and XPS. Photo-electrochemistry of these materials, deposited onto fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO), was investigated in acid and acid-containing methanol. The boron-doped sample showed the best opto-electronic properties among the investigated samples. On the other hand, the cerium-doped titania samples annihilate to a certain extent the titania surface states, however, photogenerated charge separation was limited, and certainly associated to surface Ce3+/Ce4+ species. The substitutional effect of boron ions for O sites and interstitial sites was confirmed by XRD and XPS analyses. Full article

Pure titanium dioxide TiO2 photocatalytic substrates exhibit antibacterial activity only when they are irradiated with ultraviolet light, which comprises high-energy wavelengths that damage all life. Impurity doping of TiO2-related materials enables visible light to stimulate photocatalytic activity, which enhances opportunities for TiO2 to be used as a disinfectant in living environments. Boron-doped TiO2 displays visible-light-responsive bactericidal properties. However, because boron-derived compounds also exert notable antibacterial effects, most reports did not clearly demonstrate the extent to which the bactericidal property of boron-doped TiO2 is contributed by visible-light-stimulated photocatalysis. In addition, TiO2 thin films have considerable potential for applications in equipment that requires sterilization; however, the antibacterial properties of boron-doped TiO2 thin films have been examined by only a few studies. We found that boron-doped TiO2 thin films displayed visible-light-driven antibacterial properties. Moreover, because boron compounds may have intrinsic antibacterial properties, using control groups maintained in the dark, we clearly demonstrated that visible light stimulated the photocatalysis of boron-doped TiO2 thin films but not the residue boron compounds display antibacterial property. The bactericidal effects induced by visible light are equally potent for the elimination of the model organism Escherichia coli and human pathogens, such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes. The antibacterial applications of boron-doped TiO2 thin films are described, and relevant perspectives discussed. Full article
