This paper presents a highly sensitive and tunable graphene-based metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) operating in the near-terahertz band. The structure features a unique flower-like graphene pattern, consisting of a Au substrate, a SiO2 dielectric layer, and the patterned graphene. Multiple reflections of incident light between the gold and graphene layers increase the duration and intensity of the interaction, resulting in efficient absorption at specific frequencies. The design utilizes surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to achieve near-perfect absorption of 99.9947% and 99.6079% at 11.7475 THz and 15.8196 THz, respectively. By tuning the Fermi level and relaxation time of graphene, it is possible to precisely control the frequency and absorptivity of the absorption peak, thereby demonstrating the dynamic tunability of the absorber. The high symmetry and periodic arrangement of the structure ensures insensitivity to the polarization angle of the incident light in the range of 0° to 90°, making it extremely valuable in practical applications. In addition, the absorber exhibits very high sensitivity to changes in ambient refractive index with a maximum sensitivity of 3.205 THz/RIU, a quality factor (FOM) of 11.3011 RIU−1, and a Q-Factor of 48.61. It has broad application prospects in the fields of sensors, optoelectronic devices, and terahertz imaging. Full article

In recent years, the active control of terahertz waves using artificial microstructures has attracted increasing attention, especially toward the ones that have multiple plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) responses. Here, a homogeneous graphene-metal metasurface, exhibiting tunable dual-PIT in its terahertz (THz) spectral response, is investigated numerically and theoretically. Individual and simultaneous control of the two PIT transmission windows and the two slow-light effects are achieved by reconstructing the Fermi energies of the graphene strips. The modulation behavior can be expounded by the classical coupled three-particle model, which is confirmed by the simulation results. Moreover, the electric field distribution is introduced to analyze the dual-PIT active modulation mechanism. This work provides theoretical guidance for versatile applications in multi-function terahertz switches and slow-light devices. Full article

In this paper, we propose the use of a monolayer graphene metasurface to achieve various excellent functions, such as sensing, slow light, and optical switching through the phenomenon of plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). The designed structure of the metasurface consists of a diamond-shaped cross and a pentagon graphene resonator. We conducted an analysis of the electric field distribution and utilized Lorentz resonance theory to study the PIT window that is generated by the coupling of bright-bright modes. Additionally, by adjusting the Fermi level of graphene, we were able to achieve tunable dual frequency switching modulators. Furthermore, the metasurface also demonstrates exceptional sensing performance, with sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) reaching values of 3.70 THz/RIU (refractive index unit) and 22.40 RIU-1, respectively. As a result, our numerical findings hold significant guiding significance for the design of outstanding terahertz sensors and photonic devices. Full article

We employed the CST Microwave Studio software 2020 and the FDID algorithm for simulation. We have designed a terahertz broadband absorber based on Dirac semimetals and graphene, achieving continuous broadband absorption with a rate exceeding 80% over the range from 7.6776 to 9.172 THz. This broadband absorber features two independent tuning modes, utilizing graphene and Dirac semimetals, and exhibits strong electromagnetic adaptability. Furthermore, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the physical mechanisms underlying the high absorption in these absorbers using impedance matching theory and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) theory. Variations in the dielectric constants of different dielectric layers and the relaxation time of graphene can also modulate the absorption rate. In summary, our proposed terahertz broadband absorber, employing two distinct tunable materials, enhances the device’s flexibility and environmental adaptability, offering promising prospects for wideband absorption applications. Terahertz is one of the most promising technologies for high-speed communication and large-scale data transmission. As a classical optical component, ring resonators are extensively utilized in the design of band-pass and frequency-selective devices across various wavebands, owing to their unique characteristics, including optical comb generation, compactness, and low manufacturing cost. While substantial progress has been made in the study of ring resonators, their application in terahertz surface wave systems remains less than fully optimized. This paper presents several spoof surface plasmon polariton-based devices, which were realized using ring resonators at terahertz frequencies. The influence of both the radius of the ring resonator and the width of the waveguide coupling gap on the coupling coefficient are investigated. The band-stop filters based on the cascaded ring resonator exhibit a 0.005 THz broader frequency bandwidth compared to the single-ring resonator filter and achieve a minimum stopband attenuation of 28 dB. The add–drop multiplexers based on the asymmetric ring resonator enable selective surface wave outputs at different ports by rotating the ring resonator. The devices designed in this study offer valuable insights for the development of on-chip terahertz components. Full article

In this study, we propose a mechanism for tuning the modal characteristics of a wedge plasmonic waveguide. The wedge plasmonic waveguide is composed of a thin metallic layer deposited on a wedge-shaped dielectric waveguide. The tuning mechanism is based on controlling the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode at the interface between the metal layer and the dielectric waveguide instead of controlling the SPP mode at the interface between the wedge-shaped metal layer and the surrounding media. This mechanism is performed by modulating the effective refractive index of the dielectric waveguide using a closely coupled tuning waveguide. The numerically investigated results show that the propagation length of the device can be tuned more than 100%; this characteristic has not been explored yet in previous studies. The effective mode area with deep-subwavelength size is almost kept constant while tuning the propagation length. This study offers new insights into tailoring the modal characteristics of plasmonic waveguides based on controlling the mode property at the interface between the metal layer and the dielectric waveguide. This study is also a guideline for developing active plasmonic devices such as tunable nanoscale lightwave guiding waveguides and THz optic modulators. Full article

Graphene can support surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the terahertz band, and graphene SPP sensors are widely used in the field of terahertz micro- and nano-optical devices. In this paper, we propose an H-shaped graphene metasurface and investigate the plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) phenomenon in the proposed structure using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Our results show that the Fermi energy levels, as well as certain shape parameters, can effectively modulate the PIT phenomenon in the proposed structure. Interestingly, changing some of these shape parameters can excite two dips into three. In terms of sensing performance, the maximum values of sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) are 1.4028 THz/RIU and 17.97, respectively. These results offer valuable guidance for the use of terahertz optical graphene SPP sensors. Full article

In this paper, an absorber with multi-band, tunable, high Q, and high sensitivity, based on terahertz periodic two-dimensional patterned graphene surface plasmon resonance (SPR), is proposed. The absorber consists of a bottom metal film separated by a periodically patterned graphene metamaterial structure and a SiO2 dielectric layer, where the patterned graphene layer is etched by “+” and “L” shapes and circles. It has simple structural features that can greatly simplify the fabrication process. We have analyzed the optical properties of a graphene surface plasmon perfect metamaterial absorber based on graphene in the terahertz region using the finite-difference method in time domain (FDTD). The results show that the absorber device exhibits three perfect absorption peaks in the terahertz bands of f1 = 1.55 THz, f2 = 4.19 THz, and f3 = 6.92 THz, with absorption rates as high as 98.70%, 99.63%, and 99.42%, respectively. By discussing the effects of parameters such as the geometrical dimensions of patterned graphene metamaterial structure “+” width W1, “L” width W2, circular width R, and the thickness of the dielectric layer on the absorption performance of absorber, as well as investigating the chemical potential and relaxation time of patterned-layer graphene material, it was found that the amplitude of the absorption peaks and the frequency of resonance of absorber devices can be dynamically adjusted. Finally, we simulated the spectra as the surrounding refractive index n varied to better evaluate the sensing performance of the structure, yielding structural sensitivities up to 382 GHz/RIU. Based on this study, we find that the results of our research will open new doors for the use of multi-band, tunable, polarization-independent metamaterial absorbers that are insensitive to large-angle oblique incidence. High thermal conductivity and a high breakdown field make diamond a promising candidate for high-power and high-temperature semiconductor devices. Diamond also has a higher radiation hardness than silicon. Recent studies show that diamond has exceptionally large electron and hole momentum relaxation times, facilitating compact THz and sub-THz plasmonic sources and detectors working at room temperature and elevated temperatures. The plasmonic resonance quality factor in diamond TeraFETs could be larger than unity for the 240–600 GHz atmospheric window, which could make them viable for 6G communications applications. This paper reviews the potential and challenges of diamond technology, showing that diamond might augment silicon for high-power and high-frequency compact devices with special advantages for extreme environments and high-frequency applications. Recent advancements in terahertz (THz) wave technology have highlighted the criticality of circular-polarization detection, fostering the development of more compact, efficient on-chip THz circular-polarization detectors. In response to this technological imperative, we presented a chiral-antenna-integrated GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW) THz detector. The chiral antenna selectively couples the incident light of a specific circular-polarization state into a surface-plasmon polariton wave that enhances the absorptance of the QWs by a factor of 12 relative to a standard 45° faceted device, and reflects a significant amount of the incident light of the orthogonal circular-polarization state. The circular-polarization selectivity is further enhanced by the QWs with a strong intrinsic anisotropy, resulting in a circular-polarization extinction ratio (CPER) as high as 26 at 6.52 THz. In addition, the operation band of the device can be adjusted by tuning the structural parameters of the chiral structure. Moreover, the device preserves a high performance for oblique incidence within a range of ±5°, and the device architecture is compatible with a focal plane array. This report communicates a promising approach for the development of miniaturized on-chip THz circular-polarization detectors. Full article

In recent years, the development of terahertz (THz) technology has attracted significant attention. Various tunable devices for THz waves (0.1 THz–10 THz) have been proposed, including devices that modulate the amplitude, polarization, phase, and absorption. Traditional metal materials are often faced with the problem of non-adjustment, so the designed terahertz devices play a single role and do not have multiple uses, which greatly limits their development. As an excellent phase change material, VO2’s properties can be transformed by external temperature stimulation, which provides new inspiration for the development of terahertz devices. To address these issues, this study innovatively combines metamaterials with phase change materials, leveraging their design flexibility and temperature-induced phase transition characteristics. We have designed a THz intelligent absorber that not only enables flexible switching between multiple functionalities but also achieves precise performance tuning through temperature stimulation. Furthermore, we have taken into consideration factors such as the polarization mode, environmental temperature, structural parameters, and incident angle, ensuring the device’s process tolerance and environmental adaptability. Additionally, by exploiting the principle of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) accompanied by local field enhancement, we have monitored and analyzed the resonant process through electric field characterization. In summary, the innovative approach and superior performance of this structure provide broader insights and methods for THz device design, contributing to its theoretical research value. Moreover, the proposed absorber holds potential for practical applications in electromagnetic invisibility, shielding, modulation, and detection scenarios. Full article

This paper presents a new theoretical proposal for a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) terahertz metamaterial absorber with five narrow absorption peaks. The overall structure comprises a sandwich stack consisting of a gold bottom layer, a silica medium, and a single-layer patterned graphene array on top. COMSOL simulation represents that the five absorption peaks under TE polarization are at fI = 1.99 THz (95.82%), f = 6.00 THz (98.47%), f = 7.37 THz (98.72%), f = 8.47 THz (99.87%), and fV = 9.38 THz (97.20%), respectively, which is almost consistent with the absorption performance under TM polarization. In contrast to noble metal absorbers, its absorption rates and resonance frequencies can be dynamically regulated by controlling the Fermi level and relaxation time of graphene. In addition, the device can maintain high absorptivity at 0~50° in TE polarization and 0~40° in TM polarization. The maximum refractive index sensitivity can reach SV = 1.75 THz/RIU, and the maximum figure of merit (FOM) can reach FOMV = 12.774 RIU−1. In conclusion, our design has the properties of dynamic tunability, polarization independence, wide-incident-angle absorption, and fine refractive index sensitivity. We believe that the device has potential applications in photodetectors, active optoelectronic devices, sensors, and other related fields. Full article

With the intensive development of data transmitting and processing devices in the terahertz (THz) frequency range, an important part of which are integrated plasmonic components and communication lines, it becomes necessary to measure correctly the optical constants of their conductive surfaces. In this paper, we describe a reliable method for determining the effective permittivity εm of a metal surface from the measured characteristics (refractive and absorption indices) of THz surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The novelty of the method is the conduction of measurements on a metal surface with a dielectric layer of subwavelength thickness, suppressing the radiative losses of SPPs, which are not taken into account by the SPP dispersion equation. The method is tested on a number of flat “gold sputtering–zinc sulfide layer–air” structures with the use of the THz radiation (λ0 = 141 μm) from the Novosibirsk free electron laser (NovoFEL). The SPP characteristics are determined from interferograms measured with a plasmon Michelson interferometer. It is found that the method allows a significant increase in the accuracy of the εm in comparison with measurements on the same metal surface without a dielectric layer. Full article

The coupling effects of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) from metamaterials induce variation in both the frequency and intensity of plasmonic modes. Here, we report an angular-dependent THz modulator with hybrid metal–graphene metastructures. The metastructures composed of the period gold split-rod arrays on top of a monolayer graphene, which show redshift modulation in the THz region with an increasing incident angle due to the strong out-of-plane magnetic flux introduced by the clockwise circular current at the oblique incidence. By utilizing graphene-based actively tunable conductor with ion-gel electrical gating, the THz transmission can be significantly modified. The modulation depth of the hybrid metal–graphene metastructure modulator can reach ~37.6% at 0.62 THz with a gate voltage of −3 V. The theoretical modeling of transmitted dependency on frequency and incident angle is demonstrated at different Fermi energies, which fits well with the experimental results. This hybrid device can offer a useful method for THz applications (such as angle sensors or angular-resolved spectroscopy), where angle-dependent modulation is needed. Full article

In this paper, we study the sensitivity-tunable terahertz (THz) liquid/gas biosensor in a coupling prism–three-dimensional Dirac semimetal (3D DSM) multilayer structure. The high sensitivity of the biosensor originates from the sharp reflected peak caused by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) mode. This structure achieves the tunability of sensitivity due to the fact that the reflectance could be modulated by the Fermi energy of 3D DSM. Besides, it is found that the sensitivity curve depends heavily on the structural parameters of 3D DSM. After parameter optimization, we obtained sensitivity over 100°/RIU for liquid biosensor. We believe this simple structure provides a reference idea for realizing high sensitivity and a tunable biosensor device. Full article
