Objects and semiochemicals may be used as enrichment in zoos. Domestic cats release Fraction 3 of Facial Pheromone (F3) by rubbing the muzzle to convey relational and territorial information. We aimed to evaluate whether and how the introduction of novel objects and scent stimuli could change the behaviour of one group (N = 5 subjects) of adult European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) hosted at Parco Natura Viva-Garda Zoological Park, Italy. We assessed the behavioural changes following the introduction of novel objects (blocks and rags) and scent (synthetic F3) via observations over four experimental conditions (baseline, rags, F3 rags, blocks) using continuous focal animal sampling. Our results showed that no behavioural differences were found between the different conditions and the baseline, except for the condition with blocks when significantly less exploration was observed. Between conditions, wildcats performed significantly less individual explorative, affiliative, and agonistic behaviours, but more individual inactivity, when exposed to rags after F3 administration. Our findings suggest that the enrichment programme did not substantively affect the behaviour of the zoo-housed wildcats. However, the behavioural differences recorded between conditions suggest that, while novel objects introduced as visual stimuli (blocks) do not affect the wildcat behaviour, novel manipulative objects (rags) might impact their behaviour. Moreover, the changes in affiliative and agonistic behaviours displayed during the condition with exposure to rags sprayed with F3 suggest that such semiochemical could play an appeasement role within this study group. Sexual breeding at the tetraploid level is a promising strategy for rootstock breeding in citrus. Due to the interspecific origin of most of the conventional diploid citrus rootstocks that produced the tetraploid germplasm, the optimization of this strategy requires better knowledge of the meiotic behavior of the tetraploid parents. This work used Genotyping By Sequencing (GBS) data from 103 tetraploid hybrids to study the meiotic behavior and generate a high-density recombination landscape for their tetraploid intergenic Swingle citrumelo and interspecific Volkamer lemon progenitors. A genetic association study was performed with root architecture traits. For citrumelo, high preferential chromosome pairing was revealed and led to an intermediate inheritance with a disomic tendency. Meiosis in Volkamer lemon was more complex than that of citrumelo, with mixed segregation patterns from disomy to tetrasomy. The preferential pairing resulted in low interspecific recombination levels and high interspecific heterozygosity transmission by the diploid gametes. This meiotic behavior affected the efficiency of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) detection. Nevertheless, it enabled a high transmission of disease and pest resistance candidate genes from P. trifoliata that are heterozygous in the citrumelo progenitor. The tetrazyg strategy, using doubled diploids of interspecific origin as parents, appears to be efficient in transferring the dominant traits selected at the parental level to the tetraploid progenies. The increase in demand for pharmaceutical treatments due to pandemic-related illnesses has created a need for improved quality control in drug manufacturing. Understanding the physical, biological, and chemical properties of APIs is an important area of health-related research. As such, research into enhanced chemical sensing and analysis of pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for drug development, delivery and monitoring has become immensely popular in the nanotechnology space. Nanomaterial-based chemical sensors have been used to detect and analyze APIs related to the treatment of various illnesses pre and post administration. Furthermore, electrical and optical techniques are often coupled with nano-chemical sensors to produce data for various applications which relate to the efficiencies of the APIs. In this review, we focus on the latest nanotechnology applied to probing the chemical and biochemical properties of pharmaceutical drugs, placing specific interest on several types of nanomaterial-based chemical sensors, their characteristics, detection methods, and applications. This study offers insight into the progress in drug development and monitoring research for designing improved quality control methods for pharmaceutical and health-related research. Full article

The union or reunion of animals with social groups can be a challenging situation, and little has been published about it when solitary species are concerned. Therefore, the aim of the present study was two-fold: (1) to advocate the need for systematic publications about strategies and the outcomes of reunion episodes in zoos and other facilities; and (2) to describe the behaviour of European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) during one such episode, in which a female cat was reintroduced into her family social group using a gradual reunion procedure and cat appeasing pheromone (CAP) (spot-on). The study comprised three periods: the pre-reunion period (10 days, 20 sessions per wildcat), the post-reunion period (A, 5 days, 10 sessions per wildcat; B, 5 days, 10 sessions per wildcat) and the late-reunion period (5 days, 10 sessions per wildcat). In the post-reunion periods, all wildcats were together in the enclosure and were spotted with CAP pheromone. Per period, we collected data on individual and social behaviours. Individual behaviours, such as attention and self-grooming, were performed more in the pre-reunion than in the post-reunion period. Regarding social behaviours, we found that agonistic behaviours were performed more in the pre-reunion than in the post-reunion period. We observed behavioural changes over the course of the study, with behavioural patterns of the late-reunion periods resembling those of the pre-reunion period. Full article

In this study, we show how surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can be used to monitor the molecular behaviour of aspirin and tenofovir as a means of screening medication for quality control purposes. Gold-coated slides combined with gold/dextran nanoaggregates were used to provide signal enhancement of the drugs using SERS. Aspirin (10% w/v) and tenofovir (20% v/v) were analysed in the presence of the nanomaterials to determine trends in molecular response to changes in gold/dextran concentrations. Qualitative analysis of the functional groups showed specific trends where the peak area increased with polarizability, electron density and decreased atomic radii. Steric hinderance effects also affected the trends in peak area due to the amount of gold/dextran nanoparticles in solution. Statistical analysis provided accurate and precise linear relationships (R2 = 0.99) for the ester and adenine functional groups of aspirin and tenofovir, respectively. From the above findings, the combined use of gold nano-scaffolds and gold/dextran nanomaterials amplified the Raman signal from the drugs to allow for systematic evaluation of their molecular properties. Although more experiments to correlate the findings are still needed, this SERS approach shows great potential as a screening method in the quality control of medications. Full article

The use of lightweight cryptographic algorithms is essential for addressing security in highly constrained environments such as the Internet of Things. In this paper, the performance of lightweight block ciphers in such highly constrained environments is studied. More precisely, focusing—as a case study—on an important family of lightweight ciphers called “Saturnin”, which has been evaluated as a candidate for standardization in the relative ongoing NIST’s competition, we analyze its efficiency in case that it is implemented in a specific resource-constrained environment. To evaluate the results, a comparative study with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is performed, through an appropriate experimental environment. Our results illustrate that significant gain in performance can be achieved, since Saturnin—whose design is inspired by the design of AES—can be almost two times faster than AES in such restricted environments. Rootstocks are crucial for the sustainability of the citrus industry worldwide. Diploid intergeneric Citrus × Poncirus hybrids have contributed considerably to citrus rootstock improvement and their tetraploid (doubled-diploid) forms are important resources for the creation of a new generation of tetraploid rootstocks. To optimize the efficiency of tetraploid rootstock breeding strategies, more knowledge is required on inheritance in the allotetraploid genitors. A set of 159 new SNP markers that fully distinguish Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf. from Citrus species was developed from polymorphisms mined in GBS data and used to establish a genetic map of tetraploid citrumelo (C. × paradisi Macfad. × P. trifoliata) and to analyze the meiotic behavior of tetraploid citrumelo and citrandarin (C. reticulata Blanco × P. trifoliata). The tetraploid citrumelo genetic map was highly syntenic and collinear with the clementine reference genome. The apparent intergeneric recombination rate was strongly limited by high preferential chromosome pairing, resulting in intermediate inheritance with disomic tendency. Such inheritance, also observed in tetraploid citrandarin, results in the transmission by the diploid gametes of a high rate of intergeneric heterozygosity. It is therefore expected that a large part of the genetic value selected in the original diploid intergeneric rootstock is transmitted to the tetraploid sexual progenies. Full article

Drought, heat stress, and unfavorable soil conditions are key abiotic factors affecting quinoa’s growth and development. The aim of this research was to examine the effect of progressive drought and N-fertilization reduction on short-cycle varieties of quinoa (c.v. Titicaca) for different sowing dates during the dry season (from October to December). A two-year experimentation (2017–2018 and 2018–2019) was carried out in Burkina Faso with four levels of irrigation (full irrigation—FI, progressive drought—PD, deficit irrigation—DI and extreme deficit irrigation—EDI) and four levels of N-fertilization (100, 50, 25, and 0 kg N ha−1). Plant phenology and development, just like crop outputs in the form of yield, biomass, and quality of the seeds were evaluated for different sowing dates having different temperature ranges and photoperiodicity. Crop water productivity (CWP) function was used for examining plant’s water use efficiency under drought stress conditions. Emerging findings have shown that CWP was highest under DI and PD (0.683 and 0.576 kg m−3, respectively), while highest yields were observed in 2017–2018 under PD and its interaction with 25 to 50 kg N ha−1 (1356 and 1110 kg ha−1, respectively). Mean temperatures close to 25 °C were suitable for optimal plant growth, while extreme temperatures at anthesis limited the production of grains. Small changes in photoperiodicity from different sowing dates were not critical for plant growth. Full article

A new set of radiative decay parameters (oscillator strengths, transition probabilities) for spectral lines in triply ionized thulium (Tm IV) has been obtained within the framework of the pseudo-relativistic Hartree-Fock (HFR) approach. The effects of configuration interaction and core-polarization have been investigated in detail and the quality of the results has been assessed through a comparison between different HFR physical models. The spectroscopic data listed in the present paper cover electric dipole as well as magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole transitions in a wide range of wavelengths from extreme ultraviolet to near infrared.
