Integrating Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communication for Safer Lane Changes in Smart Work Zones

As transportation systems evolve, ensuring safe and efficient mobility in Intelligent Transportation Systems remains a priority. Work zones, in particular, pose significant safety challenges due to lane closures, which can lead to abrupt braking and sudden lane changes. Most previous research on Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) assumes ideal communication conditions, overlooking the effects of message loss and network unreliability. This study presents a comprehensive smart work zone (SWZ) framework that enhances lane-change safety by the integration of both Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication. Sensor-equipped SWZ barrels and Roadside Units (RSUs) collect and transmit real-time hazard alerts to approaching CAVs, ensuring coverage of critical roadway segments. In this study, a co-simulation framework combining VEINS, OMNeT++, and SUMO is implemented to assess lane-change safety and communication performance under realistic network conditions. Findings indicate that higher Market Penetration Rates (MPRs) of CAVs can lead to improved lane-change safety, with time-to-collision (TTC) values shifting toward safer time ranges. While lower transmission thresholds allow more frequent communication, they contribute to earlier network congestion, whereas higher thresholds maintain efficiency despite increased packet loss at high MPRs. These insights highlight the importance of incorporating realistic communication models when evaluating traffic safety in connected vehicle environments. Full article

Offshore wind turbines have garnered significant attention recently due to their substantial wind energy harvesting capabilities. Pitch control plays a crucial role in maintaining the rated generator speed, particularly in offshore environments characterized by highly turbulent winds, which pose a huge challenge. Moreover, hydraulic pitch systems are favored in large-scale offshore wind turbines due to their superior power-to-weight ratio compared to electrical systems. In this study, a proportional valve-controlled hydraulic pitch system is developed along with an intelligent pitch control strategy aimed at developing rated power in offshore wind turbines. The proposed strategy utilizes a cascade configuration of an improved recurrent Elman neural network, with its parameters optimized using a customized particle swarm optimization algorithm. To assess its effectiveness, the proposed strategy is compared with two other intelligent pitch control strategies, the cascade improved Elman neural network and cascade Elman neural network, and tested in a benchmark wind turbine simulator. Results demonstrate effective power generation, with the proposed strategy yielding a 78.14% and 87.10% enhancement in the mean standard deviation of generator power error compared to the cascade improved Elman neural network and cascade Elman neural network, respectively. These findings underscore the efficacy of the proposed approach in generating rated power. Full article

In this article, we look at the stochastic Wu–Zhang system (SWZS) forced by multiplicative Brownian motion in the Itô sense. The mapping method, which is an effective analytical method, is employed to investigate the exact wave solutions of the aforementioned equation. The proposed scheme provides new types of exact solutions including periodic solitons, kink solitons, singular solitons and so on, to describe the wave propagation in quantum mechanics and analyze a wide range of essential physical phenomena. In the absence of noise, we obtain some previously found solutions of SWZS. Additionally, using the MATLAB program, the impacts of the noise term on the analytical solution of the SWZS were demonstrated. Full article

Land degradation, food and tenure insecurity are significant problems in the northern highlands of Ethiopia, particularly in the region known as the country’s famine corridor. Addressing these twine issues in the region has become a focal point for both local and international organizations, underscoring the significance of preventive measures. Since 2000, the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) has been implementing sustainable land management and certification programs. This study aims on households involved in these programs, specifically in Dessie Zuria and Kutaber Woredas, South Wello Zone (SWZ). The primary objectives of the research were to assess households’ current food security status, identify factors influencing their food security, and classify coping and survival strategies employed by households during food shortages. Primary and secondary sources have been used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Quantitative data were collected from surveyed households and analyzed USING SPSS software version 26, whereas qualitative data were transcribed, grouped, and interpreted in line with the aim of the research. Three food security models, namely the Household Food Balance Model, Months of Adequate Household Food Provisioning, and Household Dietary Diversity Score, were employed to evaluate food security. Consequently, a significant percentage of the surveyed households, amounting to 88.3%, 35.6%, and 93.8%, were found to experience food insecurity according to the respective models. Rainfall shortages and variability, crop pests and diseases, shrinking farm plots, and land degradation are among the identified food security determinants. During dearth periods, households deploy a variety of coping and survival strategies. To mitigate food insecurity stemming from both natural and socio-economic factors, the research suggests several recommendations. These include advocating for tenure policy reforms by the GoE, and the local governments should promote the adoption of efficient land management practices, instituting a land certification system based on cadasters, encouraging family planning, boosting investments in education and literacy, raising awareness and providing training in climate-smart agriculture techniques, educating communities on optimal grain utilization, saving, trade, and storage methods, facilitating opportunities for income generation through off-farm and non-farm activities, and offering support for crop and livestock diversification. Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are the only primitive spermatogonial cells in males that can naturally transmit genetic information to their offspring and replicate throughout their lives. Phospholipase D family member 6 (PLD6) has recently been found to be a surface marker for SSCs in mice and boars; however, it has not been validated in cattle. The results of reversed transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) found that the relative expression of the PLD6 gene in the testicular tissues of two-year-old Simmental calves was significantly higher than that of six-month-old calves. Immunofluorescent staining further verified the expression of PLD6 protein in bovine spermatogenic cells like germ cell marker DEAD box helicase 4 (DDX4, also known as VASA). Based on multiple bioinformatic databases, PLD6 is a conservative protein which has high homology with mouse Q5SWZ9 protein. It is closely involved in the normal functioning of the reproductive system. Molecular dynamics simulation analyzed the binding of PLD6 as a phospholipase to cardiolipin (CL), and the PLD6-CL complex showed high stability. The protein interaction network analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between PLD6 and piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) binding protein. PLD6 acts as an endonuclease and participates in piRNA production. In addition, PLD6 in bovine and mouse testes has a similar expression pattern with the spermatogonium-related genes VASA and piwi like RNA-mediated gene silencing 2 (PIWIL2). In conclusion, these analyses imply that PLD6 has a relatively high expression in bovine testes and could be used as a biomarker for spermatogenic cells including SSCs. Full article

Phytochemical profiling of six natural populations of Gentianella austriaca was performed by HPLC identification and quantification of a number of secondary metabolites, and evaluation of time series of peak areas by chemometric analysis. Phytochemical analysis of G. austriaca revealed the presence of iridoids, flavone-C-glucosides and xanthones. Twelve secondary metabolites were identified in the aerial parts, roots and seeds, including swertiamarin (SWM), gentiopicrin (GP), sweroside (SWZ), isoorientin (ISOOR), swertisin (SWE), demethylbellidifolin-8-O-glucoside (DMB-8-O-glc), bellidifolin-8-O-glucoside (BDF-8-O-glc), mangiferin (MGF), corymbiferin (CBF), corymbiferin-1-O-glucoside (CBF-1-O-glc), bellidifolin (BDF) and campestroside. Multivariate statistical analyses showed relatively low variability among populations according to secondary metabolite content. However, some pharmacologically important compounds were found in higher amounts in a few populations, which could be useful for conservation and future biotechnological procedures. Full article

Establishing pesticide safety management for agricultural products necessitates accurate pesticide analysis at analytical laboratories. Proficiency testing is regarded an effective method for quality control. Herein, proficiency tests were carried out for residual pesticide analysis in laboratories. All samples satisfied the homogeneity and stability criteria of the ISO 13528 standard. The obtained results were analyzed using the ISO 17043 z-score evaluation. Both individual pesticide and multiresidue proficiency evaluations were performed, and the proportion of z-scores within the ±2 range (“Satisfactory” rating) obtained for seven pesticides ranged 79–97%. Of the laboratories, 83% were classified as Category A using the category A/B method, and these also received AAA ratings in the triple-A evaluations. Furthermore, 66–74% of the laboratories were rated “Good” via five evaluation methods based on their z-scores. The sum of weighted z-scores and scaled sum of squared z-scores were considered as the most suitable evaluation techniques, as they compensated for the drawbacks of good results and corrected the poor results. To identify the main factors affecting laboratory analysis, the experience of the analyst, sample weight, calibration curve preparation method, and cleanup status were considered. A dispersive solid phase extraction cleanup significantly improved the results (p < 0.01). Full article

Natural populations of Gentiana asclepiadea L., located at two mountainous sites, were HPLC-analyzed regarding the contents of six representative secondary metabolites. The contents of swertiamarin (SWM), gentiopicrin (GP), sweroside (SWZ), mangiferin (MGF), isoorientin (ISOOR), and isovitexin (ISOV) were determined in six populations (three per study site), and separately for aboveground and belowground plant parts. PCA showed a clear separation of four groups according to the contents of the analyzed secondary metabolites. Out of six analyzed compounds, five were present in all samples and only one (SWZ) was found in Golija populations (belowground parts) but not in Vlasina populations, and its presence can be indicative of the geolocation of populations. Clear separation of groups was mostly affected by the different contents of chemical compounds in plant parts (aboveground versus belowground) and by the differences related to population origin (higher content of SWM and GP in belowground parts of individuals from Vlasina populations and higher content of MGF and ISOOR of individuals from Golija populations). The results of this study contribute to the spatiochemical profiling of G. asclepiadea populations and a better understanding of inter- and intrapopulation variability of pharmacologically important compounds.
