To systematically elucidate the chronological patterns of embryonic development and morphological changes in the larval and juvenile stages of Silurus glanis, and provide fundamental biological insights into this species, in this study, fertilized eggs were obtained through artificial spawning induction technology. After removing adhesiveness from fertilized eggs using trypsin, a detailed developmental study was conducted. The study systematically analyzed the chronological sequence of embryonic development and the morphological change patterns of larval and juvenile fish. The results showed the following: The fertilized eggs of S. glanis are yellow, spherical, and sticky, and the stickiness allows eggs to attach to spawning substrates, enhancing hatching success. The egg diameter after water absorption was (2.88 ± 0.13) mm. The embryonic development took 47 h and 55 min, with a total accumulated temperature of 1245.56 h degrees Celsius, the developmental process includes seven stages and twenty-six periods, namely the zygophase stage, cleavage stage, blastula stage, gastrula stage, neurula stage, organogenesis stage, and hatching stage. At a temperature of (26.0 ± 0.9) °C, the hatched individuals went through the pre-yolk sac larval stage, late larval stage, juvenile fry stage, and juvenile stage. In the pre-yolk sac larval stage, otoliths appeared in the bilateral otic vesicles, a pair of barbel primordia emerged under the mandible, a short and thin straight intestine formed in the abdominal cavity, and the oral fissure first appeared. In the late larval stage, the fin rays were initially formed, the intestine became thicker and longer, the oral fissure, anus, and cloaca were formed, and the larvae could float and start feeding on exogenous food. In the juvenile fry stage, the differentiation of various organs was basically complete, the nostrils became larger, and both the anal fin and caudal fin had dark black markings. In the juvenile stage, the maxillary barbels elongated, the mucus layer thickened on the body and back, the abdomen is light white, and it had the external morphological characteristics of an adult fish. By measuring and calculating the total length, body length, body height, and head length of S. glanis larvae and juveniles (0–40 days), the results showed that the growth characteristics conformed to the following fish growth formula: TL = 0.0141x2 + 0.8096x + 8.2421 (R2 = 0.9916), where x denotes days after hatching. This study has preliminarily mastered the chronological patterns of the embryonic development, growth, and formation of the morphological characteristics in larval and juvenile S. glanis, providing scientific data and laying a theoretical foundation for the division of early developmental stages, reproduction, hatching, and fry cultivation. Background/Objectives: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of visual impairment in older adults and often coexists with cataracts. The indication of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) in these patients remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical performance of a non-diffractive extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL (LuxSmart™) compared to a monofocal plus IOL (Tecnis Eyhance™) in cataract patients with early-stage dry AMD. Methods: In this prospective observational study, 41 patients with early-stage AMD underwent bilateral cataract surgery with either LuxSmart™ or Tecnis Eyhance™ IOL implantation, targeting postoperative emmetropia. The eye selected for analysis was the first eye scheduled for surgery. Preoperative and postoperative evaluations included high and low-contrast distance visual acuity, intermediate and near visual acuity, defocus curves, ocular light scatter (halometry), and quality of life assessment (NEI VFQ-25). Postoperative biometric accuracy and refractive outcomes were also analyzed. Results: Both IOLs showed high refractive accuracy, with 100% of eyes within ±0.50 D of target. Postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity was 0.10 ± 0.06 LogMAR for Eyhance and 0.07 ± 0.02 for LuxSmart (p = 0.06). Low contrast VA at 20% was 0.22 ± 0.11 (Eyhance) and 0.26 ± 0.16 (LuxSmart) (p = 0.49). Depth of focus was approximately 1.75 D for both lenses. Light scatter (LDI) improved postoperatively in both groups with no significant differences (p = 0.54). VFQ-25 scores showed improvement in daily activities, though no changes were observed in driving or mental health domains. High-Performance Automated Detection of Sheep Binocular Eye Temperatures and Their Correlation with Rectal Temperature

Although rectal temperature is reliable, its measurement requires manual handling and causes stress to animals. IRT provides a non-contact alternative but often ignores bilateral eye temperature differences. This study presents an E-S-YOLO11n model for the automated detection of the binocular regions of sheep, which achieves remarkable performance with a precision of 98.2%, recall of 98.5%, mAP@0.5 of 99.40%, F1 score of 98.35%, FPS of 322.58 frame/s, parameters of 7.27 M, model size of 3.97 MB, and GFLOPs of 1.38. Right and left eye temperatures exhibit a strong correlation (r = 0.8076, p < 0.0001), However, the eye temperatures show only very weak correlation with rectal temperature (right eye: r = 0.0852; left eye: r = −0.0359), and neither figure reaches statistical significance. Rectal temperature is 7.37% and 7.69% higher than the right and left eye temperatures, respectively. Additionally, the right eye temperature is slightly higher than the left eye (p < 0.01). The study demonstrates the feasibility of combining IRT and deep learning for non-invasive eye temperature monitoring, although environmental factors may limit it as a proxy for rectal temperature. These results support the development of efficient thermal monitoring tools for precision animal husbandry. Full article

Background/Objectives: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) significantly affects quality of life and poses substantial treatment challenges in patients with severe comorbidities that contraindicate total knee arthroplasty. Transarterial periarticular embolization (TAE) has developed as a minimally invasive alternative targeting pathological periarticular hypervascularity. Bilateral embolization in a single session has not yet been clearly documented. This case report describes the application of bilateral genicular artery embolization using bioresorbable gelatin microspheres. Case report: A 68-year-old male patient with severe bilateral knee OA and multiple cardiovascular comorbidities underwent simultaneous bilateral TAE using Nexsphere-F microspheres (100–300 µm). Embolization targeted hypervascular genicular branches identified through digital subtraction angiography preserving normal capsular and osseous perfusion. Results: At one-month follow-up, the patient’s pain score decreased dramatically (VAS from 8/10 to 2/10), accompanied by marked functional improvement (WOMAC score: from 64 to 84; KOOS score: from 49 to 72). No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred and the patient required no analgesics post-procedure. Conclusions: Bilateral, same-session genicular artery embolization using bioresorbable gelatin microspheres provided short-term clinical benefits in a patient with advanced knee OA contraindicated for surgery. Background/Objectives: Laparoscopic appendectomy (LsA) is a standard acute surgical procedure typically performed under general anesthesia (GA). However, GA is associated with side effects such as hemodynamic instability and postoperative nausea/vomiting. Regional anesthesia (RA) has gained attention as an effective alternative in such surgeries, as it reduces surgical stress responses, provides adequate postoperative analgesia, and promotes early mobilization. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the combined use of spinal anesthesia (SA) and transversus abdominis plane block (TAPB) in LsA procedures. Methods: This retrospective observational study included 220 patients who underwent LsA between 2020 and 2023. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 (n = 110) received bilateral TAPB, and Group 2 (n = 110) received unilateral TAPB, both under SA. Postoperative pain was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and outcomes such as time to first analgesic requirement, analgesic consumption, and patient satisfaction were recorded. Results: This study evaluated the effects of SA combined with TAPB in LsA. Bilateral TAPB significantly prolonged the time to first analgesic request (13.7 vs. 12.1 h; p = 0.001) and reduced analgesic requirements (p = 0.008) compared to unilateral TAPB. VAS scores were significantly lower in Group 1 at the 9th and 12th hours postoperatively (p = 0.003 and p = 0.039). Although overall satisfaction scores were similar, a higher proportion of patients in Group 1 reported being “very satisfied” or “excellent” (55.5% vs. 42.7%). Conclusions: The combination of spinal anesthesia and bilateral TAPB is a safe and effective anesthetic strategy for LsA. Compared to unilateral TAPB, it offers superior postoperative analgesia and improved patient satisfaction. Full article

Background and Objectives: Long-standing or protracted temporomandibular joint dislocation refers to a condition that persists for more than 1 month without reduction. To elucidate the clinical characteristics and treatment results of this condition, this comprehensive review analyzed the available data. Materials and Methods: Studies were assessed using electronic medical databases and manual searches from their inception to 31 December 2024. Results: Overall, 229 cases (139 women and 81 men; mean age, 52.3 years) from 113 reports were assessed. The proportion of patients with bilateral and unilateral dislocations was 74.7% and 8.7%, respectively. The mean duration since dislocation was 11.9 months. Closed and open reductions were possible in 49 (21.4%) and 175 patients (76.4%), respectively. The mean dislocation duration was significantly (p = 0.001) shorter in patients who underwent closed reduction (4.9 months) than in those who underwent open reduction (14.8 months). Conclusions: Clinically, it is crucial to diagnose and treat this condition early to prevent it from becoming chronic. However, for cases of long-standing dislocations due to other more serious diseases, conservative treatments such as manual reduction and continuous elastic traction should be attempted first. If reduction fails, surgical treatment should be performed as an alternative. Full article

Background: The incidence of chemical ocular trauma after accidentally instilling the “wrong” eyedrops is still frequent, but cases resulting from stamper ink refills are rare. Case Presentation: A 73-year-old man presented to our emergency department with a history of inadvertently instilling stamper ink refill into both eyes (BEs) instead of artificial tears. Immediate irrigation and evaluation were performed. The initial visual acuity (VA) was 0.4 in the right eye (RE) and 0.8 in the left eye (LE). Slit lamp examination showed edema palpebra with periocular blue staining in BEs, chemotic conjunctiva with a much darker color in the RE than the LE, and epithelial defects with a positive fluorescein test in BEs. A diagnosis of bilateral corneal abrasion and chemotic conjunctiva was established. Ten hours after the emergency visit, RE VA decreased to 0.2, and corneal edema was found during the follow-up examination. Medications including levofloxacin antibiotic, sodium hyaluronate, sodium chloride, combined polymyxin sulfate–neomycin sulfate and dexamethasone eyedrops, mefenamic acid, and ascorbic acid tablets were prescribed. The RE corneal edema still occurred, and the endothelial cell count was 1952 and 987 cells/mm2 in the RE and LE at the one-week follow-up. After three weeks, corneal edema had fully resolved, and the VA was 0.4 and 0.8 in the RE and LE, respectively. Conclusions: This case report adds to the spectrum of the continuing problem of chemical ocular trauma after mistakenly instilling the eyedrops. Promoting and changing to different packages for non-ophthalmic products in plastic bottles mimicking eyedroppers is essential to minimize these injuries. Full article

Background: Scedosporium apiospermum is a filamentous fungus increasingly recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised hosts, though rare infections in immunocompetent individuals with structural lung disease have been reported. Its diagnosis and management remain challenging due to non-specific clinical presentation and intrinsic resistance to multiple antifungal agents. Case Presentation: We report the case of a 66-year-old immunocompetent woman with idiopathic bilateral non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, who presented with subacute cough and increased sputum production. Chest high-resolution CT revealed new subsolid and ground-glass infiltrates superimposed on stable bronchiectatic changes. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cultures isolated S. apiospermum as the sole pathogen. The patient was treated with oral voriconazole (200 mg BID) for 4 weeks, followed by a 4-week course of aerosolized amphotericin B. Clinical and radiological improvement was observed, and no relapse occurred during follow-up. Discussion: This case highlights the potential for S. apiospermum to cause clinically relevant pulmonary infection in structurally abnormal but immunocompetent lungs. Non-CF bronchiectasis may facilitate fungal colonization due to impaired mucociliary clearance and chronic mucus retention. Combined antifungal therapy involving systemic voriconazole and inhaled amphotericin B (though not yet standardized) was employed based on clinical rationale and the available literature, resulting in favorable outcomes. Conclusions:S. apiospermum pulmonary infection, although rare in immunocompetent hosts with bronchiectasis, should be considered in cases of new or persistent infiltrates. Early recognition and individualized antifungal strategies, including the potential role of inhaled agents, may improve clinical outcomes. This case reinforces the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in the management of complex fungal infections in chronic airway disease. Full article

Background: Handgrip strength asymmetry is a critical yet underexplored basketball component. While the digit ratio (2D:4D) is linked to strength, its interplay with age, body composition, and biomechanics is unclear. This study aimed to quantify these independent and interactive effects on asymmetry in female basketball players. Methods: Maximum handgrip strength was measured bilaterally in three arm postures in 26 adolescent and adult players. Linear Mixed Model with a random intercept tested the effects. Results: Omnibus tests revealed no statistically significant main effects or interactions for age group, lean body mass (LBM), or 2D:4D ratio. However, a planned contrast showed that asymmetry was significantly lower in an overhead arm posture compared to an extended arm posture (p = 0.035). A simulation-based power analysis determined the study was significantly underpowered (11.5%) to detect small-to-medium interaction effects. Conclusions: While biomechanical position subtly modulates strength asymmetry, the influence of age, lean mass, and digit ratio may be negligible or require substantially larger samples to detect. Individual differences, which accounted for 57% of the variance, appear to be the dominant drivers of handgrip asymmetry in this athletic cohort, highlighting the complexity of strength imbalances and the critical need for adequately powered research in this domain. Objectives: This study examined how differential basic resistive skills training influences basketball players’ physical performance. Methods: Seventeen young male athletes completed two weekly sessions of bodyweight strength exercises based on movement variability for 6 weeks. Countermovement jump (CMJ), sprinting, and change of direction (COD) tests were used to evaluate performance before and after the intervention and after a retention phase. Based on previous research, the experimental group followed a differential strength training protocol incorporating movement fluctuations to promote adaptability alongside basketball training. The control group only engaged in standard basketball training. Results: Bayesian analysis showed moderate improvements in sprint performance (0–20 m and 10–20 m sprinting times) for the experimental group, though these gains were not sustained during the retention phase. Slight, non-significant increases in CMJ left leg height were observed, and no significant differences were found in COD performance. Conclusions: The findings suggest that differential strength training may enhance sprint performance and adaptability in young athletes. However, the findings suggest that modifications to the training protocol, such as increasing training volume (e.g., from one set to three sets of 10 repetitions) or incorporating external resistance (e.g., medicine balls, kettlebells, and barbells), may further optimize performance outcomes. This study highlights the potential of differential training methods to address the multidirectional and dynamic demands of youth basketball. Future research should explore refined protocols and their long-term impact on athletic performance and retention. Full article

Green hydrogen is gaining global attention as a zero-carbon energy carrier with the potential to drive sustainable energy transitions, particularly in regions facing rising fossil fuel costs and resource depletion. In sub-Saharan Africa, financing mechanisms and structured off-take agreements are critical to attracting investment across the green hydrogen value chain, from advisory and pilot stages to full-scale deployment. While substantial funding is required to support a green economic transition, success will depend on the effective mobilization of capital through smart public policies and innovative financial instruments. This review evaluates financing mechanisms relevant to sub-Saharan Africa, including green bonds, public–private partnerships, foreign direct investment, venture capital, grants and loans, multilateral and bilateral funding, and government subsidies. Despite their potential, current capital flows remain insufficient and must be significantly scaled up to meet green energy transition targets. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, drawing on primary data from utility firms under the H2Atlas-Africa project and secondary data from international organizations and the peer-reviewed literature. The analysis identifies that transitioning toward Net-Zero emissions economies through hydrogen development in sub-Saharan Africa presents both significant opportunities and measurable risks. Specifically, the results indicate an estimated investment risk factor of 35%, reflecting potential challenges such as financing, infrastructure, and policy readiness. Nevertheless, the findings underscore that green hydrogen is a viable alternative to fossil fuels in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly if supported by targeted financing strategies and robust policy frameworks. This study offers practical insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and development partners seeking to structure bankable projects and accelerate green hydrogen adoption across the region. Background/Objectives: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent condition with many cases remaining undiagnosed, although early detection is essential. Adipose tissue distribution—particularly perirenal fat thickness (PrFT)—has recently been linked to renal pathophysiology. This study assessed the association between CT-derived parameters of fat distribution and kidney morphology with CKD. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 237 patients (117 subjects, 120 controls) who underwent abdominal CT and had serum creatinine data. The dataset was randomly split (70% training, 30% test) to develop and evaluate a logistic regression model. CKD was defined as estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. PrFT was measured as the distance from the posterior renal capsule to the posterior abdominal wall; renal hilum fat was segmented using a −195 to −45 HU range. Additional parameters (measured using automated segmentation tools) included kidney volume (KV), visceral/subcutaneous fat areas, skeletal muscle area and attenuation, and liver attenuation. Bilateral measurements were averaged. Results: KV (OR = 0.249, 95% CI: 0.146–0.422, p < 0.001) and PrFT (2nd tercile: OR = 7.720, 95% CI: 2.860–20.839; 3rd tercile: OR = 16.892, 95% CI: 5.727–49.822; both p < 0.001) were identified as independent predictors of CKD. These variables were used to construct a simplified model, which demonstrated moderate clinical applicability (AUC = 0.894) when evaluated on the test subset. Conclusions: KV and PrFT emerged as independent predictors of CKD, forming the basis of a simplified model with potential for opportunistic clinical application. This approach may facilitate earlier detection of CKD in patients undergoing CT imaging for unrelated clinical reasons. These imaging parameters are not intended to replace serum creatinine or eGFR but may serve as complementary predictors in specific clinical contexts. Full article

Purpose: To evaluate the efficiency and safety of high-fluidics ultrasound emulsification using slim-shaft-strong-bevel (SSSB) tip technology for nucleus workup through mini- and micro-incisions. Materials and Methods: 77 patients underwent immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery using high-flow-high-vacuum easyTip®2.2 (“eT2.2”) or infusion-assisted (“Hybrid”) easyTip®COMICS (“eT1.6 iaCOMICS”) coaxial phacoemulsification. Surgical time (ST), Effective Phacoemulsification Time (EPT), and fluid consumption (FC), central corneal thickness (CCT), and endothelial cell count (ECC) were recorded. Results: 50 patients completed the 6 months follow-up. Preoperatively, groups did not differ in nuclear hardness, CCT, or ECC. The median ST for Conquer with eT2.2 phaco was 49 s, with eT1.6 iaCOMICS phaco 57 s (p = 0.021). The median total EPT was 8.3 and 8.0 (p = 0.882), and the median EPT for Conquer was 4.0 and 4.1, respectively (p = 0.812). The median FC for Conquer was 21 mL with the eT2.2 and 22 mL with the eT1.6 iaCOMICS phaco (p = 0.29), and the overall FC was 29 mL and 33 mL, respectively (p = 0.105). Mean CCT was 561 ± 42 µm and 563 ± 45 µm on day 1 (p = 0.835), 539 ± 33 µm and 542 ± 34 µm at 1 week (p = 0.714), and 536 ± 31 µm and 541 ± 33 µm at 6 months (p = 0.55), respectively. Mean ECL at 6 months was 2.80 ± 7.28% and 3.41 ± 8.25% (p = 0.725). Conclusions: When compared to previously published results obtained with a standard non-waisted phaco needle and lower fluidics and with the waisted easyTip®2.2 run with intermediate fluidics, ultrasound-assisted high-fluidics phacoaspiration with the easyTip®2.2 through a 2.2 mm incision and the easyTip® COMICS through a 1.6 mm incision with infusion-assistance significantly improved efficiency of nucleus workup by reducing ultrasound energy and infusion fluid consumption, with minimal transient corneal stroma swelling and low endothelial cell loss. Zygotic genome activation (ZGA) represents one of the most vulnerable periods to environmental perturbations. The objective of this study was to investigate the formation of stress granules in mouse embryos in response to temperature reduction during ZGA, preimplantation embryo mortality, and long-term phenotypic outcomes. These outcomes included the evaluation of expression noise in bilateral right/left limbs of offspring as an indicator of developmental instability, behavioral deviation, hippocampal volume, and metabolomics profiling in adult offspring. Exposure to hypothermia during ZGA was associated with an increased number and inter-blastomere variability of stress granules, extended duration of the second embryonic division, and elevated embryonic mortality during the second and third cleavage stages. The embryonic response to hypothermic stress correlated with phenotypic traits indicative of increased pathology risk. Expression noise, serving as an indicator of developmental instability, was reduced in adult offspring derived from two-cell embryos incubated at 35 °C compared to those at 37 °C, while showing no significant difference relative to the control group. These results suggest that embryos surviving hypothermic exposure (35 °C) possess enhanced resilience to the adverse effects commonly associated with embryo transfer procedures. Furthermore, increased hippocampal volume and augmented auditory startle reflex observed in offspring that endured hypothermia during ZGA imply reduced risks of cognitive-related pathologies and reduced risks of pathologies associated with cognitive functions. Evidence supporting the clinical use of neuroprotective drugs for cerebral ischemia remains limited. Spatial and temporal disorientation, along with cognitive dysfunction, are among the most prominent long-term consequences of hippocampal neurodegeneration following cerebral ischemia. Cannabigerol (CBG), a non-psychotomimetic constituent of Cannabis sativa, has demonstrated neuroprotective effects in experimental models of cerebral injury. This study investigated the neuroprotective mechanisms of CBG in mitigating memory impairments caused by transient global cerebral ischemia in C57BL/6 mice using the bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) model. Mice underwent sham or BCCAO surgeries and received intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of either a vehicle or CBG (1, 5, or 10 mg/Kg), starting 1 h post-surgery and continuing daily for 7 days. Spatial memory performance and depression-like behaviors were assessed using the object location test (OLT) and tail suspension test (TST), respectively. Additional analyses examined neuronal degeneration, neuroinflammation, and neuronal plasticity markers in the hippocampus. CBG attenuated ischemia-induced memory deficits, reduced neuronal loss in the hippocampus, and enhanced neuronal plasticity. These findings suggest that CBG’s neuroprotective effects against BCCAO-induced memory impairments may be mediated by reductions in neuroinflammation and modifications in neuroplasticity within the hippocampus.
