This work presents a comparison of different commercial tapes belonging to the second-generation High-Temperature Superconductors (2G HTS) produced by SuNAM Co., Ltd., SuperOx, and Shanghai Superconductors Technology Co., Ltd. (SST) companies. The aim is to investigate pinning mechanisms responsible for best performances, looking at the anisotropy of the irreversibility field and of the flux pinning energy. The irreversibility line states the upper limit of current-carrying capacity, whereas the flux pinning energy explores the ability of material defects to act as weak collectively or strong single vortex pinning centers. All investigated samples have artificial pinning centers (APCs) included in the superconducting matrix: BHO-doped EuBCO for SST, Y2O3 in YBCO for SuperOx, and Gd2O3 particles trapped in GdBCO for SuNAM. Resistive transition curves were measured in high magnetic fields up to 16 T for magnetic field orientations parallel and perpendicular to the tape surface. We found that the anistropy of SST tape shows an overall independence both on temperature and magnetic field, while the other two samples show a more complex behavior. This leads to the conclusion that properly engineered APC optimization in coated conductors can further reduce anisotropy of superconducting properties. Full article

The study of granularity in superconducting films by using AC susceptibility has a crucial role in the development of and improvement in the ReBCO-coated conductors, which are a constantly evolving reality in the modern power applications of superconductivity. Specifically, the study of the granularity is essential because the ReBCO superconducting wires and tapes are far from the regularity of a single crystal while they often present an inter- and intragranular contribution to the critical current density. On the other hand, the AC susceptibility is a key part of the characterization of a granular sample because this technique is very sensitive to the presence of granularity in the superconductors and, moreover, the study of its first harmonic allows for determining pivotal properties such as the pinning energy as well as the dissipation processes acting in the sample. The pinning energy values and the granularity of an YBCO thin film have been studied by means of AC susceptibility measurements as a function of the AC amplitude, temperature, and DC field. In particular, the first harmonic imaginary component of the AC susceptibility χ1 related to the dissipation processes of the sample has been studied. First, starting from the Brandt approach, the critical current density Jc and the pinning energy U of the sample have been extracted at 77 K by using the χ1 measurements as a function of the AC amplitude at different AC frequencies and DC fields. From these measurements, a first signal of granularity appears. In order to confirm it, the temperature dependence of the χ1 at different DC fields has been studied and a contribution deriving from the inter- and intragranular part of the sample has emerged. By taking the temperature corresponding to the crossover between the two contributions at the different DC fields, the intergranular and intragranular response has been separated. Successively, the temperature has been fixed to 77 K, together with an AC frequency equal to 1597.9 Hz, and the χ1 as a function of the DC field at different AC amplitudes has been analyzed showing a clear presence of granularity in all the curves. By drawing the contour plot of the χ1 with the DC and AC values, it was possible to determine the best parameters to put at 77 K in order to exploit the material for applications. Full article

Ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) has been proposed as a promising texturing technology that uses the film epitaxy method to obtain biaxial texture on a non-textured metal or compound substrate. Magnesium oxide (MgO) is the most well explored texturing material. In order to obtain the optimal biaxial texture, the actual thickness of the IBAD-MgO film must be controlled within 12nm. Due to the bombardment of ion beams, IBAD-MgO has large lattice deformation, poor texture, and many defects in the films. In this work, the solution deposition planarization (SDP) method was used to deposit oxide amorphous Y2O3 films on the surface of Hastelloy C276 tapes instead of the electrochemical polishing, sputtering-Al2O3 and sputtering-Y2O3 in the commercialized buffer layer. An additional homogeneous epitaxy MgO (epi-MgO) layer, which was used to improve the biaxial texture in the IBAD-MgO layer, was deposited on the IBAD-MgO layer by electron-beam evaporation. The effects of growth temperature, film thickness, deposition rate, and oxygen pressure on the texture and morphology of the epi-MgO film were systematically studied. The best full width at half maximum (FWHM) values were 2.2° for the out-of-plane texture and 4.8° for the in-plane texture for epi-MgO films, respectively. Subsequently, the LaMnO3 cap layer and YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) functional layer were deposited on the epi-MgO layer to test the quality of the MgO layer. Finally, the critical current density of the YBCO films was 6 MA/cm2 (77 K, 500 nm, self-field), indicating that this research provides a high-quality MgO substrate for the YBCO layer. Full article

YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) thin films with the addition of Cl were prepared on Hastelloy tape by the extremely low fluorine metal-organic deposition (MOD) technique. The composition and microstructure of the present samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was revealed that the Cl-added YBCO thin films achieved better texture and density compared with the pure YBCO films. The superconducting properties at magnetic fields were measured using the magnetic property measurement system (MPMS). The results showed that the sample onset transition temperature (Tc, on) did not change significantly after the addition of Cl. The critical current density (Jc) in the presence of YBCO with the addition of Cl increased significantly. Meanwhile, both the Jc and gravitational force (Fp) of the (Cl, Hf) co-added YBCO films were further enhanced at different magnetic fields. The thermodynamic analysis of the BaCO3 removal reaction revealed that the addition of Cl to YBCO formed chlorine compounds, which were effective in avoiding the formation of BaCO3. Further, the calculation results of the Gibbs free energy at different pressure quotients showed that the stability of the relevant chlorine compounds occurred in the order of BaCl2 > CuCl2 > YCl3 and the oxidation of BaCl2 to BaO required a higher temperature compared to BaF2, implying the potential advantages of inhibiting the a-axis growth. Current-limiting superconducting cable uses the quench resistance of superconductor under short-circuit current to improve the short-circuit impedance of the system. In this paper, the design of current-limiting 10 kV three-phase tri-axial superconducting cable is studied. The design methods of cable conductor layer, insulation layer and current-limiting characteristics are given, and one 5 m-long sample is fabricated for testing. The sample is made of stainless-steel-reinforced yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) tape, with an expected rated current of 2.5 kA and rated voltage of 10 kV. The test results show that the designed cable can transmit a maximum AC current of 3.0 kA at 77 K. The cable has passed the power frequency withstand voltage, partial discharge and lightning impulse tests. The current limiting characteristics under the action of DC pulse current show that the cable can quickly quench and produce resistance, and the corresponding equivalent resistance value also changes along with current amplitude and duration. In DC systems, DC resistive type superconducting fault current limiters (R-SFCLs) can respond within a few hundred milliseconds and limit the fault current to a very low level to protect the power equipment in DC systems. The main part of R-SFCLs are superconducting tapes. When short-circuit faults occur in the system, the superconducting tapes will quench and become a large quenched resistor to limit the fault current. The surrounding magnetic fields and the magnetic fields caused by the superconducting tapes itself influence the quench characteristics of the superconducting tapes of R-SFCLs. Thus, the current limiting characteristics of R-SFCLs will also be affected. Until present, very few studies have investigated the effects of magnetic fields on quench characteristics of superconducting tapes for DC R-SFCL. The objective of this paper is to obtain the effects of magnetic fields on quench characteristics of superconducting tapes for DC R-SFCL. Two different kinds of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) tapes are studied under a permanent magnetic field of 0, 42.4, 75.9, 122.9 mT, respectively. One is from Shanghai Superconductor Technology Co., Ltd., Shanghai, China, type ST-12-L (named SC_SH) and the other is from American Superconductor Inc. Boston, MA, USA, type 8602 (named SC_8602). The research results show that the magnetic fields influence both the amplitude and the rising rate of the quenched resistance of an SC_SH tape. Under the same magnetic field, both the speed of quenching and the quenching resistance of SC_SH tape are larger than them of SC_8602 when the prospective current exceeds 800 A. Thus SC_SH tape can limit the fault current faster and to a lower level. Full article

This paper experimentally analyzes the critical current degradation and AC (alternating current) losses of second-generation (2G) high-temperature superconductor (HTS) tape during the impregnation process. Two impregnation materials were utilized: Gallium-Indium-Tin (GaInSn), and an epoxy resin, Araldite. The critical current of the impregnation materials was measured after different thermal cycles and compared with the tape with no impregnation process. The experimental results show that the critical current of Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide (YBCO) short samples varies between differently impregnated materials. The resin, Araldite, degraded the critical current; however, the GaInSn showed no degradation. Two degradation patterns with Araldite were identified due to the impregnation process, and the corresponding causes were analyzed. We further measured the AC losses of tapes impregnated with liquid metal at different frequencies, up to 600 Hz. Based on the experimental results, GaInSn liquid metal should be the most suitable impregnation material in terms of critical current degradation. Full article

A multi-aperture shower design is reported to improve the transverse uniformity of GdYBCO superconducting films on the template of sputtered-LaMnO3/epitaxial-MgO/IBAD-MgO/solution deposition planarization (SDP)-Y2O3-buffered Hastelloy tapes. The GdYBCO films were prepared by the metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) process. The transverse uniformities of structure, morphology, thickness, and performance were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), step profiler, and the standard four-probe method using the criteria of 1 μV/cm, respectively. Through adopting the multi-aperture shower instead of the slit shower, measurement by step profiler revealed that the thickness difference between the middle and the edges based on the slit shower design was well eliminated. Characterization by SEM showed that a GdYBCO film with a smooth surface was successfully prepared. Moreover, the transport critical current density (Jc) of its middle and edge positions at 77 K and self-field were found to be over 5 MA/cm2 through adopting the micro-bridge four-probe method. Lanthanum zirconate (LZO) films from water-based precursors were deposited on Ni-5%W tape by chemical solution deposition. The buffer capacity of these layers includes the prevention of Ni oxidation of the substrate and Ni penetration towards the YBCO film which is detrimental for the superconducting properties. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy depth profiling was used to study the barrier efficiency before and after an additional oxygen annealing step, which simulates the thermal treatment for YBCO thin film synthesis. Measurements revealed that the thermal treatment in presence of oxygen could severely increase Ni diffusion. Nonetheless it was shown that from the water-based precursors’ buffer layers with sufficient barrier capacity towards Ni penetration could be synthesized if the layers meet a certain critical thickness and density. In this study, the stress analysis of YBCO/CeO2/YSZ/CeO2/Ni architextured materials under cryogenic conditions was carried out for coated conductor applications. YBCO/CeO2/YSZ/CeO2 multilayer films were fabricated on Ni tape substrate using reel-to-reel sol-gel and Pulse Laser Deposition (PLD) systems. The microstructural evolution of high temperature superconducting YBCO film and buffer layers with CeO2/YSZ/CeO2 configuration grown on textured Ni tape substrates were investigated by a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). SEM observations revealed that crack-free, pinhole-free, continuous superconducting film and buffer layers were obtained by solgel and PLD systems. The thermal distribution in the each layer was calculated using the classical lamination theory in the temperature range of 25 to -270°C in liquid helium media. The residual stresses occurred during the manufacturing are neglected therefore, all the residual stresses are assumed to be zero at 25°C. Different thermal expansion coefficients and modulus of elasticity bring about the thermal stresses in the layers. Full article
