This study examines how Ontario’s Health and Physical Education curriculum addresses the needs of young adults with disabilities. A total of 54 individuals aged 18–35 years old with developmental, learning, or physical disabilities who had completed secondary school in Ontario participated in a cross-sectional mixed-methods survey. Participants were recruited through disability-focused community networks and a university psychology participant pool. They completed the Sex Education subscale of the Sexual Knowledge, Experience, Feelings and Needs Scale, a 35-item sexual knowledge questionnaire, and open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests; qualitative responses were examined using thematic analysis. Participants reported limited factual knowledge, minimal classroom representation, and heavy reliance on independent learning. Barriers included inaccessible materials, teacher discomfort, and the absence of disability narratives in sexuality units. Findings point to three priorities: revising curriculum content, expanding educator training, and creating disability-affirming resources. These measures will help ensure comprehensive and rights-based sexuality education that supports the autonomy and well-being of students with disabilities. Full article

Person-to-Person Transmission During a Norovirus Outbreak in a Korean Kindergarten: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Objectives: Norovirus outbreaks occur in densely populated environments, such as long-term care facilities, hospitals, and schools. On 22 October 2022, an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis was reported at a kindergarten in Korea. An epidemiologic investigation was conducted to identify the source of the infection and prevent further spread. Methods: Rectal swab and environmental samples were collected for bacterial and viral testing. A retrospective cohort study was conducted among 114 kindergarteners at the kindergarten. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess associations of contact with the primary case, as well as food and water consumption. Results: Of the kindergarteners, 28 out of 114 (24.6%) met the case definition. The primary case occurred on 19 October, and subsequent cases began on 21 October. Sharing the same four-year-old class as the primary case (RR, 2.56; 95% CI, 1.35–4.87), being in the same regular class (RR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.27–4.41), being on the same floor during after-school class (RR, 3.49; 95% CI, 1.74–7.00), and attending the same English class (RR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.05–3.72) were statistically significant. Consumption of drinking water on the third floor and fourth floor on 20 October had significantly higher and lower RRs, respectively. Norovirus was detected in 9 out of 18 rectal swab samples (50.0%). Conclusions: This norovirus outbreak at the kindergarten was presumed to have been caused by person-to-person transmission from the primary case. Isolation and restriction of symptomatic children in kindergartens should be thoroughly implemented. Additionally, enhanced surveillance among family members of affected individuals is necessary to prevent further outbreaks. Full article

Background/Objectives: Perceived physical literacy (PPL) appears to be a relevant strategy for combating the prevalent sedentary lifestyle among young people. Therefore, understanding their PPL levels will facilitate the implementation of appropriate strategies for this purpose. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the differences in PPL considering the sex dimension (i.e., males and females) and the age-group (i.e., early compulsory secondary education, late compulsory secondary education and baccalaureate). Methods: Seven-hundred-and-four Spanish students (age = 14.3 ± 1.6 years old) belonging to three different Spanish secondary schools voluntarily participated in this study. To assess adolescents’ perceptions of their physical literacy, the Spanish Adolescents’ Perceived Physical Literacy Assessment (S-PPLI) was used. This instrument consists of nine items equally distributed across three categories: self-perception and self-confidence, self-expression and communication with others, and knowledge and understanding. Results: Males obtained higher scores in all the indicators of PPL, except for items 1, 8 and 9, compared to their female counterparts (p < 0.05), while the oldest age-group reported higher scores in the indicators of knowledge and understanding category compared to students in the early years of compulsory secondary education (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Programs based on increasing the PPL should be implemented specifically for females. Also, similar programs must be included into scholar curriculums from the beginning of secondary education, with the aim of promoting improvements in the health and physical condition of Spanish adolescents. Background/Objectives: Educational background is an aspect of socio-economic status, that may be associated with higher caries risk. This study aimed to investigate differences in caries prevalence between different school types for older adolescents in Greifswald, Germany. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected as part of compulsory dental school examinations between 2020 and 2023. Oral health status was assessed according to WHO criteria by six calibrated examiners and reported as mean D3MFT (D3: dentin caries, M: missing, F: filled, SD/±: standard deviation). To compare educational backgrounds, the adolescents were divided into two groups according to their age and type of school (11–15 and 16–18 years old). Results: The study included 5816 adolescents (48.7% females) with a mean D3MFT of 0.65 (Q1–Q3: 0–1); 73.8% were clinically caries-free, having D3MFT = 0, confirming the polarization in caries experience with 2.5 ± 2.13 SaC index. The logistic regression model showed a significantly increased Odds Ratio for having caries in relation to age, being male, having plaque or gingivitis (p < 0.005). There were significant differences in caries experience and prevalence between school types, where high schools had the lowest D3MFT values in both age groups (0.39 ± 1.17 and 0.64 ± 1.49, respectively). The highest D3MFT values were in schools for special educational needs in younger adolescents (1.12 ± 1.9) and in vocational schools in older adolescents (1.63 ± 2.55). Conclusions: In a low-caries-risk population, there were significant differences in caries experience and prevalence among adolescents in different school types. Prevention strategies should aim to reduce the polarization in caries across different educational backgrounds in late adolescence. Full article

In this study, we investigate the learning opportunities offered in the enactment of a finger pattern activity with numbers exceeding 10 that shows how smaller units can be composed into larger units. Research on early arithmetic learning shows the importance of students understanding numbers as composed units and making use of arithmetic strategies that are based on unitizing rather than single-unit counting. The Many Hands activity was enacted in an intervention program focusing on 6-year-olds’ learning of structuring numbers and number relations during one school year, conducted in collaboration with teachers. The activity, with numbers exceeding 10, was enacted at the end of the program. Video observations of 19 teaching episodes in which the activity was used were analyzed using the variation theory of learning. The analysis focused on identifying which aspects of numbers were made visible for students to discern and how finger patterns became a tool for structuring numbers and number relations. Five aspects were made visible in the enactments of the Many Hands activity: (i) small numbers as composed units; (ii) units within units; (iii) units within units and new, larger units; (iv) relationships between units in the number system; and (v) place value. In 12 of the 19 episodes, the teacher or the students used their fingers to show and see the structure of numbers in relation to the identified aspects. Full article

Background and objectives: Neurosurgical intervention on the newborn’s developing brain is a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). These patients necessarily require regular, coordinated follow-up. The ventricular subgaleal shunt (VSGS) technique has been used since 2013 at Rouen University Hospital. Like any change in practice, this technique must be evaluated. In this paper, we describe the population of patients with hydrocephalus treated by VSGS, the complications associated with the procedure, and the outcome of these patients at two and six years old. Methods: This study was an observational, descriptive, retrospective, single-center study. Children included were those less than three months old with hydrocephalus treated by VSGS at Rouen University Hospital from January 2013 to December 2023. Data were anonymized and collected using EDSaN software. A descriptive analysis was performed. Results: Thirty-two patients were included in our study. Of these, 22 (69%) were born prematurely; 16 (50%) of these 22 had postnatal intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) requiring treatment with VSGS. A total of three patients (13.6%) died within the first year of life; twenty-four patients (75%) required definitive shunting. Twenty-two patients were over 2 years old in our study. Only 10 of them acquired the ability to walk (45%). Cerebral palsy was present in 10 (45%) patients. Fifteen patients were over 6 years old; thirteen (87%) attended school, but six (40%) had special needs (the need of an assistant, or part-time schedule). In our study, only 24 patients (82%) were followed by a pediatrician trained in neurodevelopment at Rouen University Hospital, and 27 (93%) were followed by a neurosurgeon. Conclusions: This study describes all patients with hydrocephalus treated by VSGS at Rouen University Hospital between January 2013 and December 2023, as well as their complications and their neurological outcomes. The follow-up of these children at risk of NDDs is essential. Full article

MIH and Cavities as Markers of Oral Health Inequality in Children from Southwest Andalusia (Spain)

Introduction: Dental caries and molar–incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) are prevalent conditions affecting children’s oral health, with functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial implications. In Spain, previous studies have highlighted geographic and sociodemographic disparities in their distribution, particularly among rural and migrant populations. Objective: To characterise oral health status, in terms of caries and MIH, among 6–7-year-old children from the towns of Palos de la Frontera, Mazagón, and San Bartolomé. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 229 children recruited from public primary schools. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, and behavioural data were collected through clinical examination and interview. Statistical analysis included univariate and multivariate logistic regression. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Huelva. Results: The prevalence of caries (DMFT ≥ 1) was 53.3%, with mean DMFT and dft indices of 1.78 and 0.31, respectively. MIH affected 32.8% of the cohort, with a predominance in the first permanent molars (teeth 36 and 26). Multivariate analysis identified independent predictors of caries: African (OR = 7.47; 95% CI: 2.84–23.8) and European (OR = 4.56; 95% CI: 1.26–22.3) parental origin, poor oral hygiene (OR = 3.07; 95% CI: 1.60–6.03), and the presence of MIH (OR = 3.20; 95% CI: 1.64–6.42). The municipality of San Bartolomé was associated with a higher risk of MIH (OR = 2.90; 95% CI: 1.21–7.45). Conclusions: The high prevalence of caries and MIH in the Condado-Campiña district, exceeding national averages, reflects oral health inequities linked to social determinants (migrant origin, locality) and clinical factors (MIH, oral hygiene). Targeted preventive interventions are urgently needed in high-risk populations, including culturally tailored education and policies ensuring equitable access to dental care services. Full article

This paper examines the importance of ‘education outside the classroom’ (EOtC) in an Australian secondary school. The primary aim was to develop a sense of belonging, build resilience, and enhance wellbeing in female students. This study investigated two cohorts of Year 9 students (aged 14–15 yrs) who participated in a four-week residential EOtC pilot program. The first cohort (Wave 1; N = 58) undertook the program alongside (N = 39) boys. The second cohort was single-sex girls (Wave 2; N = 28). A mixed-methods research design was implemented to inform experiences of students, parents, and staff and to triangulate inferences drawn from the data. Quantitative data was gained from pre- and post-program surveys with students and parents, whilst qualitative data was gathered from student focus groups, staff, and parents through semi-structured interviews to assess more nuanced impacts. School belonging was measured using the PISA six-item scale. Academic buoyancy was quantified using the four-item Academic Buoyancy Scale. Self-efficacy, peer relations, and resilience were evaluated by employing the 34-item Adolescent Girls’ Resilience Scale. The findings revealed significant improvements in students’ sense of belonging, including higher levels of school belonging than reported Australia-wide averages for 15-year-olds. Despite students’ mean academic buoyancy scores being more than a point lower than reported baseline scores for Australian high school students, it was promising to see a modest increase following the EOtC program. In conclusion, EOtC is a potent vehicle for developing a sense of belonging, enhancing resilience, and equipping students to deal with academic challenges. Full article

Promoting sustainable lifestyles through early interventions in schools is increasingly recognized as a critical component of public health and educational policy. Sustainable development, as outlined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education), calls for integrating health-promoting behaviors into all aspects of life, including school settings. Active breaks (ABs) could represent a promising strategy to counteract these effects. This study assessed the impact of ABs on the attention of fifth-grade children, aiming to promote both immediate cognitive benefits and long-term health. A total of 32 primary children (age, 9.34 ± 0.77 years old), divided into an experimental group (AB sessions) and a control group, participated in this study. Attention and concentration were measured using the D2-R Test, while processing speed and distraction-related behaviors were tracked. Additionally, questionnaires assessed children’s and teachers’ perceptions. After five weeks, the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in attention (p < 0.05), especially after high intensity ABs at 12:00. This study suggested the effectiveness of ABs as a tool for improving children’s attention and behavior in primary schools. The findings suggest that integrating physical activity breaks not only enhances cognitive function but also contributes to sustainable educational practices by fostering better learning environments and supporting children’s health and well-being. In this post-digital age, writing assessment has been markedly influenced by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing the role of automated formative feedback in supporting second language (L2) writing. This study investigates how Norwegian teachers use an AI-driven automated feedback tool, the Essay Assessment Technology (EAT), in process writing for the first time. Framed by the second and third-order barriers framework, we looked at teachers’ beliefs and the design level changes that they made in their teaching. Data were collected in Autumn 2022, during the testing of EAT’s first prototype. Teachers were first introduced to EAT in a workshop. A total of 3 English as a second language teachers from different schools were informants in this study. Teachers then used EAT in the classroom with their 9th-grade students (13 years old). Through individual teacher interviews, this descriptive qualitative study explores teachers’ perceptions, user experiences, and pedagogical decisions when incorporating EAT into their practices. The findings indicate that teachers’ beliefs about technology and its role in student learning, as well as their views on students’ responsibilities in task completion, significantly influence their instructional choices. Additionally, teachers not only adopt AI-driven tools but are also able to reflect and solve complex teaching and learning activities in the classroom, which demonstrates that these teachers have applied design thinking processes in integrating technology in their teaching. Based on the results in this study, we suggest the need for targeted professional development to support effective technology integration. Full article

Can the Components of Physical Fitness Be Linked to Creative Thinking and Fluid Intelligence in Spanish Schoolchildren?

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the components of physical fitness (PF), creativity and fluid intelligence, as well as to determine which components of PF are predictors of the analysed cognitive potential. Material and Methods: A total of 584 Spanish schoolchildren (6−11 years old; age = 8.62 ± 1.77 years) took part in this study. Creativity was assessed using the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) and fluid intelligence through TEA-1. Moreover, PF components were evaluated using a 25 m sprint, handgrip strength, standing long jump and 20 m SRT. Results: Boys exhibited a better PF performance than girls (p range from = < 0.001 to 0.05), as well as higher creativity score (p < 0.001), the fluid intelligence score and QI score (p < 0.05, respectively). Moreover, PF components (CRF, strength and speed) were positively associated with creativity (p range from = < 0.001 to 0.001) and fluid intelligence (p range from = < 0.001 to 0.015). Regression analysis showed that the creativity model explained between 31.4% and 36.6% of the variance (R2 = 0.314−0.366, p < 0.001), while the fluid intelligence model accounted for 25.5% to 33.1% of the variance (R2 = 0.255−0.331, p < 0.001 to 0.001). Conclusions: A positive relationship was found between creativity, fluid intelligence, and PF components. Children with higher PF levels scored better in creativity, with notable differences between boys and girls. These findings highlight the educational value of incorporating structured physical activity into school settings to support both cognitive and physical development. Full article

We assessed economic vulnerability, measured by food insecurity, in relation to primary risk behaviors for adolescent pregnancy among U.S. adolescent females. The survey data for this cross-sectional study were collected from adolescent females (n = 187) recruited from high schools (n = 18) serving low-income communities in Southern California between January 2022 and July 2023. We used crude and adjusted logistic regression models to assess associations between food insecurity and sexual risk behaviors for adolescent pregnancy (e.g., early age of sexual initiation, contraceptive use, condom use), as well as financial dependence on a male partner. Adjusted models included demographics significantly associated with outcome variables. Participants were, on average, 17 years old (SD = 1.48); most participants were born in the U.S. (90.3%) and identified as Latina/Hispanic (85.0%). In crude and adjusted bivariate logistic regression models, compared to participants not reporting food insecurity, participants who reported food insecurity were (1) more likely to report early age at first sex (aOR: 3.6, 95% CI: 1.1–11.7), (2) less likely to report condom use in the previous six months among those sexually active during that timeframe (aOR = 0.2, 95% CI: 0.1–0.6), and (3) more likely to report being financially dependent on a male partner (aOR: 4.2. 95% CI: 1.6–11.3). The findings suggest the importance of addressing economic vulnerability to reduce risk factors for adolescent pregnancy. Full article

Pediatric delirium (PD) is an acute neuropsychiatric syndrome marked by fluctuating disturbances in attention and cognition, frequently observed in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) and associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and long-term cognitive impairment. Despite its clinical significance, PD remains underdiagnosed due to challenges inherent in assessing consciousness and cognition in children at varying developmental stages. Several bedside tools have been developed and validated in recent years, including the Cornell Assessment of Pediatric Delirium (CAPD), PreSchool Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (psCAM-ICU); Pediatric Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (pCAM-ICU), and Sophia Observation Withdrawal Symptoms—Pediatric Delirium Scale (SOS-PD), enhancing early recognition and management of PD in critically ill children. This narrative review explores the historical background, epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical subtypes, diagnostic tools, and current prevention and treatment strategies for PD from newborns to 21 years old. The screening tools available and the integration of non-pharmacological interventions, such as environmental modifications and family-centered care, as well as cautious and selective pharmacological management, are emphasized in this review. Early identification and targeted interventions are essential to mitigate the adverse outcomes associated with PD. Full article

Disparities in Treatment Outcomes for Cannabis Use Disorder Among Adolescents

Background: This study examined treatment outcomes for cannabis use disorder (CUD) among adolescents (12–17 years old) in the United States. Methods: Data from the 2018–2021 Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharges (TEDS-D) included 40,054 adolescents diagnosed with CUD. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and multivariable logistic regression assessed treatment outcomes and factors associated with treatment completion. Results: Only 36.8% of adolescents completed treatment. The most common reasons for not completing treatment were dropping out (28.4%) and transferring to another facility/program (17.0%). Males and Black non-Hispanic adolescents had lower odds of completing treatment (OR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.75–0.84), while Hispanic (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 1.08–1.18), Asian (OR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.3–1.86) and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander adolescents (OR = 2.31, 95%CI: 2.04–2.61) had higher odds of completion compared to their White counterparts. Independent living arrangements, homelessness, arrests in the past 30 days and younger age (<15 years old) decreased the likelihood of treatment completion. Adolescents with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders also had lower completion rates (OR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.77–0.86). Referral from schools/employers and treatment settings were associated with a higher success, particularly with stays of 4–6 months and 7–12 months. Conclusion: This study highlights the need for targeted CUD treatment programs that support at-risk adolescents, especially those experiencing homelessness or facing legal issues. High dropout and transition rates suggest a need for continuity of care and program integration between facilities. Strengthening coordination among public health officials, community organizations, and stakeholders is essential to developing culturally responsive treatment interventions that address social determinants of health, substance use, and mental health in this vulnerable population. Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children are often reported to show deficits on working memory (WM) tasks. These deficits are often characterized as contributing to their struggles to acquire spoken language. Here we report a longitudinal study of a large (N = 103) sample of DHH children who acquired American Sign Language (ASL) as their first language. Using an n-back working memory task, we show significant growth in WM performance across the 7–13-year-old age range. Furthermore, we show that children with early access to ASL from their DHH parents demonstrate faster WM growth and that this group difference is mediated by ASL receptive skills. The data suggest the important role of early access to perceivable natural language in promoting typical WM growth during the middle school years. We conclude that the acquisition of a natural visual–gestural language is sufficient to support the development of WM in DHH children. Further research is required to determine how the timing and quality of ASL exposure may play a role, or whether the effects are driven by acquisition-related corollaries, such as parent–child interactions and maternal stress.
