The increasing demand for autonomous wireless sensors in Internet of Things (IoT) applications has intensified research on vibration energy harvesting, particularly in the low-frequency range where ambient vibrations are most prevalent. However, most vibration energy harvesters operate efficiently only at a single resonance mode, resulting in a narrow operational bandwidth and pronounced performance degradation under frequency detuning. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a multimodal hybrid piezoelectric–electromagnetic vibration energy harvester that exploits both the first and second resonance modes of a cantilever-based structure to achieve broadband low-frequency operation. The design is guided by the complementary utilization of strain-dominated and velocity-dominated regions associated with different vibration modes. Numerical modeling and finite element simulations are employed to investigate the influence of mass distribution, deformation characteristics, and relative velocity on energy conversion performance. A secondary cantilever carrying the electromagnetic coil is introduced to enhance the relative motion between the coil and the magnetic field, thereby extending the effective operational bandwidth. The experimental results demonstrate increased harvested power, improved energy conversion efficiency, and a significantly broadened effective frequency range compared to conventional single-mode piezoelectric and electromagnetic energy harvesters. This work presents the development of a wrist-worn wireless sensor system for high-accuracy indoor human zone tracking. The proposed system employs machine learning techniques to combine data from multiple sources, including a Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) from wireless signals, three-axis acceleration, and three-axis angular velocity. A prototype wearable wireless sensor device was implemented using a SparkFun Thing Plus-XBee3 microcontroller supporting the Zigbee/IEEE 802.15.4 standard at 2.4 GHz, integrated with a six-degree-of-freedom IMU sensor (MPU-6050). Experiments using one wrist-worn sensor as a transmitter and one base station as a receiver were conducted in a two-story residential building environment covering three zones (i.e., staircase area, living room, and dining room) under static and dynamic test scenarios. Classification performances of 33 machine learning classifiers with different data feature groups and window sizes were evaluated. The results demonstrate the achievement of wrist-worn wireless sensor system development. The system exhibits high communication reliability with a packet delivery ratio (PDR) of 99.99% and can efficiently track data signals in real time. Results indicate that using only raw RSSI data achieves 75.0% accuracy in classifying human zones. However, when statistical RSSI features and accelerometer data fusion are applied, accuracies significantly increase to 98.7% (static scenario, wide neural network with a window size of 25) and 99.6% (dynamic scenario, Fine k-NN). These results demonstrate the system’s potential for indoor human tracking applications. Full article

Low-cost air quality sensors enable dense urban monitoring networks but require calibration against reference-grade instruments. While machine learning calibration is well-established for co-located sensor pairs, applying these calibrations to sensors deployed far from any reference station—the operational reality for most network sensors—lacks systematic methodology. We address this gap using 24 months of hourly data (August 2023–July 2025) from Sofia, Bulgaria, where five official reference stations (Executive Environmental Agency) operate alongside 22 AirThings low-cost sensors, four of which are co-located. Random Forest models achieved R2(0.53,0.75) across PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3, representing from 40% (for O3) to 408% (for PM2.5) improvement over Multiple Linear Regression baselines. Using leave-one-station-out spatial cross-validation, we derived pollutant-specific uncertainty growth rates (α) from 3.84% to 5.62% per km, characterizing how calibration uncertainty increases with distance from reference stations (statistically significant for PM10 and O3, p<0.05). Applied to 18 non-co-located sensors, the framework generated 1.2 million calibrated hourly measurements with 95% prediction intervals over the study period. Co-location sites spaced 6 km apart achieve a less than 30% uncertainty increase at network midpoints, within EU Air Quality Directive thresholds for indicative monitoring. These empirically derived α parameters enable network planners to predict measurement reliability at arbitrary sensor locations without ground-truth validation, providing evidence-based guidance for cost-effective hybrid monitoring network design. Water pans and small dams play a vital role in supplying domestic water in rural regions characterised by seasonal rainfall regimes, with increasing importance as a climate change adaptation measure. Despite their small individual size, the collective impact of numerous water pans is significant. Commercially available monitoring systems are often too costly to be justified for these decentralised infrastructures, resulting in limited data availability that impedes detailed studies aimed at improving their performance. Here, we developed a low-cost monitoring station network that measures water level (JSN-SR04T ultrasonic sensor), precipitation (3D-printed tipping-bucket gauge), and air temperature and humidity (DHT22 sensor). Each station costs less than 12,000 KES (≈93 USD in March 2026), making it suitable for such decentralised multi-site monitoring. A field trial conducted from June to November 2025 at four water pans in the Kakia-Esamburmbur Catchment, Kenya, compared the collected data with an automatic weather station and manual observations. Water level measurements were more accurate than manual reference readings, while air temperature showed biases of 1.4 to 1.8 °C. Precipitation data were largely inaccurate due to inadequate sensor levelling. Overall operational reliability reached 83%, indicating potential for improvements to reduce maintenance efforts and fully exploit the advantages of its low-cost hardware. Full article

Conservation and management of built cultural heritage require multidisciplinary approaches and reliable information to support decision-making. In this context, digital transformation strategies that combine Building Information Modeling (BIM) with monitoring technologies offer significant potential to improve heritage management. This paper presents a monitoring solution based on a wireless network of low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) sensors integrated within a Heritage Building Information Model (HBIM), applied to Monserrate Palace in Sintra, Portugal. The proposed approach covers all implementation stages, including HBIM development from as-built data collection, deployment of a wireless monitoring network for acceleration and environmental parameters, and integration of monitoring data into a BIM-based platform. The system aims to create a Digital Shadow of the building as a step towards a Digital Twin framework, enabling centralized visualization and management of structural and environmental information through the HBIM model and dedicated dashboards. Given the lower accuracy of low-cost sensors, in situ calibration with reference equipment was conducted to validate the recorded data. Implementing monitoring systems in heritage contexts presents challenges, such as limited historical documentation and the need for minimally invasive interventions. Despite these constraints, the proposed solution demonstrates the advantages of integrating monitoring data within HBIM, enabling centralized data management and improved understanding of building performance and conservation needs. Assistive mobility devices for small animals require reliable monitoring to ensure safe and comfortable operation without increasing system complexity or invasiveness. This study presents a low-cost monitoring platform that integrates a laser-induced graphene (LIG) contact-temperature sensor into a passive mobility device for small dogs, supported by a lightweight Internet of Things (IoT) architecture. The system combines contact temperature, ambient temperature, speed, and obstacle distance using an energy-aware acquisition strategy and prioritized wireless transmission for near-real-time monitoring. An unsupervised anomaly detection framework based on Isolation Forest identifies potentially unsafe operating conditions without labeled pathological data by leveraging absolute temperature and the differential feature ΔT between contact and ambient measurements. Experimental validation was conducted under controlled indoor conditions across six independent sessions with a small-breed dog, including static and dynamic phases to ensure repeatability. The system achieved packet delivery ratios of approximately 95%, with typical end-to-end latencies below 500 ms and worst-case delays below 850 ms. The proposed approach detected localized thermal deviations associated with friction or prolonged contact while remaining robust to normal activity- and environment-driven variations. These results demonstrate the feasibility of integrating LIG-based sensing and unsupervised analytics into assistive animal mobility platforms to enhance safety through continuous, non-invasive monitoring. The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has intensified the need for efficient real-time anomaly and intrusion detection, making the selection of an appropriate Complex Event Processing (CEP) engine a critical architectural decision for security-aware data pipelines. Python-based CEP frameworks offer compelling advantages through the seamless integration with data science and machine learning ecosystems; however, rigorous comparative evaluations of such frameworks under realistic IoT security workloads remain absent from the literature. This study presents the first systematic comparative evaluation of Faust and Streamz—two Python-native CEP engines representing fundamentally different architectural philosophies—specifically in the context of IoT network intrusion detection. Faust was selected for its actor-based stateful processing model with native Kafka integration and distributed table support, while Streamz was selected for its reactive, lightweight pipeline design targeting high-throughput stateless processing, making them representative of the two dominant paradigms in Python stream processing. Although both engines target different application niches, their performance characteristics under realistic CEP workloads have never been rigorously compared, leaving practitioners without empirical guidance. The primary evaluation employs an IoT network intrusion dataset comprising 583,485 events from 83 heterogeneous devices. To assess whether the observed performance characteristics are specific to this single dataset or generalize across different workload profiles, a secondary IoT-adjacent benchmark is included: the PaySim financial transaction dataset (6.4 million records), selected because its event schema, fraud-pattern temporal structure, and volume differ substantially from the intrusion dataset, providing a stress test for cross-workload robustness rather than a claim of domain equivalence. We acknowledge the reviewer’s valid point that a second IoT-specific intrusion dataset (such as TON_IoT or Bot-IoT) would constitute a more directly comparable validation; this is identified as a priority for future work. The load levels used in scalability experiments (up to 5000 events per second) intentionally exceed the dataset’s natural rate to stress-test each engine’s architectural ceiling and identify saturation thresholds relevant to large-scale or multi-sensor IoT deployments. We conducted controlled experiments with comprehensive statistical analysis. Our results demonstrate that Streamz achieves superior throughput at 4450 events per second with 89% efficiency and minimal resource consumption (40 MB memory, 12 ms median latency), while Faust provides robust intrusion pattern detection with 93–98% accuracy and stable, predictable resource utilization (1.4% CPU standard deviation). A multi-framework comparison including Apache Kafka Streams and offline scikit-learn baselines confirms that Faust achieves detection quality competitive with JVM-based alternatives (Faust: 96.2%; Kafka Streams: 96.8%; absolute difference of 0.6 percentage points, not statistically significant at p=0.318) while retaining the Python ecosystem advantages. Statistical analysis confirms significant performance differences across all metrics (p<0.001, Cohen’s d>0.8). Critical scalability thresholds are identified: Streamz maintains efficiency above 95% up to 3500 events per second, while Faust degrades beyond 2500 events per second. These findings provide IoT security engineers and system architects with actionable, empirically grounded guidance for CEP engine selection, establish reproducible benchmarking methodology applicable to future Python-based stream processing evaluations, and advance theoretical understanding of the accuracy–throughput trade-off in stateful versus stateless Python CEP architectures. Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensing can improve traceability, safety, and efficiency of medical waste handling, yet many deployments remain fragmented, lack an end-to-end system architecture, and do not provide the structured data pipelines needed for artificial intelligence (AI) analytics. This paper presents a layered IoT-based system design for medical waste management that integrates: (i) Espressif Systems 32 (ESP32)-based edge devices for fill-level and Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry; (ii) secure network communication; (iii) a cloud backend for data ingestion, storage, and analytics; and (iv) operator dashboards with event-driven alerting. The architecture extends our prior GPS-enabled tracking and route optimization by adding sensor-driven state monitoring, threshold-based decision support, and a time-series data pipeline designed for future AI-driven predictive analytics. In a 30-day pilot with five containers, the system collected one reading every 15 min (14,400 total readings). The backend demonstrated efficient processing with an average Application Programming Interface (API) response time of 45 ms, sub-50 ms database write latency, and high uptime; alerts were delivered promptly upon threshold violations. Compared with a fixed-schedule baseline, the system enabled condition-based collection scheduling with zero data loss. The proposed design emphasizes modularity, fault tolerance, and integration readiness for hospital information systems, providing a practical blueprint for scalable smart-healthcare waste logistics and a foundation for machine learning-based predictive waste management. Wind energy harvesting based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is a promising solution for powering distributed Internet of Things (IoT) nodes, yet its practical efficiency and stability are often hindered by the fluctuating and unpredictable nature of wind. Here, we propose a self-regulating TENG (SR-TENG) that leverages the synergistic effects of centrifugal, elastic, and frictional forces to automatically switch between non-contact and contact modes based on wind speed. This configuration achieves an ultra-low start-up wind speed of 0.86 m/s, ensures sustainable high-performance output across a broad wind speed range, and exhibits excellent durability with no observable performance degradation during 23,000 s of continuous operation at 375 rpm. Systematic structural optimization enables the SR-TENG to reach a peak open-circuit voltage of 140 V, a short-circuit current of 12.5 μA, and a transferred charge of 300 nC at 375 rpm. When integrated with a customized power management circuit, the system delivers a 30.39-fold increase in effective output power at a 1 MΩ load and a 4-fold faster charging rate for a 10 μF capacitor. For practical validation, the harvested ambient wind energy successfully powers a wireless temperature-humidity sensor for real-time cloud data transmission. These results highlight that the SR-TENG holds great potential for advanced wind energy harvesting and self-powered sensing applications in distributed IoT systems. Full article

Energy harvesting plays a pivotal role in enabling sustainable power supply for the Internet of Things and distributed sensor networks, particularly for low-power devices. Piezoelectric energy harvesters based on vortex-induced vibrations offer a promising solution for low-wind-speed applications, yet their performance is constrained by limited bandwidth and sensitivity to wind speed variations. This study addresses these limitations by proposing a novel multi-parameter adjustable piezoelectric energy harvester featuring an inclined cylindrical bluff body. By systematically tuning the inclination angle and installation position, the device achieves substantial performance improvements. Experimental results indicate that the optimized configuration yields a wider operational frequency band and enhanced energy conversion efficiency. Through the experimental results, we discovered the existence of the double-peak phenomenon and the plateau phenomenon. The voltage value of the second peak can reach up to 122.4% of the maximum voltage of the first peak. The duration of the maximum plateau phase can maintain between the wind speed of 2.3 m/s and 5.7 m/s. Full article

Climate change is a critical global challenge, and the building sector accounts for nearly 30% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, remaining a key target for mitigation. Indoor environments contribute significantly to GHG emissions, primarily through heating, cooling, lighting, and occupant-driven energy use. Indoor mapping, serving as the foundation for Digital Twins (DTs), provides a spatiotemporal framework that integrates sensor data with Building Information Modelling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Internet of Things (IoT) to support energy-efficient, low-carbon building operations. This review examined the role of indoor mapping in understanding, modelling, and reducing GHG emissions in buildings. It synthesized current advancements in indoor spatial data acquisition, ranging from Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) to deep learning-based floor plan extraction, and evaluated their contribution to improved indoor environmental analysis. The review highlighted emerging techniques, challenges, and gaps, particularly the limited integration of physical indoor spaces with virtual layers representing assets, occupants, and equipment. Addressing this gap requires embedding spatial modelling as an intermediate analytical layer that structures and contextualizes sensor data to support spatiotemporal decision-making. Overall, this review demonstrated that indoor mapping plays a critical role in transforming spatial information into actionable insights, enabling more accurate energy modelling, enhanced real-time building management, and stronger data-driven strategies for GHG mitigation in the built environment. Vibration energy harvesting is a promising approach to support and supplement power, thereby extending the lifetime of low-power sensor nodes under suitable vibration conditions, i.e., in environments where sufficient ambient vibrations are available. It is not a universal autonomous power-supply solution, particularly when generalized across the Internet of Things (IoT), because the harvested power is typically limited to the µW–mW range and depends strongly on the vibration frequency content, amplitude, and operating point relative to resonance. Furthermore, many practical harvesters rely on resonant mechanisms, which are inherently narrowband, and therefore their performance can degrade significantly under detuning or broadband/variable-frequency excitations. In addition, energy-management and power-conditioning electronics (rectification, storage, and regulation) are required to convert the generated electrical energy into a stable and usable DC supply for practical loads. In this work, we develop a nonlinear state-space model of a three-phase electromagnetic vibration energy harvester with spatially displaced coils and evaluate its electrical output characteristics and DC power behavior using numerical simulations. Urban traffic congestion leads to longer travel times, economic losses, and increased pollution. Recent advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) provide detailed real-time traffic data, yet testing adaptive control strategies directly on live networks remains costly and risky. To address this challenge, we propose an IoT-driven digital twin framework for the design and evaluation of AI-based traffic management systems. The framework is implemented in the Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) and uses its Python 3.14.2 API to emulate a dense network of IoT sensors that stream real-time information on vehicle density, queue lengths, and waiting times. This simulated IoT data feeds an AI agent that adapts traffic signal control in real time. The agent is trained with a composite reward function to jointly minimise vehicle waiting times and emissions. Its performance is compared with fixed-time and vehicle-actuated control under varying traffic demand scenarios. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of combining IoT-based simulation with AI control, providing a safe and scalable pathway towards the real-world deployment of intelligent traffic management systems. Accurate node localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is challenging under variable signal propagation and strict energy constraints. This paper presents a hybrid localization framework that combines a deep neural network (DNN) with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to improve accuracy while reducing energy consumption. The DNN learns the non-linear mapping from received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements to node coordinates, mitigating propagation effects. PSO jointly optimizes key DNN hyperparameters and selects a minimal subset of anchor nodes that preserve localization performance, thereby lowering communication overhead. Simulation results on 200-node networks show that the proposed DNN–PSO achieves a mean localization error (MLE) of 0.87 m, outperforming a standard DNN (1.32 m) and classical multilateration (3.84 m). The optimized anchor selection reduces per-cycle energy consumption by 23% (239 mJ to 184 mJ) while maintaining sub-meter accuracy. Performance remains stable across diverse propagation conditions and scales well with increasing network size. These results indicate that the proposed approach provides an effective accuracy–energy trade-off for resource-constrained IoT/WSN deployments requiring reliable localization. Full article
