An analysis of the effect on the flow regime caused by reservoir operation is crucial to balancing the exploitation and protection of water resources. The long-term effect of this on the intraday scale and small storage capacity is considerable, but rarely analyzed. This study examines the world’s largest dual-cascade hydro-junction, the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam junction, as a case study, adopting eight indices to characterize the reservoir’s inflow and outflow fluctuation. In doing this, we evaluate the alteration of the flow regime induced by an up-cascade reservoir and its alleviation caused by the down-cascade re-regulation. The results show: (1) an increment of the river flow fluctuation at the Three Gorges Dam, matched with hourly scale alleviation at the Gezhouba Dam; (2) a reduction (25.09~41.35%) in the quantitative indices of the river flow regime fluctuation; (3) perturbations on the power output. These findings provide references for developing methods to assess the re-regulation mechanisms in systems with upper- and lower-cascades. Full article

This paper presents a nested approach for generating long-term, medium-term, and short-term reservoir scheduling models, which is based on the actual needs of the scheduling operation of the Three Gorges–Gezhouba (TG-GZB) cascade reservoirs. The approach has established a five-tier optimal scheduling model in which the time interval of the scheduling plan prepared by the model can be as short as 15 min, meeting the real-time scheduling requirements of the cascade hydropower station system. This study also presents a comparatively comprehensive introduction to all solving algorithms that have ever been adopted in the multi-time scale coordinated and optimized scheduling model. Based on that, some practical and efficient solving algorithms are developed for the characteristics of the scheduling model, including the coupled iterative method of alternating reservoirs (CIMAR)—the improved dynamic programming (IDP) algorithm and the improved genetic algorithm (IGA). In addition, optimized-scheduling solutions were generated by each of the three algorithms and were compared in terms of their convergence rate, calculation time, electric energy generated, and standard deviation of the algorithm. The results based on the Cascade Scheduling and Communication System (CSCS) of Three Gorges–Gezhouba, China, which includes two interlinked mega-scale reservoir projects, show that scheduling models have better efficiency and good convergence, and more importantly, the maximization of the power generation benefits of the hydropower plants has been achieved without violating any of the reservoir scheduling regulations. Knowledge of river engineering impacts on water discharge is significant to flow guidelines and sustainable water resource managements for balancing human consumption and the natural environment. In this study, based on the collected multi-decadal discharge data at Yichang, Hankou, and Datong stations, we determined that in October, Three Gorges Dam contributed 34.4%, 24.5%, and 18.7% to the discharge decrease in the upper, middle, and lower reach, respectively, while Gezhouba Dam contributed 14.5%, 10.7%, and 10%. Danjiangkou Reservoir caused the discharge ratio of Hanjiang to Changjiang to decline from 7.2% during 1954–1973 to 6.3% during 1973–2014. Owing to growing water withdrawal and consumption, we suggest that the distribution of water diversion and consumption should be regulated to prevent the probable occurrence of the severe issue of salt water intrusion in the Changjiang Estuary in 2028. Dam building and reservoir operations alter the downstream hydrological regime, and as a result, affect the health of the river aquatic ecosystem, particularly for large-scale cascade reservoirs. This study investigated the impact of the Gezhouba Reservoir (GR) and the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) on the spawning conditions of two critical taxa, i.e., the endemic four major carps and the endangered Chinese sturgeon in the Yangtze River. We analyzed the flow, sediment, and thermal regime in these two taxa spawning seasons and compared their features between the predam and postdam periods. Our results revealed that the GR and the TGR had altered the frequency distributions of flow, sediment, and water temperature to different degrees, with the impact by the GR on the carps and Chinese sturgeon ranked as water temperature > flow, sediment > water temperature > flow, and the effect of the TGR on these two taxa were ordered as flow > water temperature, sediment > flow > water temperature. For the GR, the satisfying degree of the suitable flow and water temperature of the carps increased, whilst the suitable flow, sediment, and water temperature for the Chinese sturgeon decreased. These changes in TGR showed a significant ascending (descending) trend in the suitable flow (water temperature) for the carps, and a clear decreasing trend in the flow, sediment, and temperature for Chinese sturgeon. Both the TGR and the GR had negative impacts on the spawning of these two taxa in terms of the rising/falling flow characteristics. Full article

Optimal operation of hydropower reservoir systems often needs to optimize multiple conflicting objectives simultaneously. The conflicting objectives result in a Pareto front, which is a set of non-dominated solutions. Non-dominated solutions cannot outperform each other on all the objectives. An optimization framework based on the multi-swarm comprehensive learning particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the multi-objective operation of hydropower reservoir systems. Through adopting search techniques such as decomposition, mutation and differential evolution, the algorithm tries to derive multiple non-dominated solutions reasonably distributed over the true Pareto front in one single run, thereby facilitating determining the final tradeoff. The long-term sustainable planning of the Three Gorges cascaded hydropower system consisting of the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam located on the Yangtze River in China is studied. Two conflicting objectives, i.e., maximizing hydropower generation and minimizing deviation from the outflow lower target to realize the system’s economic, environmental and social benefits during the drought season, are optimized simultaneously. Experimental results demonstrate that the optimization framework helps to robustly derive multiple feasible non-dominated solutions with satisfactory convergence, diversity and extremity in one single run for the case studied.
