Recovery Following a Drought-Induced Population Decline in an Exudivorous Forest Mammal

The likely increase in the frequency and severity of droughts with climate warming will pose an enormous challenge for the conservation of forest biodiversity. Documenting the response of species to recent droughts can inform future conservation actions. Mammals that breed and mature slowly may be especially vulnerable to drought-induced disruption to breeding. The yellow-bellied glider (Petaurus australis, Shaw) is a threatened low-density, arboreal marsupial of eastern Australia. Following a severe drought in 2019, one population had declined by 48% by 2021. The present study investigated whether this population had recovered 3–4 years (2022 and 2023) after that drought. Audio surveys of this highly vocal species were conducted at 42 sites, sampling > 1000 h per year, and producing recordings of 2038–2856 call sequences. The probability of occupancy varied little across the two survey years (0.92–0.97). Local abundance in 2023 had returned to pre-drought levels (45% of occupied sites had ≥3 individuals compared to 6% in 2021). These findings show a recovery from a drought-induced decline required at least 3 years, in keeping with the slow life history traits of this species. This study highlights the importance of considering a species’ life history strategy when evaluating its sensitivity to drought. Full article

While previous studies have explored the use of digital technologies in cultural heritage site reconstruction, limited attention has been given to systems that simultaneously support cultural restoration and psychological healing. This study investigates how multimodal, deep learning–assisted digital technologies can aid displaced populations by enabling both digital reconstruction and trauma relief within virtual environments. A demonstrative virtual reconstruction workflow was developed using the Great Mosque of Aleppo in Damascus as a case study. High-precision three-dimensional models were generated using Neural Radiance Fields, while Stable Diffusion was applied for texture style transfer and localized structural refinement. To enhance immersion, Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoder–based audio reconstruction was used to embed personalized ambient soundscapes into the virtual space. To evaluate the system’s effectiveness, interviews, tests, and surveys were conducted with 20 refugees aged 18–50 years, using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised and the System Usability Scale as assessment tools. The results showed that the proposed approach improved the quality of digital heritage reconstruction and contributed to psychological well-being, offering a novel framework for integrating cultural memory and emotional support in post-disaster contexts. This research provides theoretical and practical insights for future efforts in combining cultural preservation and psychosocial recovery. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the role of urban parks as green spaces in mitigating social isolation and supporting public mental health. Research in this area is limited due to the lack of large-scale datasets. Moreover, timely studies are indeed necessary under pandemic conditions. This study employs quantitative methods to analyze the temporal and spatial changes in social interaction in 160 urban parks before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and assesses their correlation with the built environment. Social media data from the Dianping platform were collected for this purpose. A two-step analytical approach was employed: first, machine learning-based keyword analysis identified review data related to social interaction, leading to the construction of two indicators: social interaction intensity and social interaction recovery rate. Second, we applied regression models to explore the correlation between the two indicators in urban parks and 18 characteristics of the built environment. The built environment characteristics associated with social interaction intensity varied across different periods, with seven factors, including natural landscapes, perceptual experience, building density, and road intersections, showing significant correlations with the recovery of social interaction capabilities in the post-pandemic era. Based on these findings, it is recommended that urban planners consider integrating more flexible design element, such as adding greenery and enriching the audio-visual experience for visitors. Furthermore, enhancing the quality and accessibility of park amenities can foster social interaction, thereby contributing to public health resilience in future crises. This research recommends that urban park design should not only support communities’ immediate needs but also prepare for unforeseen challenges. Full article

Touch, particularly affective touch mediated by C-tactile fibers, plays a key role in emotional regulation and therapeutic interventions. However, tactile stimulation is underutilized in sensory stimulation (SS) protocols for brain injury patients, despite its potential to enhance consciousness and promote recovery through neural and autonomic regulation. Tools like the Neurowave enable advanced multisensory stimulation, including audio-visual and emotional inputs, but lack tactile components. Integrating gentle touch stimulation with such systems could further enhance neuroplasticity, improve heart rate regulation, and support recovery in patients with disorders of consciousness. In this study, twenty patients affected by minimally conscious state (MCS) were divided into two groups: an experimental group (EG n.10) and a control group (CG n.10). Both groups underwent standard neurorehabilitation, including conventional physiotherapy and speech therapy. The key difference was in the type of sensory stimulation. The EG received advanced sensory stimulation with the Neurowave system (which provides audio-visual and emotional sensory stimulation) in addition to gentle touch stimulation. The CG received conventional sensory stimulation without the Neurowave and neutral gentle touch stimulation. Each patient was evaluated by a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, using clinical scales such as coma recovery scale—revised (CSR-R), level of cognitive functioning (LCF), before (T0) and after (T1) treatment. Additionally, heart rate (HR) and neurophysiological outcomes (P300) were also recorded for both groups (EG and CG). The MANOVA model revealed a significant interaction effect between group and phase on P300 latency (F (1, 18) = 10.23, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.09), indicating that the intervention involving gentle touch stimulation significantly influenced the P300 latency in the EG. The findings of this study contribute to our understanding of the therapeutic potential of emotional multisensory stimulation, which also includes gentle touch stimulation, in MCS rehabilitation. By demonstrating significant effects on both neurophysiological and functional measures, our results support the integration of tactile interventions into comprehensive neurorehabilitation programs. Background: Sleep quality is crucial for patient recovery and well-being, yet hospitalized patients often suffer from poor sleep due to environmental disruptions, clinical routines, and psychosocial stressors. While these challenges are well-documented, qualitative insights into nurses’ perspectives—essential frontline providers shaping the sleep environment—are scarce, especially within rapidly evolving healthcare systems like Saudi Arabia’s. This study explores nurses’ perceptions of factors influencing patient sleep quality in a private hospital in Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, and identifies strategies for improvement. Methods: We conducted a qualitative, cross-sectional study using semi-structured interviews with 14 registered nurses from diverse nationalities, specialties (Obstetrics/Gynecology, Medical-Surgical, Pediatrics, Intensive Care, Orthopedics, Bariatrics), and experience levels. Interviews were conducted in Arabic or English, audio-recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed using ATLAS.ti software. Roy’s Adaptation Model guided the examination of environmental, patient-specific, and systemic factors affecting sleep. Findings: Four primary themes emerged: (1). Environmental Factors: noise from alarms, equipment, family presence, and late-night activities, along with abrupt lighting changes, consistently disrupted sleep. (2). Patient-Specific Factors: pain, emotional distress, cultural expectations, and family involvement influenced sleep experiences. (3). Systemic and Contextual Factors: language barriers, infrastructural disparities between private and governmental hospitals, and limited resources can impeded effective sleep-promoting strategies. (4). Role of Health Technology: nurses recognized the potential of innovations like smart lighting and wearable monitors to enhance sleep quality but faced challenges in implementation due to knowledge gaps and limited familiarity. Roy’s Adaptation Model highlighted how effective adaptation through physiological and cognitive–emotional pathways, as observed by nurses, was facilitated or hindered by these factors. Conclusions: Enhancing in-hospital sleep quality requires a holistic, culturally sensitive approach that integrates environmental modifications, patient-centered care, and systemic improvements. Strategic investments in staff communication training, infrastructural upgrades, language support services, and the adoption of health technologies can promote adaptive responses and optimize patient rest. By leveraging theory-driven insights and context-specific strategies, healthcare systems—particularly those undergoing rapid development—can better support nurses in fostering restorative sleep environments as a fundamental component of patient-centered care, thereby enhancing patient recovery, satisfaction, and overall well-being. People working and studying indoors for a long time can easily experience mental fatigue and stress. Virtual natural elements introduced into indoor environments can stimulate the human visual and auditory senses, thus relieving psychological stress. In this study, stress induction was achieved through noise playback, and the recovery effects on psychological stress of three set indoor environments, visual, auditory, and audio-visual, were investigated through changes in subjects’ facial expressions, electromyographic (EMG) signals, and subjective questionnaires. The experiment found that after stress induction through noise, the participants’ stress levels changed significantly. At this time, the subject scored low on the questionnaire, with electromyography readings higher than usual, and micro-expression recognition indicated negative emotions. After the restoration effects under the three working conditions of visual, auditory, and audio-visual combination, the average EMG values during the recovery period decreased from the baseline period (10 min after the subject acclimated to the environment), respectively. The results indicate that all three restoration conditions have the effect of relieving psychological stress, with the stress recovery effects of auditory and audio-visual conditions being superior to visual conditions. This study is of great significance for creating comfortable indoor environments and minimizing psychological pressure on indoor office workers. Full article

The restoration of fine motor function in the hand is crucial for stroke survivors with hemiplegia to reintegrate into daily life and presents a significant challenge in post-stroke rehabilitation. Current mirror rehabilitation systems based on wearable devices require medical professionals or caregivers to assist patients in donning sensor gloves on the healthy side, thus hindering autonomous training, increasing labor costs, and imposing psychological burdens on patients. This study developed a low-load wearable hand function mirror rehabilitation robotic system based on visual gesture recognition. The system incorporates an active visual apparatus capable of adjusting its position and viewpoint autonomously, enabling the subtle monitoring of the healthy side’s gesture throughout the rehabilitation process. Consequently, patients only need to wear the device on their impaired hand to complete the mirror training, facilitating independent rehabilitation exercises. An algorithm based on hand key point gesture recognition was developed, which is capable of automatically identifying eight distinct gestures. Additionally, the system supports remote audio–video interaction during training sessions, addressing the lack of professional guidance in independent rehabilitation. A prototype of the system was constructed, a dataset for hand gesture recognition was collected, and the system’s performance as well as functionality were rigorously tested. The results indicate that the gesture recognition accuracy exceeds 90% under ten-fold cross-validation. The system enables operators to independently complete hand rehabilitation training, while the active visual system accommodates a patient’s rehabilitation needs across different postures. This study explores methods for autonomous hand function rehabilitation training, thereby offering valuable insights for future research on hand function recovery. Full article

In recent years, the poultry breeding industry has been converted into a large-scale, intensive, and intelligent production mode. The Internet of Things (IoT) is under rapid development, which promotes the development of precision livestock farming. In this study, we developed an intelligent service platform for a facility environment based on the IoT structure, utilizing the capabilities of Platform as a Service (PaaS). The platform consists of four layers, including an information perception layer, network layer, management service layer, and application layer. By using the cloud service model with a distributed network architecture, asynchronous data transmission, and a distributed file system, the platform can centrally manage multiple farm’s data. The intelligent service platform includes the following functions: displaying environmental data, water and electricity consumption, data analysis, and managing production data. Over a 500-day trial period in a live poultry house, the platform demonstrated high data integrity (>87%) and resilience against network disruptions and power outages. The data validity of each environmental element exceeded 94%, among which the validity of the temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide concentration exceeded 99%. The overall accuracy of the dataset remained relatively high, providing a robust data foundation for further research. Key features included audio analysis, environmental monitoring, and production data management. The platform’s operational status was efficiently communicated via data statistics and email alerts, facilitating timely system recovery. The demonstrated modules included sound recognition, psychrometric charts for visual alerts, and financial analysis tools, offering versatile solutions for integrating PLF models and advanced analytics. Urban forests are increasingly recognized as vital components of urban ecosystems, offering a plethora of physiological and psychological benefits to residents. However, the existing research has often focused on single dimensions of either visual or auditory experiences, overlooking the combined impact of audio–visual environments on public health and well-being. This study addresses this gap by examining the effects of composite audio–visual settings within three distinct types of urban forests in Fuzhou, China: mountain, mountain–water, and waterfront forests. Through field surveys and quantitative analysis at 24 sample sites, we assessed visual landscape elements, soundscapes, physiological indicators (e.g., heart rate, skin conductance), and psychological responses (e.g., spiritual vitality, stress relief, emotional arousal, attention recovery) among 77 participants. Our findings reveal that different forest types exert varying influences on visitors’ physiology and psychology, with waterfront forests generally promoting relaxation and mountain–water forests inducing a higher degree of tension. Specific audio–visual elements, such as plant, water scenes, and natural sounds, positively affect psychological restoration, whereas urban noise is associated with increased physiological stress indicators. In conclusion, the integrated effects of audio–visual landscapes significantly shape the multisensory experiences of the public in urban forests, underscoring the importance of optimal design that incorporates natural elements to create restorative environments beneficial to the health and well-being of urban residents. These insights not only contribute to the scientific understanding of urban forest impact but also inform the design and management of urban green spaces for enhanced public health outcomes. Multi-channel audio signals provide a better auditory sensation to the audience. However, missing data may occur in the collection, transmission, compression, or other processes of audio signals, resulting in audio quality degradation and affecting the auditory experience. As a result, the completeness of the audio signal has become a popular research topic in the field of signal processing. In this paper, the tensor nuclear norm is introduced into the audio signal completion algorithm, and the multi-channel audio signals with missing data are restored by using the completion algorithm based on the tensor nuclear norm. First of all, the multi-channel audio signals are preprocessed and are then transformed from the time domain to the frequency domain. Afterwards, the multi-channel audio with missing data is modeled to construct a third-order multi-channel audio tensor. In the next part, the tensor completion algorithm is used to complete the third-order tensor. The optimal solution of the convex optimization model of the tensor completion is obtained by using the convex relaxation technique and, ultimately, the data recovery of the multi-channel audio with data loss is accomplished. The experimental results of the tensor completion algorithm and the traditional matrix completion algorithm are compared using both objective and subjective indicators. The final result shows that the high-order tensor completion algorithm has a better completion ability and can restore the audio signal better. Full article

Binaural audio synthesis (BAS) aims to restore binaural audio from mono signals obtained from the environment to enhance users’ immersive experiences. It plays an essential role in building Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality environments. Existing deep neural network (DNN)-based BAS systems synthesize binaural audio by modeling the overall sound propagation processes from the source to the left and right ears, which encompass early decay, room reverberation, and head/ear-related filtering. However, this end-to-end modeling approach brings in the overfitting problem for BAS models when they are trained using a small and homogeneous data set. Moreover, existing losses cannot well supervise the training process. As a consequence, the accuracy of synthesized binaural audio is far from satisfactory on binaural differences. In this work, we propose a novel DNN-based BAS method, namely DIFFBAS, to improve the accuracy of synthesized binaural audio from the perspective of the interaural phase difference. Specifically, DIFFBAS is trained using the average signals of the left and right channels. To make the model learn the binaural differences, we propose a new loss named Interaural Phase Difference (IPD) loss to supervise the model training. Extensive experiments have been performed and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the DIFFBAS model and the IPD loss. Full article

(2) Method: Adult patients (≥18 years age) who consented to participate in the Community Pharmacy Hospital Discharge and Medicines Reconciliation Service were invited for an interview within 21 days of discharge from hospital. Qualitative, one-to-one, semi-structured patient interviews were conducted by telephone and audio-recorded using Microsoft Teams®. The interview audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and underwent thematic analysis. (3) Results: Twelve patients were interviewed, evenly split by sex and with a median age of 62 years (range 36 to 88 years). Our analysis generated main five themes: patient engagement, stakeholder communication, practical factors, human factors, and comparative experiences. Many of these were interdependent. (4) Conclusions: Patients appreciated that the service ensured a quicker discharge from hospital. Good stakeholder communication, practical factors (including choice, location, and the realities of obtaining their medication from the community pharmacy), and a pre-existing and trusted relationship in their usual community pharmacy were the key factors that regulated the patient experience. Generally, patients were positive about the introduction of this new service. However, the lack of a previous relationship or trust with a community pharmacy, and previous experiences with medication supply problems were factors which had the potential to negatively impact patient experiences. It is now well established that everyday interaction with nature has a restorative potential on the elderly population’s health and well-being. However, empirical evidence on the restorative effects of neighborhood greenspace is still lacking, and scant attention has been given to the cross-effect of the visual–audio experience. The present study examined the restorative effects of audio–visual interactions on older adults in typical residential public spaces in Chinese cities. A pretest–post-test design was used to measure changes in participants’ physiological responses, mood states, and mental restoration. Participants (mean age = 68.88 years) were asked to experience six simulated audio–visual conditions (3 scenes × 2 sounds) of residential public space. The results showed that: (1) A green scene combined with nature sounds showed the most restorative effect on the elderly participants’ psycho-physiological health. (2) Viewing green scenes facilitated the most psycho-physiological recovery for the elderly, followed by viewing the activity scene. (3) Compared to the traffic noise, adding nature sounds could promote many more benefits in HR recovery, positive mood promotion, and perceived restorative effects, and the advantage of nature sounds over traffic noise was mainly demonstrated in the green scene. (4) Visual scenes demonstrated a greater impact on the elderly participants’ psycho-physiological recovery than the sounds. Our findings suggested the necessity of providing residential nature and activity spaces, encompassing both sound and vision, to promote healthy aging in Chinese residential contexts. Full article

Background: COVID-19 infection can result in persistent symptoms, known as long COVID. Understanding the provider experience of service provision for people with long COVID symptoms is crucial for improving care quality and addressing potential challenges. Currently, there is limited knowledge about the provider experience of long COVID service delivery. Aim: To explore the provider experience of delivering health services to people living with long COVID at select primary, rehabilitation, and specialty care sites. Design and setting: This study employed qualitative description methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with frontline providers at primary care, rehabilitation, and specialty care sites across Alberta. Participants were interviewed between June and September 2022. Method: Interviews were conducted virtually over zoom, audio-recorded, and transcribed with consent. Iterative inductive qualitative content analysis of transcripts was employed. Relationships between emergent themes were examined for causality or reciprocity, then clustered into content areas and further abstracted into a priori categories through their interpretive joint meaning. Participants: A total of 15 participants across Alberta representing diverse health care disciplines were interviewed. Results: Main themes include: the importance of education for long COVID recognition; the role of symptom acknowledgement in patient-centred long COVID service delivery; the need to develop recovery expectations; and opportunities for improvement of navigation and wayfinding to long COVID services. Conclusions: Provider experience of delivering long COVID care can be used to inform patient-centred service delivery for persons with long COVID symptoms. Full article

Research on the Healing Potential of Urban Parks from the Perspective of Audio-Visual Integration: A Case Study of Five Urban Parks in Chengdu

In recent decades, rapid urbanization has been linked to negative impacts on people’s mental health. However, the healing potential of urban parks as central features of cityscapes has not been fully explored from the perspective of audio-visual integration. This gap limits designers’ ability to leverage parks’ healing systems to their full potential. To address this gap, this study used the Mindwave monitoring and recovery component scale to evaluate the healing function of urban parks in Chengdu, specifically focusing on audio-visual integration. Based on audio-visual scene combination samples collected through shooting and recording, we found that: (1) The visual and audio qualities of birdsong (the sky above the blue space and the green space) can significantly differ. (2) Birdsong and conversation seem to provide healing effects from seemingly contradictory dimensions of “quiet” and “social”, with gender differences as the primary influencing factor. (3) Visible children laughing at low levels (30% and 50%) has a more negative impact than invisible traffic noise at the same sound pressure level. (4) Audio-visual interaction does not always have a positive effect, with the visibility of the sound source as the primary influencing factor. (5) An increase in audio proportion did not necessarily correspond to a linear increase in the healing effect. Through exploring the influence of audio-visual combination scenes on healing effects in urban parks, this study provides an empirical basis for park design and planning that considers audio-visual healing effects. It offers insights into designing healing systems for parks and urban areas as well. Full article
