Background: Acquired brain injury (ABI) often disrupts binocular vision, causing deviations on the cover test and reduced stereopsis that impair functional visual performance. This study investigated the effects of a dichoptic vision therapy protocol—based on an immersive virtual reality (VR) system—on visual field parameters, oculomotor reaction times, and self-reported visual symptoms in adults with ABI. Methods: In a controlled parallel-group design, adult ABI patients (median age 51 years) were assigned to an experimental group (dichoptic VR therapy) or a control group. Six sessions of visual therapy were performed. Primary outcomes included perimetric visual field indices and oculomotor reaction times; the secondary outcome was the Brain Injury Vision Symptom Survey (BIVSS) score. Etiology (stroke vs. traumatic brain injury) was recorded. Results: No statistically significant improvements were found in perimetric visual field indices (p > 0.05), except for a slight gain in the top-right quadrant in the experimental group. Reaction times did not differ significantly between groups. However, the experimental group reported a greater reduction in visual symptoms as measured by the BIVSS. Patients with traumatic brain injury exhibited better functional improvement, particularly in the top-left quadrant (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Dichoptic VR-based therapy did not restore perimetric field losses in ABI patients but reduced visual symptoms and may enhance functional adaptation of residual vision rather than structural recovery. The therapeutic response varied by etiology, favoring traumatic brain injury. Larger, longer trials integrating objective and subjective measures, including neuroimaging, are warranted. Full article

As the three-phase four-bridge inverter (3P4B) can effectively compensate for the unbalanced three-phase loads in the grid, it is an important converter option for distributed generation grid connection. As in a three-phase three-bridge inverter (3P3B), the wide variation in grid impedance also poses instability issues for 3P4B. This issue has been well-addressed for 3P3B, which can be seen as a differential-mode circuit. However, 3P4B has an extra common-mode circuit, and the solution to the instability problem has not been investigated so far. To address this issue, this paper first analyzes the mechanism of 3P4B common-mode circuit instability and discovers its stability range difference from its differential-mode circuit. Then, an equivalent control delay compensator is independently introduced into the common-mode loop, which extends its stable range. This paper also conducts a detailed analysis of the control delay compensator’s impacts on the common-mode control loop and proposes a quantitative design method for the compensator accordingly. Experimental results validate that the proposed method effectively mitigates common-mode loop instability even under a wide range of grid impedance variations. Full article

Spirulina (Limnospira platensis) has gained attention as a functional feed additive in animal nutrition. However, its effects on the cecal microbiota and systemic metabolic responses in lambs remain unclear. Here, twelve 5-month-old male Hu lambs were randomly assigned to a control group (Control) or a Spirulina-supplemented group (SPI; 1.5% of dietary dry matter) and fed for 60 days (n = 6 per group). We measured serum biochemical indices, energy-metabolism variables, and immune and antioxidant parameters and characterized the cecal microbiota using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Spirulina supplementation increased serum triglycerides (TG), glucose (GLU), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (p < 0.05). In the cecum, α-diversity indices were lower in SPI than in Control (p < 0.01), and Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) indicated distinct community separation between groups (p < 0.01). Spearman correlation analyses further linked dominant genera to host metabolic and antioxidant traits. Collectively, Spirulina altered lamb metabolism and antioxidant status and reshaped the cecal microbial community, with microbial shifts associated with changes in serum indices. Full article

Bounce-Based Aerobic Exercise Improves Postpartum Mood: A Large-Scale Pre–Post Study

Background: Postpartum mental health challenges are increasingly recognized as a major public health concern, particularly during the early months after childbirth when emotional vulnerability is heightened. Although aerobic exercise is known to be associated with mood improvement, few large-scale studies have examined the acute psychological effects of a single exercise session in postpartum women, especially in contexts where environmental barriers restrict opportunities for physical activity. Methods: A total of 628 postpartum mothers (2–6 months postpartum) residing in a snowbound region of northern Japan participated in a single-session indoor bounce-based aerobic exercise program. Mood states were assessed immediately before and after the session using the validated Japanese short-form Profile of Mood States (POMS). Open-ended comments were also collected and analyzed thematically. Results: Paired analyses demonstrated significant acute improvements in key mood domains. Tension–Anxiety decreased (mean difference −7.91, 95% CI [−8.82, −7.00]; d = −0.68), and Anger–Hostility decreased (−4.61, 95% CI [−5.40, −3.82]; d = −0.45), while Vigor increased (11.82, 95% CI [10.47, 13.17]; d = 0.69) (all p < 0.001). In contrast, Depression–Dejection showed no significant change (−0.33, 95% CI [−1.30, 0.64]; p = 0.613). Conclusions: A single session of indoor bounce-based aerobic exercise was associated with immediate improvements in emotional well-being among postpartum women, particularly in anxiety-related and activation-related mood states. Because this exercise modality can be performed safely at home and is well suited to regions where outdoor physical activity is restricted, it may represent an accessible strategy for supporting postpartum mental health. Future research should examine longitudinal effects, controlled designs, and optimal program frequency to determine sustained benefits. Full article

Background/Objectives: Prostate cancer (PC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed malignancies globally; depending on the treatment strategy used, erectile dysfunction (ED) is a frequently reported adverse outcome among PC patients. The current study evaluated ED prevalence among Pakistani PC patients and its effects on physical, psychological, and social well-being, aiming to address critical gaps in survivorship care for this population. Methods: A cross-sectional, multicenter, observational, questionnaire-based study was conducted in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan, from February to April 2025. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among PC patients was measured using the Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36), while ED prevalence and severity were assessed by the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) instrument. Results: Among N = 400 PC patients, surgical treatments predominated (radical prostatectomy: 61.0%; n = 244), while hormonal (androgen-deprivation therapy: 31.5%; n = 126) and chemotherapy (23.3%; n = 93) were also commonly utilized. ED experience was high among PC patients in the erectile function (40.8%; n = 163) and in the intercourse satisfaction (45.0%; n = 180) domains; these showed moderately strong and significant positive correlations across all SF-36 domains, particularly physical functioning (r = 0.52; p < 0.001) and social functioning (r = 0.49; p < 0.001). Regression analysis confirmed sexual function domains explained 60% of HRQoL variance (adjusted R2 = 0.60). Conclusions: This study reveals high rates of treatment-related ED—and its biopsychosocial impact–among Pakistani PC patients, with significant negative impacts on HRQoL. The findings underscore the urgent need to integrate sexual health management into standard oncological care practices to improve holistic patient outcomes. Full article

This article proposes a redefinition of scientific authorship under conditions of algorithmic mediation. We shift the discussion from the ontological dichotomy of “tool versus author” to an operationalizable epistemology of contribution. Building on the philosophical triad of instrumentality—intervention, representation, and hermeneutics—we argue that contemporary AI systems (notably large language models, LLMs) exceed the role of a merely “mute” accelerator of procedures. They now participate in the generation of explanatory structures, the reframing of research problems, and the semantic reconfiguration of the knowledge corpus. In response, we formulate the AI-AUTHorship framework, which remains compatible with an anthropocentric legal order while recognizing and measuring AI’s cognitive participation. We introduce TraceAuth, a protocol for tracing cognitive chains of reasoning, and AIEIS (AI epistemic impact score), a metric that stratifies contributions along the axes of procedural (P), semantic (S), and generative (G) participation. The threshold between “support” and “creation” is refined through a battery of operational tests (alteration of the problem space; causal/counterfactual load; independent reproducibility without AI; interpretability and traceability). We describe authorship as distributed epistemic authorship (DEA): a network of people, artifacts, algorithms, and institutions in which AI functions as a nonsubjective node whose contribution is nonetheless auditable. The framework closes the gap between the de facto involvement of AI and de jure norms by institutionalizing a regime of “recognized participation,” wherein transparency, interpretability, and reproducibility of cognitive trajectories become conditions for acknowledging contribution, whereas human responsibility remains nonnegotiable. This study aims to enhance the value of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO supply chain by integrating multi-elemental and isotopic profiling with chemometric analysis. The objective is to establish a pilot study for origin authentication, supporting strategic, managerial, and regulatory decision-making for stakeholders in the wine sector. Wine and soil samples from producers in the Abruzzo region were analyzed for 63 elements and selected isotopic ratios using HR-ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS. Exploratory data analysis, including PCA and clustering, was employed to investigate intrinsic data structure. Variable selection techniques identified the most discriminant markers, and multiple classification models were tested to assess producer-level differentiation. The combined elemental and isotopic dataset showed strong intrinsic structure. Four variables—Mo, 208Pb/206Pb, P, and 87Sr/86Sr—emerged as key discriminants. Quadratic Discriminant Analysis and Artificial Neural Networks achieved 100% accuracy in classifying samples by producer. The results demonstrate that integrating multi-elemental and isotopic data with chemometric tools offers a pilot approach to authenticate wine origin and enhance transparency across the PDO supply chain. Beyond scientific innovation, this study provides a pilot decision support model that can strengthen competitive differentiation, regulatory compliance, and sustainable territorial development, highlighting opportunities for digital transformation in PDO management. Pathogenic and Clinical Relevance of Serum IL-17A and TNF-α in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Cytokines IL-17A and TNF-α have been implicated in the dysregulated immune responses that characterize SLE, with potential relevance to specific organ involvement. This study aimed to assess their serum levels in SLE patients and to explore potential correlations with clinical, biological, and immunological features, as well as with disease activity and damage scores. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 88 SLE patients diagnosed according to the 2012 SLICC classification criteria and 87 controls matched by sex and age. Serum IL-17A and TNF-α levels were quantified using ELISA. Clinical and laboratory data were collected, including SLEDAI for disease activity and the SLICC/ACR Damage Index for cumulative organ damage. No significant differences were observed in serum IL-17A levels between SLE patients and healthy controls, whereas serum TNF-α levels differed significantly between the two groups. Serum IL-17A levels were significantly associated with cutaneous involvement (p = 0.036) and the inflammatory syndrome (p = 0.049). TNF-α levels were also significantly elevated in patients with cutaneous manifestations (p = 0.050). A positive correlation was observed between TNF-α levels and cumulative organ damage, as assessed by the SLICC/ACR Damage Index (r = 0.36, p < 0.001; R2 = 0.13), and levels were particularly higher in patients with malignancies (p = 0.032). A positive correlation was observed between IL-17A and TNF-α levels. No significant associations were found between serum levels of IL-17A or TNF-α and demographic factors, disease activity (SLEDAI), immunological and biological markers. Both IL-17A and TNF-α were significantly associated with cutaneous involvement in SLE patients, supporting their implication in skin-related inflammatory processes. IL-17A was additionally linked to the presence of an inflammatory syndrome. TNF-α levels correlated with cumulative organ damage and were elevated in patients with malignancies, suggesting that patients with higher TNF-α accumulated significantly more irreversible organ damage over time. No meaningful associations were observed between cytokine levels and demographic characteristics, disease duration, treatment or global SLE activity. Full article

In this study, semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogels based on methacrylated dextran and native inulin were designed as biodegradable carriers for the colon-specific delivery of uracil as a model antitumor compound. The hydrogels were synthesized via free-radical polymerization, using diethylene glycol diacrylate (DEGDA) as a crosslinking agent at varying concentrations (5, 7.5, and 10 wt%), and their structural, thermal, and biological properties were systematically evaluated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed successful crosslinking and physical incorporation of uracil through hydrogen bonding. Concurrently, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed an increase in glass transition temperature (Tg) with increasing crosslinking density (149, 153, and 156 °C, respectively). Swelling studies demonstrated relaxation-controlled, first-order swelling kinetics under physiological conditions (pH 7.4, 37 °C) and high gel fraction values (84.75, 91.34, and 94.90%, respectively), indicating stable network formation. SEM analysis revealed that the hydrogel morphology strongly depended on crosslinking density and drug incorporation, with increasing crosslinker content leading to a more compact and wrinkled structure. Uracil loading further modified the microstructure, promoting the formation of discrete crystalline domains within the semi-IPN hydrogels, indicative of physical drug entrapment. All formulations exhibited high encapsulation efficiencies (>86%), which increased with increasing crosslinker content, consistent with the observed gel fraction values. Simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion showed negligible drug release under gastric conditions and controlled release in the intestinal phase, primarily governed by crosslinking density. Antimicrobial assessment against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, used as an initial or indirect indicator of cytotoxic potential, revealed no inhibitory activity, suggesting low biological reactivity at the screening level. Overall, the results indicate that DEGDA-crosslinked dextran/inulin semi-interpenetrating (semi-IPN) hydrogels represent promising carriers for colon-targeted antitumor drug delivery. Full article

Heavy metal pollution in forest and agroforestry soils represents a persistent environmental challenge with direct implications for ecosystem functioning, food security, and human health. In tropical and subtropical regions, intense weathering, rapid organic matter turnover, and dynamic redox conditions strongly modulate metal mobility, bioavailability, and long-term soil vulnerability. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the sources, biogeochemical mechanisms, ecological impacts, monitoring approaches, and restoration strategies associated with heavy metal contamination in forest and agroforestry systems, with particular emphasis on tropical landscapes. We examine natural and anthropogenic metal inputs, highlighting how atmospheric deposition, legacy contamination, land-use practices, and soil management interact with mineralogy, organic matter, and hydrology to control metal fate. Key processes governing metal behavior include sorption and complexation, Fe–Mn redox cycling, pH-dependent solubility, microbial mediation, and rhizosphere dynamics. The ecological consequences of contamination are discussed in terms of soil health degradation, plant physiological stress, disruption of ecosystem services, and risks of metal transfer to food chains in managed systems. The review also evaluates integrated monitoring frameworks that combine field-based soil analyses, biomonitoring, and geospatial technologies, while acknowledging methodological limitations and scale-dependent uncertainties. Finally, restoration and remediation strategies—ranging from phytotechnologies and soil amendments to engineered Technosols—are assessed in relation to their effectiveness, scalability, and relevance for long-term functional recovery. Background: The relationship between alcohol consumption and vascular function remains controversial. This study aimed to examine the association between total alcohol intake, type of alcoholic beverage, and arterial stiffness across different vascular territories in young Spanish adults, with special attention to sex-specific patterns. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Using consecutive non-probability sampling, 501 participants (222 men and 279 women) aged 18–34 years, were recruited from the urban population of Salamanca. Alcohol consumption was assessed using a standardized questionnaire and quantified in grams per week overall and by different types of drinks (wine, beer or spirits drinks). Arterial stiffness was evaluated using pulse pressure (PP), carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV), brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (ba-PWV), cardio–ankle vascular index (CAVI), and central augmentation index corrected to a heart rate of 75 beats per minute (CAIx75). Results: The mean age of the sample was 26.58 ± 4.40 years, and was significantly higher in men than in women (27.04 ± 4.41 vs. 26.22 ± 4.37 years; p = 0.040). The mean values for vascular function parameters were as follows: PP 42.86 ± 8.45 mmHg, cf-PWV 5.60 ± 1.29 m/s, ba-PWV 38 10.80 ± 1.01 m/s, CAVI 6.13 ± 0.75, and CAIx75 7.71 ± 19.74. Participants reporting alcohol consumption showed lower ba-PWV values compared with abstainers, while no consistent associations were observed for central arterial stiffness parameters. In sex-stratified analyses, higher total alcohol intake (β = −0.002, 95% CI: −0.004–−0.001), as well as beer (β = −0.004, 95% CI: −0.007–−0.001), and spirit consumption (β = −0.004, 95% CI: −0.006–−0.001), were inversely associated with ba-PWV exclusively in men. In women, spirit consumption was positively associated with CAIx75 (β = 0.044, 95% CI: 0.006–0.081). The magnitude of the observed differences in ba-PWV was modest and occurred in a predominantly low-risk population. Conclusions: In young adults, alcohol consumption was associated with differences in peripheral arterial stiffness, primarily reflected by ba-PWV, with clear sex-specific patterns. These findings do not support a causal or protective effect of alcohol consumption and should be interpreted cautiously due to the cross-sectional design of the study. The results highlight the importance of considering sex and vascular territory when evaluating early markers of vascular aging in young populations. Full article

Green chemistry, achieved by using water as a reaction medium, has several potential applications. In this work, a number of water-soluble Rh(III)–THP complexes, [Rh(III)Cl3(OH)(THP)2] (1), [Rh(III)Cl2(OH)(THP)3] (2), [Rh(III)Cl(OH)(THP)4]+ (3), [Rh(III)Cl(OH)(en)(THP)2]+ (4a), [Rh(I)(en)(THP)2]+ (4b) and [Rh(III)(en)2Cl2]Cl (5) (where THP = P(CH2OH)3), were generated in aqueous media by controlling the reaction at different molar ratios of RhCl3/THP/en (en: ethylenediamine). These complexes were fully characterized in situ by 31P NMR spectroscopy, base titration and by X-ray crystallography for the solid compound (4). The catalytic hydrogenation reactivities of freshly prepared complexes (1–5) were tested in situ with the selected substrate of 3,4-dimethoxystyrene under the same experimental conditions; the related catalytic reactivities are discussed in detail. Immune checkpoint inhibitors are essential treatments for many oncologic diseases, but with well-known immune-related adverse events, such as acute interstitial nephritis (ICI-AIN). We investigated novel potential biomarkers that could assist in the diagnosis and follow-up of this condition and that are related to the active pathogenic pathways involved. We measured urinary soluble PD-1, PD-L1 and PD-L2, as well as chemokines CXCL5, CXCL9, CXCL10, CXCL11, CCL2, CCL3, CCL5 and cytokines IL-6 and IL-12p70 performing a Luminex assay in urine from patients with ICI-AIN (n = 35) and compared them with patients with AIN from other causes (non-ICI AIN) (n = 29) and ATN (n = 26). We found that CXCL5, CXCL9, CXCL10, CXCL11, CCL5 and IL-6 were higher in patients with ICI-AIN than in those with ATN, and all of them but CXCL9 and IL-6 were also higher in patients with ICI-AIN compared with non-ICI AIN. We also determined these molecules at follow-up for ICI-AIN patients (40 samples from 22 patients) and found that concentrations of CXCL9, CXCL10, CXCL11 and CCL2 decreased after treatment. The decrease of CXCL9 and CXCL10 correlated with greater kidney function recovery at one-year follow-up. These molecules could serve as noninvasive biomarkers and may aid fine patient monitoring. Background and Objectives: Abortion on request, contraceptive access barriers, and mental health may jointly shape women’s quality of life (QoL). We examined how abortion history, structural barriers, and psychosocial factors relate to modern contraceptive use, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and QoL among women attending a Romanian tertiary center. Methods: We conducted a single-center observational study combining retrospective chart review with an online survey of 200 women aged 18–45 years. Validated instruments (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9], Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 [GAD-7], World Health Organization Five-Item Well-Being Index [WHO-5], and World Health Organization Quality of Life–BREF [WHOQOL-BREF]) and indices of access barriers, perceived stigma, and social support were used. Analyses included multivariable regression, structural equation modelling, latent class analysis, and moderation analysis. Results: Overall, 55.0% of women reported ≥1 abortion on request. Compared with those without abortion history, they were older (31.2 ± 4.9 vs. 26.8 ± 4.8 years, p < 0.001), more often had lower levels of education (51.8% vs. 33.3%, p = 0.013), and were less likely to use modern contraception at last intercourse (52.7% vs. 71.1%, p = 0.012). PHQ-9 (8.8 ± 4.0 vs. 7.3 ± 4.3) and GAD-7 (7.0 ± 3.2 vs. 5.7 ± 3.4) scores were higher (both p = 0.010), while QoL was lower (55.4 ± 8.1 vs. 59.5 ± 7.8, p < 0.001). In adjusted models, access barriers (OR per point = 1.3, 95% CI 1.1–1.6), but not abortion history, predicted non-use of modern contraception. QoL correlated strongly with PHQ-9 (r = −0.6) and WHO-5 (r = 0.5; both p < 0.001). Latent class analysis identified a “high-barrier, distressed, abortion-experienced” profile with the poorest mental health and QoL. Conclusions: Structural access barriers and current depressive and anxiety symptoms, rather than abortion history alone, were key correlates of contraceptive gaps and reduced QoL, underscoring the need for integrated reproductive and mental health care. Achieving sustainable land restoration in southern Chinese ionic rare earth mining areas remains a significant challenge due to the extended duration and low efficiency of conventional remediation approaches. Although the hyperaccumulator Dicranopteris pedata possesses a remarkable capacity for rare earth element (REE) enrichment, a significant knowledge gap exists regarding how to effectively combine exogenous organic acids with agronomic practices like clipping to enhance its remediation efficiency in an environmentally sustainable manner. Crucially, the potential environmental risks associated with such synergistic strategies have not been systematically evaluated, hindering their practical application. To address this, our study focused on Dicranopteris pedata and employed integrated pot and soil column leaching experiments to systematically analyze the effects of different concentrations of citric acid and tartaric acid on REE migration and transformation within the soil–plant system. The results demonstrated that exogenous organic acids significantly reduced soil pH and promoted the conversion of REEs from the residual to the exchangeable fraction. Specifically, the 20 mmol·kg−1 citric acid treatment increased the proportion of exchangeable REEs by 43.46%. Furthermore, organic acid treatments significantly altered the REE uptake patterns in Dicranopteris pedata, inhibiting the translocation and accumulation of REEs in the aboveground tissues. Soil column leaching experiments revealed that citric acid drove the migration of REEs to deeper soil layers, with the concentration peaking at 288.33 mg·kg−1 at a depth of 6–8 cm; concomitantly, the REE content in the leachate reached its maximum on the 5th day. This study demonstrates that the combined application of 20 mmol·kg−1 citric acid and 100% clipping management increased the annual REE accumulation in Dicranopteris pedata to 4.85 g·m−2, thereby significantly shortening the theoretical remediation period from 25.0 years in the control to 12.1 years. Soil column leaching experiments indicated no significant secondary pollution risk associated with this strategy. These findings provide a feasible, low-risk, and sustainable technical strategy for the synergistically enhanced remediation of REE-contaminated soils, offering a promising path for ecological restoration and sustainable land management in degraded mining ecosystems.
