The evaluation of port service quality (PSQ) is critical for enhancing the competitiveness of container terminals. As technological innovation continues to reshape port operations, PSQ has shifted beyond operational efficiency to deliver smart, reliable, and sustainable services. However, few studies have addressed PSQ in the context of smart port evolution, especially with a focus on container terminals. This study employs a five-dimensional framework, comprising resources, outcomes, process, management, image, and social responsibility, to analyze how PSQ influences customer satisfaction and how customer satisfaction, in turn, affects customer loyalty and referral intention. The data was collected through a survey targeting users of container terminals in five major ports in Korea that undergoing smart port transformation, resulting in a final sample of 324 respondents. The findings reveal that resource-related, process-related, and image- & social responsibility-related PSQ dimensions significantly enhance customer satisfaction, which in turn has a positive effect on customer loyalty and referral intention. In contrast, the outcome-related and management-related dimensions did not have a significant impact on customer satisfaction. The analysis results and various implications discussed in this study are expected to provide helpful information and insights for establishing strategies to enhance the competitiveness of smart ports in the future. This study explored the relationship between strategic leadership and organizational performance, with a particular emphasis on the mediating roles of corporate entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South Korea. A cross-sectional survey design was employed that targeted SMEs with more than three years of operational experience. Of the 532 questionnaires distributed, 112 valid responses were obtained and analyzed using regression analysis. The findings indicated that strategic leadership positively influenced both corporate entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, each of which, in turn, contributed to improved organizational performance. This study also empirically differentiated entrepreneurial behavior into corporate entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship and confirmed that the latter significantly influenced the former. By clarifying the conceptual boundaries between intrapreneurship and corporate entrepreneurship and providing empirical evidence of their dynamic interplay, this study offers a novel theoretical contribution to entrepreneurship research in SMEs. The results underscored the importance of strategic leadership in activating both individual- and organization-level entrepreneurship as critical mechanisms for enhancing organizational performance. These insights have practical implications for establishing sound strategic leadership practices that foster innovative and entrepreneurial behaviors, ultimately leading to organizational performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting digital entrepreneurial orientation, technology absorptive capacity, and digital innovation in business performance. To achieve the purpose of research, digital entrepreneurial orientation, technology absorptive capacity, digital innovation, and business performance (financial and technological performance) were chosen as research variables to explore the relationship effects and medicating effects. Industry type variable was selected to examine moderating effect. Industry type, employees’ numbers, and sales volumes were used as control variables to identify compounding effects of variables. A survey questionnaire was developed, and the proposed model was analyzed to target 122 small and medium venture enterprises (SMEs) in Republic of Korea. Smart PLS 4.0 and SPSS 27.0 were utilized to derive the study results as follows. First, digital entrepreneurial orientation and technology absorptive capacity have a positive influence on digital innovation. Second, digital entrepreneurial orientation has a positive impact on technology absorptive capacity. Finally, digital innovation has a positive effect on financial and technological business performance. The results of this study provide strategic implications for digital innovation and business performance for firms pursuing digital transformation. Therefore, firm managers should prioritize digital entrepreneurial orientation and technology absorptive capacity to improve business performance. Full article

While previous studies have focused on either conventional or digital innovations individually, few have empirically compared the relative impact of these two types of innovation on firm sustainability. Furthermore, few earlier studies have applied a dynamic capabilities perspective and a technology acceptance model (TAM) to understand how innovation strategies affect long-term competitiveness, particularly when targeting venture firms. In this vein, the aim of this study is to identify the factors that play an important role in the sustainability of venture firms and, in particular, to demonstrate which factor has a more positive effect between conventional innovation and digital innovation, which has recently been considered to be crucial. In this study, ‘corporate sustainability’ refers to the ability of venture firms to secure long-term growth potential and operational and resource efficiency, and the ability to maintain a continuous competitive advantage, even in a rapidly changing market environment. This is especially related to the ability of firms to adapt to change, maintain performance, and create new opportunities through innovation using digital technology. Based on the secondary data jointly surveyed by the ‘Korean Ministry of Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises and Startups’ and the ‘Korea Venture Business Association (KOVA)’, a regression analysis of 3000 data collected in 2022 was conducted. According to the result, both conventional and digital innovations are vital factors, but we found that digital-business-model innovation had a stronger impact for venture firm sustainability. This result provides valuable implications for improving the competitiveness and maintaining the sustainability of venture firms. Full article

This study examines how performance pressure influences the complex relationships between job autonomy and critical employee outcomes in contemporary organizations. Specifically, we investigate the relationships between employees’ job autonomy, work engagement, and innovative behavior, while testing the moderating effects of performance pressure perceived within teams. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory and the Job Demand–Resource Model, this research explores the dynamic tension between autonomy and performance demands in organizational settings. Using a two-wave survey design to prevent common method bias, data were collected from 485 employees across diverse organizations in South Korea, representing various industries and organizational levels. The results revealed that job autonomy positively impacts both work engagement and innovative behavior, supporting the fundamental role of autonomy in employee motivation and performance. More importantly, performance pressure perceived within teams had significant moderating effects, weakening the positive relationships between job autonomy and work engagement and innovative behavior. The results of simple slope analyses further confirmed these interaction effects, demonstrating that the benefits of job autonomy were consistently diminished under conditions of high performance pressure. These findings contribute to the organizational behavior and human resource management literature by demonstrating how performance pressure within teams can systematically constrain the benefits of job autonomy in contemporary work environments. For practitioners, our results suggest that organizations should enhance employees’ job autonomy while carefully managing performance pressure within team contexts. To optimize organizational effectiveness, organizations should balance autonomous decision-making with performance expectations, fostering immediate outcomes (work engagement) and long-term capabilities (innovative behavior) in an increasingly competitive business environment. This study aims to examine innovation using an entrepreneurial event model by exploring the effects of failure acceptance, entrepreneurial orientation, and social safety nets on entrepreneurial intention. A survey was conducted with employees in South Korea to collect data, which were analyzed statistically using SPSS version 27.0 and Macro 4.1. The findings indicate that the failure acceptance of South Korean employees does not directly influence their entrepreneurial intention; rather, it has a complete mediation effect through entrepreneurial orientation. This reflects the unique entrepreneurial culture in South Korea, where entrepreneurship is highly emphasized. Additionally, perceptions of social safety nets positively moderate the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial intention. The research highlights the significance and direction of studies in the entrepreneurial sector by considering national cultural differences and emphasizing the interaction between individual psychological traits and environmental factors. Furthermore, it presents South Korea’s distinctive entrepreneurial culture and offers elements that could enhance the entrepreneurial environment, thereby creating practical value. Full article

This study addresses the academic gap in the adoption of generative AI systems by investigating the factors influencing technology acceptance and usage behavior in Korean firms. Although recent advancements in AI are accelerating digital transformation and innovation, empirical research on the adoption of these systems remains scarce. To fill this gap, this study applies the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, surveying 300 employees from both large and small enterprises in South Korea. The findings reveal that effort expectancy and social influence significantly influence employees’ behavioral intention to use generative AI systems. Specifically, effort expectancy plays a critical role in the early stages of adoption, while social influence, including support from supervisors and peers, strongly drives the adoption process. In contrast, performance expectancy and facilitating conditions show no significant impact. The study also highlights the differential effects of age and work experience on behavioral intention and usage behavior. For older employees, social support is a key factor in technology acceptance, whereas employees with more experience exhibit a more positive attitude toward adopting new technologies. Conversely, facilitating conditions are more critical for younger employees. This study contributes to the understanding of the interaction between various factors in AI technology adoption and offers strategic insights for the successful implementation of AI systems in Korean companies. The accelerating climate crisis is driving a rapid increase in interest in climate technologies aimed at overcoming it. However, even if effective technologies emerge, their impact may be hindered without public acceptance. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the factors that influence the acceptance of new climate technologies. This exploratory study investigates the key factors influencing public acceptance and the recommendation of climate technologies in South Korea. Utilizing an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, survey data from 200 participants were analyzed. The study identified that facilitating conditions, innovativeness, social influence, and trust in government are the most significant predictors of public intent to accept or recommend climate technologies. The results highlight the critical role of strategic communication, infrastructure, and public trust in promoting the adoption of climate solutions. Furthermore, qualitative interviews suggest that a shift towards Personally Determined Contributions (PDCs) could empower individuals to become proactive agents in climate action. The study offers valuable insights for policymakers, providing a strategic direction to enhance the public’s engagement with climate technologies and foster a more sustainable future. Full article

In South Korea, the configuration of land parcels within apartment complexes plays a pivotal role in optimizing land use and facility placement. Given the significant impact of land shape on architectural and urban planning outcomes, its analysis is essential. However, studies on land shape have been limited due to the lack of definitive survey criteria. To address these challenges, this study utilized a map application programming interface (API) to gather raw data on apartment complex layouts in South Korea and processed these images using a Python-based image library. An initial analysis involved categorizing the data through K-means clustering. Each cluster’s average image was classified into four distinct groups for comparison with the existing literature. Shape indices were employed to analyze land configurations and assess consistency across classes. These classes were annotated on a parcel level using the Roboflow API, and YOLOv8s-cls was developed to classify the parcels effectively. The evaluation of this model involved calculating accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score from a confusion matrix. The results show a strong correlation between the identified and established classes, with the YOLO model achieving an accuracy of 86% and demonstrating robust prediction capabilities across classes. This confirms the effective typification of land shapes in the studied apartment complexes. This study introduces a methodology for analyzing parcel shapes through machine learning and deep learning. It asserts that this approach transcends the confines of South Korean apartment complexes, extending its applicability to architectural and urban design planning on a global scale. Analyzing land shapes earmarked for construction enables the formulation of diverse design strategies for building placement and external space arrangement. This highlights the potential for innovative design approaches in architectural and urban planning worldwide. Full article

Despite previous studies on public service motivation among public sector employees, the empirical analysis of the influential contextual conditions that moderate public service motivation’s impact on employees’ work attitudes remains inadequate. Given these limitations, this study examines public service motivation’s effects on public employees’ organizational commitment and investigates how Herzberg’s hygiene and motivation factors moderate the relationship between these aspects in the context of South Korea’s central government. For this, we used the data of 1021 public employees from the Differences in the Values of Different Generations of Public Officials and Organizational Innovation Survey, which the Korea Institute of Public Administration had conducted in 2022. We analyzed the data through hierarchical multiple regression analyses, and the results indicated that public service motivation exerts a positive effect on organizational commitment. Specifically, hygiene factors weaken the positive relationship between public service motivation and organizational commitment, while motivation factors have a moderating effect that strengthens said relationship. These findings suggest that, in order to enhance organizational commitment among motivated public employees, human resource management practices should prioritize motivational factors that can enhance job content, meaning, and autonomy instead of solely focusing on providing monetary incentives or improving external conditions. Intertidal macroinvertebrates, such as crabs and mud shrimps, are invertebrates inhabiting the intertidal zone that are sufficiently large to be identified with the naked eye. Most intertidal macroinvertebrates typically construct burrows of various shapes in sediment to protect themselves from environmental extremes, with surface openings that reflect features of their species and body size. Especially circular burrow openings correlate with an organism’s body size; thus, measuring these openings can provide estimates of the organism’s size, weight, growth rate, and biomass. Traditional studies of these organisms have relied on field surveys, which are constrained by time, cost, and logistical limitations. This study introduces an innovative method for measuring the burrow opening diameters of intertidal macroinvertebrates using high-resolution optical images from a portable drone system. By leveraging the reflectance disparity between the sediment and burrow openings, this method facilitates the extraction and sizing of burrow openings. Our methodology was applied to three crab species known for their circular burrow opening: the red-clawed fiddler, the milky fiddler, and the ghost crab. Validation was confirmed through field data from the Mageumri and Sinduri tidal flats, South Korea. The method achieved a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.94 and a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 1.68 mm across a diameter range of 6.21–33.59 mm. These findings suggest the potential of drone remote sensing systems as a non-invasive and efficacious approach for quantifying burrow sizes over extensive intertidal areas, thereby facilitating more accurate biomass estimations and surmounting the limitations of conventional field surveys. Future research could extend this method to additional species and further refine its precision. Full article

In Korea, drivers should come to a complete halt and proceed cautiously when encountering a school bus displaying its red warning lights and other safety features, a requirement that is often disregarded in practice. The reason for this might stem from a lack of awareness about the law, and we set out to investigate whether an innovative lighting system employing road projections or VMS could encourage compliance. We found that while 63% of drivers in surveys indicated they would correctly stop when approaching a stopped school bus, in driving experiments, we found that only 18% of drivers did. Our study also uncovered a knowledge gap, with just 53% to 60% of respondents correctly answering basic about the purpose of existing lighting and laws related to school buses. With on-road experiments, when we introduced road projection systems for enhanced non-connected vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, we found that understanding would increase and compliance could increase by up to 77% (from surveys) and 93% (in road tests); these findings underscore the potential of road projections or potentially VMS as effective V2V tools for enhancing road safety in proximity to school buses. Globally speaking, Asian countries, especially East Asian countries, are facing acute national depopulation situation and severe rural shrinkage development. Based on the continuous surveys of town and village development in Japan, South Korea, and China, this study aims to provide an overview of social policies that have been implemented in the past or more recently in these three countries in response to rural shrinkage, and to outline the core philosophy of these practices to cope with the repercussions. In this paper, we analyze the overall process of rural depopulation and the present features of town and village development in three countries. We subsequently present the social policies over the last few decades and summarize them into four major groups. Furthermore, we highlight that the focus of social policies is not to seek possible ways to reestablish growth but to provide positive support and effective reform to adjust and satisfy the changing needs of towns and villages under the circumstances of shrinking development, including the optimization of public resource allocation, exploring institutional innovation to valorize abandoned assets, and developing endogenous potentials for future sustainable development. Qualitative methods from a combination of literature review, policy review, and field surveys have mainly been adopted in this research. The study of East Asian practices may be instructive for other Asia-Pacific countries, as well as European countries that have been experiencing or will eventually face the challenges of rural shrinkage. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the bio-industry is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, it is necessary to respond to the changed environment after COVID-19 by analyzing the bio-industry situation before the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Korean bio-industry is a very important industry for Korea’s economic growth, so huge investments are being made in the development of bio-companies. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the effect of innovation capabilities on the performance of the Korean bio-industry. Korea’s bio-industry has been developing under the leadership of the government. Thus, Korea’s bio-companies need various forms of innovation to achieve sustainability through competitive advantage on their own. The objective of this research is to find the competitive advantage factors that improve the innovation ability of the Korean bio-industry. Therefore, the elements that increase a company’s innovation capability were studied in order to uncover competitive advantage factors that improve the Korean bio-industry’s innovation capability, and the effect on corporate performance was analyzed. Using samples from the ‘Korean Bio-industry Survey’, the current state of the Korean bio-industry was examined through a review of all bio-industry enterprises. In addition, each of the eight bio-industries was examined using Korea’s industrial classification system. As an analysis method, multiple regression analysis of SPSS 25 was performed to analyze how the six input factors have a complex effect on the output factor. This study discovered that R&D intensity, machine investment, and human resource characteristics all had an impact on the business performance of Korean biotech enterprises. In eight bio-sectors, elements affecting company success were defined differently. Therefore, through this study, Korean bio-companies must understand their own industrial characteristics, and develop factors that affect business performance through strategic operational management. In addition, based on the results of this study, companies should strengthen the innovation capabilities of the bio-industry to survive post-COVID-19, analyze changes in innovation capabilities, and promote sustainable growth by strengthening key innovation factors. This study investigates the relationship between hotel employees’ perceptions of organizational politics, organizational silence, organizational cynicism, and innovation resistance. For this purpose, subjects (n = 351, 235 men and 116 women) from four-star hotels in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi-do, and Jeju-do in South Korea were surveyed. The following four hypotheses were presented to achieve this study’s goal. First, the perception of organizational politics has a positive effect on organizational silence. Second, organizational silence positively affects organizational cynicism. Third, organizational silence has a positive effect on innovation resistance. Fourth, organizational cynicism positively affects innovation resistance. The results of hypothesis testing reveal that all hypotheses except for the fourth one are accepted. This study’s findings suggest that hotels should provide a work environment that is free from unfair organizational political activities. Full article
