Background: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown consistent efficacy in individuals with psychosis, as supported by many trials. One classical distinction is that between affective and non-affective psychosis. Few studies have specifically examined the possible moderating role of substantial affective elements. In this systematic review and meta-regression analysis, we assess how CBT response differs across the affective spectrum in psychosis. Methods: We included studies assessing various CBT modalities, including third-wave therapies, administered in people with psychosis. The study protocol is published in the Open Science Framework. Meta-regression was conducted to assess whether the proportion of participants with affective psychosis (AP), as proxied by a documented diagnosis of schizoaffective (SZA) disorder, moderated CBT efficacy across positive, negative, and depressive symptom domains. Results: The literature search identified 4457 records, of which 39 studies were included. The median proportion of SZA disorder participants was 17%, with a total of 422 AP participants represented. Meta-regression showed a trend toward lower CBT efficacy for positive symptoms with a higher SZA disorder proportion (β = +0.10 SMD per 10% increase in AP; p = 0.12), though it was not statistically significant. No significant associations were found for negative (β = +0.05; p = 0.73) or depressive symptoms (β = −0.02; p = 0.78). Heterogeneity was substantial across all models (I2 ranging from 54% to 80%), and funnel plot asymmetry was observed in negative and depressive symptoms, indicating possible publication bias. Risk of bias assessment showed the anticipated inherent difficulty of psychotherapies in blinding and possibly dropout rates affecting some studies. Conclusions: Affective symptoms may reduce the effectiveness of CBT for positive symptoms in psychotic disorders, although the findings did not reach statistical significance. Other patient-level characteristics in psychosis could indicate which patients can benefit most from CBT modalities. Full article

Road networks are essential for access, resource distribution, and population evacuation during natural events. These challenges are pronounced in rural areas, where network redundancy is limited and communities may have social disparities. While traditional risk management systems often focus on the physical consequences of hazard events alone, specialized literature increasingly suggests the development of a more comprehensive approach for risk assessment, where not only physical aspects associated with infrastructure, such as damage level or disruptions, but also the social and economic attributes of the affected population are considered. Consequently, this paper proposes a Vulnerability Access Index (VAI) to support road network decision-making that integrates the social vulnerability of rural communities exposed to natural events, their accessibility to nearby critical infrastructure, and physical risk. The research methodology considers (i) the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) calculation based on socioeconomic variables, (ii) Importance Index estimation (Iimp) to evaluate access to critical infrastructure, (iii) VAI calculation combining SVI and Iimp, and (iv) application to a case study in the influence area of the Villarrica volcano in southern Chile. The results show that when incorporating social variables and accessibility, infrastructure criticality varies significantly compared to the infrastructure criticality assessment based solely on physical risk, modifying the decision-making regarding road infrastructure robustness and resilience improvements. The restrictions on business and social activity during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to significant changes in consumption patterns worldwide. Such changes are causing structural shifts in the markets of goods and services, thus affecting regional resilience. In this article, we aim to assess the changing structure of the consumption of goods and services in highly urbanized Russian regions under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and to analyze its effects on the lifestyle of the population. According to our results, some Russian regions demonstrate a return to previous consumption levels, while others exhibit the emergence of new dynamics. The conclusion is made that COVID restrictions have invoked a paradigm shift in consumer behavior toward investment in self-development, safety, and comfort. This observation should be taken into account when developing strategies for the recovery growth of regional economies. Full article

The carbon dioxide spillover effects and influencing factors of the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI) in African countries must be assessed to evaluate the effectiveness, promote low-carbon transmissions in African countries, and provide recommendations for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This novel study employs carbon dioxide emission intensity (CEI) and per capita carbon dioxide emissions (PCE) as dual indicators to evaluate the spatial spillover effects of 54 BRI African countries on their neighboring countries’ carbon emissions from 2007 to 2023. It identifies the key factors and mechanisms affecting these spillover effects using the spatial differences-in-differences (SDID) model. Results indicate that since the launch of the BRI, the CEI and PCE of BRI African countries have significantly increased, largely due to trade patterns and industrialization structures. Greater trade openness has further boosted local economic development, thereby increasing carbon dioxide’s spatial spillover. Government management and corruption control levels show some heterogeneity in the spillover effects, which may be attributed to long-standing issues of weak institutional enforcement in Africa. Overall, this study reveals the complex relationship between BRI African economic development and environmental outcomes, highlighting the importance of developing sustainable development strategies and establishing strong differentiated regulatory regimes to effectively address environmental challenges. Introduction: Lichen sclerosus (LSc) is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory skin disease that primarily affects the anogenital region in both sexes and across all age groups. Aim: To investigate the relationship between quality of life (QoL) and disease severity, as measured by a newly developed Lichen Sclerosus Score (LSc score), with respect to anatomical site before and after 12 weeks of treatment. Methods: A total of 136 patients diagnosed with LSc (88 men, 48 women) were enrolled between March and September 2022. Patients were clinically evaluated using the LSc score and completed the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Treatment was individualized based on clinical findings and history. At 12 weeks, both clinical assessment and DLQI were repeated. Results: LSc scores significantly decreased following treatment (p < 0.001), except in the female subgroup. In men, LSc scores were strongly correlated with DLQI scores both before (r = 0.709; p < 0.001) and after (r = 0.492; p < 0.001) treatment. Among women, a significant correlation was found only before treatment (r = 0.457; p < 0.001). Significant associations were identified between LSc score and DLQI items 1, 8, and 9 in men and the overall cohort. No statistically significant differences in LSc scores or DLQI were observed across anatomical sites after correction for multiple comparisons. Conclusions: Disease severity in genital LSc is closely associated with QoL impairment. This is, to our knowledge, the first study to examine the correlation between a clinical severity score and DLQI. While anatomical site did not significantly affect scores, certain sites may have a disproportionate impact, underscoring the complex ways in which LSc affects patients’ lives. Full article

Nano- and microplastic pollution, together with the ongoing rise in global temperatures driven by climate change, represent increasingly critical environmental challenges. Although these stressors often co-occur in the environment, their combined effects on plant systems remain largely unexplored. To test the hypothesis that their interaction may exacerbate the effects observed under each stressor individually, we investigated the response of seedlings of Triticum turgidum to treatments with fluorescent polystyrene nanoplastics under optimal (25 °C) and elevated (35 °C) temperature conditions. We evaluated seedling growth, photosynthetic pigment content, and oxidative stress markers using both biochemical and histochemical techniques. In addition, we assessed enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant responses. The use of fluorescently labeled nanoplastics enabled the visualization of their uptake and translocation within plant tissues. Elevated temperatures negatively affect plant growth, increasing the production of proline, a key protective molecule, and weakly activating secondary defense mechanisms. Nanoplastics disturbed wheat seedling physiology, with these effects being amplified under high temperature conditions. Combined stress enhances nanoplastic uptake in roots, increases oxidative damage, and alters antioxidant responses, reducing defense capacity in leaves while triggering compensatory mechanisms in roots. These findings underscore a concerning interaction between plastic pollution and climate warming in crop plants. Full article

Background/Objectives: Military Service Members (SMs) require optimal nutrition to support health, readiness, and job performance. However, they often fall short of meeting nutrition guidelines. This study aimed to determine the impact and feasibility of implementing the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) “Fueled to Fight®” (F2F) nutrition program in non-appropriated fund (NAF) food venues. Objectives included evaluating changes in Military Nutrition Environment Assessment Tool (mNEAT) scores, feasibility of implementing and maintaining F2F strategies, and influence on customer purchasing patterns. Methods: Researchers conducted a pre-post interventional study from January to December 2024 at three NAF food venues across two USMC bases. F2F strategies, including identifying items using a stoplight color coding system (Green = healthy, Yellow = less healthy, Red = least healthy), menu revisions, food placement, promotion, and marketing, were implemented. Data included mNEAT assessments, sales reports, and stakeholder focus groups. Generalized Estimating Equations models were used to analyze sales data. Results: mNEAT scores increased across all venues post-intervention. Availability and sales of Green items increased, while sales of Red items decreased in some venues. Profit increased at all three food venues. Focus groups revealed feasibility and provided insights for future interventions. Conclusions: F2F interventions in NAF food venues are feasible and can positively impact the food environment and customer purchasing patterns without negatively affecting profit. This study highlights the importance of integrating nutrition programs into all military food venues, not just government-funded dining facilities, to support the nutritional fitness and readiness of SMs. Full article

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), an enveloped single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus, poses a significant threat to global swine production. Despite the availability of modified live virus and inactivated vaccines, their limited efficacy and safety concerns highlight the urgent need for novel antiviral therapeutics. This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which lycopene inhibits PRRSV replication. Initial assessments confirmed that lycopene did not adversely affect cellular viability, cell cycle progression, or apoptosis. Using fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, immunoblotting, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and viral titration assays, lycopene was shown to exhibit potent antiviral activity against PRRSV. Mechanistic studies revealed that lycopene suppresses reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which is critical for PRRSV proliferation. Additionally, lycopene attenuated PRRSV-induced inflammatory responses, as demonstrated by immunoblotting, ELISA, and qRT-PCR assays. These findings suggest that lycopene inhibits PRRSV replication by modulating ROS levels and mitigating inflammation, offering a promising avenue for the development of antiviral therapeutics. This study provides new insights and strategies for combating PRRSV infections, emphasizing the potential of lycopene as a safe and effective antiviral agent. Full article

Granite formations provide suitable geological conditions for building gravity dams. However, the presence of intruding granite creates a fractured zone. The interaction of this fractured zone with structural planes and faults can create geological conditions that are unfavorable for the anti-sliding stability of gravity dams. This paper identifies the dominant structural planes that affect the anti-sliding stability of dams by studying the three-dimensional intersection relationships between groups of structural planes, faults, and fracture zones. The three-dimensional distribution and occurrence of the dominant structural planes directly impact the anti-sliding stability and sliding failure mode of gravity dams. Through comprehensive field investigations and systematic analysis of engineering geological data, the spatial distribution characteristics of structural planes and fracture zones were quantitatively characterized. Subsequently, the potential for deep-seated sliding failure of the gravity dam was rigorously evaluated and conclusively dismissed through application of the rigid body limit equilibrium method. It was established that the sliding mode of the foundation of the dam under this combination of structural planes is primarily shallow sliding. Additionally, based on the engineering geological data of the area around the dam, a three-dimensional finite element numerical model was developed to analyze stress–strain calculations under seepage stress coupling conditions and compared with calculations made without considering seepage stress coupling. The importance of seepage in the anti-sliding stability of the foundation of the dam was determined. The research findings provide engineering insights into enhancing the anti-sliding stability of gravity dams in granite distribution areas by (1) identifying critical structural planes and fracture zones that control sliding behavior, (2) demonstrating the necessity of seepage-stress coupling analysis in stability assessments, and (3) guiding targeted reinforcement measures to mitigate shallow sliding risks. Leishmaniasis, a vector-borne neglected tropical disease, affects over 6.2 million people globally. Case acquisition is increasingly recognized in the United States, and in Texas, most reported cases are locally acquired and speciated to Leishmania mexicana. We conducted a scoping literature review to systematically assess contemporary research on Leishmania in humans, animals, reservoir hosts, or vectors in Texas after 2000. Out of 22 eligible studies, the most prevalent themes were case reports, followed by studies on domestic animals, reservoirs, and vectors, with several studies bridging multiple disciplines. Climate change, urbanization, and habitat encroachment appear to be driving the northward expansion of L. mexicana, which is primarily attributed to shifts in the habitats of key vectors (Lutzomyia anthophora) and reservoirs (Neotoma spp.). Leishmania appears to be expanding into new areas, with potential for further spread. As ecological conditions evolve, strengthening surveillance and clinician awareness is crucial to understanding disease risk and improving early detection and treatment in affected communities. Antimicrobial and Anticancer Activities of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Probio87 Isolated from Human Breast Milk

Background/Objectives: This study evaluated the in vitro probiotic potential of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Probio87 (Probio87), focusing on its physiological robustness, safety, antimicrobial properties, and anticancer activity, with relevance to vaginal and cervical health. Methods: Tests included acid and bile salt tolerance, mucin adhesion, and carbohydrate utilization. Prebiotic preferences were assessed using FOS, GOS, and inulin. Antibiotic susceptibility was evaluated per EFSA standards. Antimicrobial activity of the cell-free supernatant (CFS) was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida species. Effects on Lactobacillus iners and L. crispatus were analyzed. Anticancer properties were assessed in HeLa, CaSki (HPV-positive), and C-33A (HPV-negative) cervical cancer cell lines through proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and cell cycle assays. Results: Probio87 showed strong acid and bile tolerance, efficient mucin adhesion, and broad carbohydrate utilization, favoring short-chain prebiotics like FOS and GOS over inulin. It met EFSA antibiotic safety standards. The CFS exhibited potent antimicrobial activity, including complete inhibition of Candida albicans. Probio87 selectively inhibited L. iners without affecting L. crispatus, indicating positive modulation of vaginal microbiota. In cervical cancer cells, the CFS significantly reduced proliferation and angiogenesis markers (p < 0.05), and induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in HPV-positive cells, with minimal effects on HPV-negative C-33A cells. Conclusions: Probio87 demonstrates strong probiotic potential, with safe, selective antimicrobial and anticancer effects. Its ability to modulate key microbial and cancer-related pathways supports its application in functional foods or therapeutic strategies for vaginal and cervical health. Full article

Background and Objectives: Spinopelvic alignment may affect the outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA), with pelvic version influencing the risk of mechanical complications occurring after surgery. On the other hand, THA surgery itself may contribute to the modification of pelvis version. The sacro-femoro-pubic (SFP) angle is measured on anteroposterior (AP) radiographs of the pelvis in a supine position, and is used to estimate pelvic tilt (PT), representative of pelvic version, which requires lateral views of the sacrum for its calculation; however, these X rays are not routinely performed in the preoperative setting of hip surgery. This study aims to analyze how THA determines changes in the pelvic version of operated patients; the SFP angle will be used to assess pelvic version on standard AP radiographs. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 182 consecutive patients undergoing THA for unilateral primary degenerative hip osteoarthritis (HOA-study group, n = 104) or femoral neck fracture (FNF-control group, n = 78) at the author’s institution. The SFP angle was measured on AP pelvic radiographs of the non-replaced hip preoperatively, postoperatively, and at the last follow-up. PT values were derived from SFP angles. Pre- and postoperative PT and its variations ΔPT were assessed. Study groups were compared in terms of native and postoperative variations of pelvic version. Results: The average absolute value of ΔPT was 2.99° ± 3.07° in the HOA group and 3.57° ± 2.92° in FNF group. There was no significant overall difference in preoperative or postoperative PT values between groups. In both groups, THA surgery led to a certain improvement, still not significant, in pelvic orientation, with FNF patients presenting a greater tendency toward retroversion. No significant differences in complication rates were found comparing patients with different pelvic orientations. Conclusions: THA can lead to a “normalization” of pelvic version in a certain number of patients with preoperative anteversion or retroversion. Although statistically non-significant, this observation may have clinical implications for spinopelvic balance and could support prioritizing THA in patients with concurrent spinal disease. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and to evaluate the long-term impact of THA on spinopelvic alignment. Full article

Harnessing Glutamicibacter sp. to Enhance Salinity Tolerance in the Obligate Halophyte Suaeda fruticosa

Salinization hinders the restoration of vegetation in salt-affected soils by negatively impacting plant growth and development. Halophytes play a key role in the restoration of saline and degraded lands due to unique features explaining their growth aptitude in such extreme ecosystems. Suaeda fruticosa is an euhalophyte well known for its medicinal properties and its potential for saline soil phytoremediation. However, excessive salt accumulation in soil limits the development of this species. Research findings increasingly advocate the use of extremophile rhizosphere bacteria as an effective approach to reclaim salinized soils, in conjunction with their salt-alleviating effect on plants. Here, a pot experiment was conducted to assess the role of a halotolerant plant growth-promoting actinobacterium, Glutamicibacter sp., on the growth, nutritional status, and shoot content of proline, total soluble carbohydrates, and phenolic compounds in the halophyte S. fruticosa grown for 60 d under high salinity (600 mM NaCl). Results showed that inoculation with Glutamicibacter sp. significantly promoted the growth of inoculated plants under stress conditions. More specifically, bacterial inoculation increased the shoot concentration of proline, total polyphenols, potassium (K+), nitrogen (N), and K+/Na+ ratio in shoots, while significantly decreasing Na+ concentrations. These mechanisms partly explain S. fruticosa tolerance to high saline concentrations. Our findings provide some mechanistic elements at the ecophysiological level, enabling a better understanding of the crucial role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) in enhancing halophyte growth and highlight their potential for utilization in restoring vegetation in salt-affected soils. Unveiling Radon Concentration in Geothermal Installation: The Role of Indoor Conditions and Human Activity

The naturally occurring radioactive gas radon presents a major public health danger mainly affecting people who spend time in poorly ventilated buildings. The periodic table includes radon as a noble gas which forms through uranium decay processes in soil, rock, and water. The accumulation of radon indoors in sealed or poorly ventilated areas leads to dangerous concentrations that elevate human health risks of lung cancer. The research examines environmental variables affecting radon concentration indoors by studying geothermal installations and their drilling activities, which potentially increase radon emissions. The study was conducted in the basement of the plumbing educational building at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki to assess the potential impact of geothermal activity on indoor radon levels, as the building is equipped with a geothermal heating system. The key findings based on 150 days of continuous data showed that radon levels peak during the cold days, where the concentration had a mean value of 41.5 Bq/m3 and reached a maximum at about 95 Bq/m3. The reason was first and foremost poor ventilation and pressure difference. The lowest concentrations were on days with increased human activity with measures that had a mean value of 14.8 Bq/m3, which is reduced by about 65%. The results that are presented confirm the hypotheses and the study is making clear that ventilation and human activity are crucial in radon mitigation, especially on geothermal and energy efficient structures. Floods are among the most devastating hydrometeorological natural disasters worldwide, causing massive infrastructure and economic loss in low-lying, flood-prone developing countries like Bangladesh. Effective disaster mitigation relies on organized and detailed flood damage information to facilitate emergency evacuation, coordinate relief distribution, and formulate an effective disaster management policy. Nevertheless, the nation confronts considerable obstacles due to insufficient historical flood damage data and the underdevelopment of near-real-time (NRT) flood monitoring systems. This study addresses this issue by developing a replicable methodology for flood damage assessment and NRT monitoring systems. Using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, we analyzed flood events from 2019 to 2023, integrating geospatial layers such as roads, cropland, etc. Analysis of flood events over the five-year period revealed substantial impacts, with 21.60% of the total area experiencing inundation. This flooding affected 6.92% of cropland and 4.16% of the population. Furthermore, 18.10% of the road network, spanning over 21,000 km within the study area, was also affected. This system has the potential to enhance emergency response capabilities during flood events and inform more effective disaster mitigation policies. Full article
