Radiometric Cross-Calibration and Validation of KOMPSAT-3/AEISS Using Sentinel-2A/MSI

The successful launch of Korea Multipurpose Satellite-3/Advanced Earth Imaging Sensor System (KOMPSAT-3/AEISS) on 18 May 2012 allowed the Republic of Korea to meet the growing demand for high-resolution satellite imagery. However, like all satellite sensors, KOMPSAT-3/AEISS experienced temporal changes post-launch and thus requires ongoing evaluation and calibration. Although more than a decade has passed since launch, the KOMPSAT-3/AEISS mission and its multi-year data archive remain widely used. This study focused on the cross-calibration of KOMPSAT-3/AEISS with Sentinel-2A/Multispectral Instrument (MSI) by comparing the radiometric responses of the two satellite sensors under similar observation conditions, leveraging the linear relationship between Digital Numbers (DN) and top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance. Cross-calibration was performed using near-simultaneous satellite images of the same region, and the Spectral Band Adjustment Factor (SBAF) was calculated and applied to account for differences in spectral response functions (SRF). Additionally, Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) correction was applied using MODIS-based kernel models to minimize angular reflectance effects caused by differences in viewing and illumination geometry. This study aims to evaluate the radiometric consistency of KOMPSAT-3/AEISS relative to Sentinel-2A/MSI over Baotou scenes acquired in 2022–2023, derive band-specific calibration coefficients and compare them with prior results, and conduct a side-by-side comparison of cross-calibration and vicarious calibration. Furthermore, the cross-calibration yielded band-specific gains of 0.0196 (Blue), 0.0237 (Green), 0.0214 (Red), and 0.0136 (NIR). These findings offer valuable implications for Earth observation, environmental monitoring, and the planning and execution of future satellite missions. Full article

Feeling Connected to Nature Attenuates the Association between Complicated Grief and Mental Health

Complicated grief (CG) predicts decreased mental health over time. Furthermore, feeling connected to nature (CN) is positively associated with beneficial mental health outcomes, such as psychological wellbeing and perceived psychological resilience. Thus, we hypothesized that CN moderates the association between general grief or CG and negative mental health for bereaved people. Further, we hypothesized that one’s physical exposure to nature—that is, estimated time spent in nature and greenness (i.e., vegetation) surrounding one’s residential area—might moderate the association between general grief or CG and negative mental health for bereaved people. To test these hypotheses, we conducted a cross-sectional study. We sampled 153 participants who experienced the death of a close other by COVID-19 infection. Participants reported CG, general grief, anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, CN, estimated time spent in nature, and residential area postal code via a single online survey. We estimated greenness surrounding participants’ residential areas using their self-reported five-digit U.S. postal code. Cross-sectional analyses indicated that, as predicted, CN attenuated the association between CG and depression, trended toward moderating the association between CG and anxiety, and did not moderate the associations between general grief and depression or anxiety. Other variables related to the experience of nature—the estimated time an individual spends in nature and the greenness surrounding one’s residential area—did not moderate the association between general grief or CG and depression or anxiety. We thus conclude that a sense of feeling connected to nature—not simply spending more time in nature or being surrounded by nature—may serve an important role in the mental health status of people experiencing complicated grief, perhaps because CN replenishes general belonging when someone significant has passed away. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is widely used for monitoring vegetation status, as accurate and reliable NDVI time series are crucial for understanding the relationship between environmental conditions, vegetation health, and productivity. Ground digital cameras have been recognized as important potential data sources for validating remote-sensing NDVI products. However, differences in the spectral characteristics and imaging methods between sensors onboard satellites and ground digital cameras hinder direct consistency analyses, thereby limiting the quantitative application of camera-based observations. To address this limitation and meet the needs of vegetation monitoring research and remote-sensing NDVI validation, this study implements a novel NDVI camera. The proposed camera incorporates narrowband dual-pass filters designed to precisely separate red and near-infrared (NIR) spectral bands, which are aligned with the configuration of sensors onboard satellites. Through software-controlled imaging parameters, the camera captures the real radiance of vegetation reflection, ensuring the acquisition of accurate NDVI values while preserving the evolving trends of the vegetation status. The performance of this NDVI camera was evaluated using a hyperspectral spectrometer in the Hulunbuir Grassland over a period of 93 days. The results demonstrate distinct seasonal characteristics in the camera-derived NDVI time series using the Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC) index. Moreover, in comparison to the GCC index, the camera’s NDVI values exhibit greater consistency with those obtained from the hyperspectral spectrometer, with a mean deviation of 0.04, and a relative root mean square error of 9.68%. This indicates that the narrowband NDVI, compared to traditional color indices like the GCC index, has a stronger ability to accurately capture vegetation changes. Cross-validation using the NDVI results from the camera and the PlanetScope satellite further confirms the potential of the camera-derived NDVI data for consistency analyses with remote sensing-based NDVI products, thus highlighting the potential of camera observations for quantitative applications The research findings emphasize that the novel NDVI camera, based on a narrowband spectral design, not only enables the acquisition of real vegetation index (VI) values but also facilitates the direct validation of vegetation remote-sensing NDVI products. Manufacturing enterprises are confronted with the historic opportunity and challenge of balancing green transformation with economic development to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Some advanced companies are increasingly pursuing green development and innovation by expanding and optimizing the use of digital technology. In this study, we employ Chinese listed manufacturing companies from 2013–2019 as the research sample and examine the mechanism by which corporate digital optimization affects green technological innovation, as well as the mediating role of green R&D collaboration between the two. We also introduce external environmental orientation as a moderating variable. The results of fixed-effect Poisson model analysis are as follows. First, a positive correlation between digital optimization and green R&D collaboration indicates that scaling up digital optimization promotes green R&D collaboration. Second, we observe an inverted U-shaped relationship between green R&D collaboration and green technological innovation. Third, green R&D collaboration acts as a mediating factor between digital optimization and green technological innovation, and external environmental orientation moderates the relationship between digital optimization and green R&D collaboration. Fourth, the threshold effect results indicate that the optimal value of digital optimization projects is 10.167, with too many or too few projects impairing the effect of digital optimization on green technological innovation. All of the above results passed the robustness test. Full article

Since the early stage of the current pandemic, digital contact tracing (DCT) through mobile phone apps, called “Immuni”, has been introduced to complement manual contact tracing in Italy. Until 31 December 2021, Immuni identified 44,880 COVID-19 cases, which corresponds to less than 1% of total COVID-19 cases reported in Italy in the same period (5,886,411). Overall, Immuni generated 143,956 notifications. Although the initial download of the Immuni app represented an early interest in the new tool, Immuni has had little adoption across the Italian population, and the recent increase in its download is likely to be related to the mandatory Green Pass certification for conducting most daily activities that can be obtained via the application. Therefore, Immuni failed as a support tool for the contact tracing system. Other European experiences seem to show similar limitations in the use of DTC, leaving open questions about its effectiveness, although in theory, contact tracing could allow useful means of “proximity tracking”. Background: In July 2021, the vaccination campaign in Italy suffered a sudden setback, and the number of vaccine administrations decreased dramatically. On 20 July 2021, the obligation of the Green Digital Pass came into force in order to access work and leisure places, penalizing those who had not been vaccinated. The purpose of this work was to investigate the phenomenon of vaccination hesitancy and the underlying reasons, as well as any changes to the membership following the obligation of the Green Pass. Methods: A total of 83 subjects (45.8% F; mean age 22.24 ± 4.308) participated in the survey during the post-vaccine observation phase at the Vaccinal Center of the University Hospital “San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona” (Salerno, Italy). The questionnaire collected anamnestic information, as well as data on state anxiety (STAI-Y), perception of quality of life (SF-12), perception of COVID-19 risks, and vaccine hesitancy. Results: Among participants, 19.3% reported hesitation. The most common concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine concerned safety and efficacy (4.9%) and the obligation of the Green Pass (4.9%). Conclusions: Findings suggest that delving into the phenomenon of vaccine hesitancy can help to enhance vaccination strategies in order to gain widespread acceptance, a key path to ensuring a quick way out of the current pandemic emergency. Slides de cavalete | Easel slides (1978–1979) is a slide-based artwork by the Portuguese artist Ângelo de Sousa (1938–2011), composed of one-hundred colour slides. Each image was produced by capturing different proportions of red, green, and blue (RGB) lights to obtain colour gradations. The artwork was first presented in the exhibition A Fotografia como Arte/A Arte como Fotografia | Photography as Art/Art as Photography in 1979. Associated with this exhibition, documentary evidence was found during the present study providing specific instruction on how to display the artwork (possibly unknown until now). According to that documentation, the artist wanted the work to be projected on a canvas mounted in an easel with a 19th century semblance, using a slide projector. In the last two exhibitions, carried out in 2017, after the artist had passed, the work was displayed as a digital projection, without the previously mentioned sculptural components. It was considered that this deviation from the first presentation could have led to a misunderstanding of the work. Thus, an exhibition of this artwork was prepared in a room at the Library of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia. This was built as an experimental laboratory, having as one of its important objectives to test the variability of the work projected with a slide projector and a digital projector, following the display setup defined by the artist. For four days, the visitors were shown the work displayed under these two distinct scenarios of presentation. The visitors were also asked to fill out a questionnaire, to capture their perception about the variance of the work. The data obtained in the questionnaire and during the exhibition reinforced the decision to expose Slides de cavalete using the original technology. The public preferred the quality and beauty of the image using the slide projector, highlighting as positive aspects more granularity and warmer hue as well as higher depth of the images. Additionally, the production process behind Slides de cavalete was studied, based on documentation discovered in the artist’s archive and on reproductions, to enrich our perception of the work, in particular the complexity of creating the sfumato effects, and to understand the impact of changing the display technology. The results obtained made it possible to identify the main steps of making these slides, and this knowledge was shared with visitors in a workshop, integrated in this experimental laboratory. A direct exposure technique to simulate the vegetation red-magenta hues associated with the traditional Kodak Ektachrome Professional Infrared EIR film is proposed. The method uses the Foveon sensor in full spectrum mode as found in Sigma cameras in combination with green-pass filters to reproduce the red-magenta hues of healthy vegetation without resorting to multi-exposures or channel swaps as is the current norm in single sensor cameras. An array of commercially available green-pass filters are analyzed via spectrophotmetric, densitometric and colorimetric measurements. A calibration technique using color-compensating filters is presented such that any green-pass filter will transmit green wavelengths to a set norm and ensure repeatability. A color model for the Foveon/green-pass filter is developed using quantum efficiencies to explain the color effects observed. Color similarities in near-infrared, blue and black and differences in red and green compared with Kodak Ektachrome Infrared film are discussed. Aerial photography examples are discussed, and the technique is proposed as a more direct means of obtaining traditional false color infrared imagery for pictorial and scientific applications when using Foveon type commercially available digital cameras.
