Efficient and low-polluting mobility is a major demand in all countries. Hybrid electric vehicles have already shown to be suitable to respond to this need, being a reliable alternative to conventional cars, at least in urban environments. Nevertheless, such vehicles present a yet unexplored potential. In this paper, we will investigate how the powertrain efficiency may possibly benefit, in an integrated drivetrain for a hybrid electric vehicle, based on a turbocharged gasoline engine, of an innovative supercharging system. The compressor and turbine will be mechanically decoupled so as to independently optimize their operation, avoiding turbo lag and maximizing energy recovery by completely eliminating the waste-gate valve. This, in turns, requires changing the turbine so as to have a flattest possible efficiency/load curve. Therefore, an ad-hoc designed turbine will be implemented in the decoupled configuration, to be used to drive an electrical generator and produce electrical energy for charging the battery. This study presents a preliminary assessment of the potential of a turbo-compounded system for a 1L turbocharged gasoline engine for a small city car. To this aim, a one-dimensional dynamic model of the engine has been built in GT-Suite and has been calibrated and validated by means of experimental data obtained on a dynamometer, both in steady state and dynamic conditions. In particular, the model has been calibrated by means of experimental data obtained in stationary conditions and its robustness has then been verified through experimental data obtained under transient conditions. The model also includes data retrieved from the characterization of the existing turbine and compressor, while a new performance map for the turbine has been designed to better exploit the potential of the components’ decoupling. Results include the estimation of energy recovery potential of such a solution. Under the implementation of a straightforward control strategy, which runs both compressor and turbine at the same speed, the system is able to achieve a 60.57% increase in energy recovered from the exhaust gasses in the turbine. Afterwards, an attempt was made to limit the minimum turbine speed to 45000 rpm and simultaneously decrease the instantaneous speed by 3000 rpm compared to the compressor, attaining a further increase of 1.7% in the energy recovered by the turbine. Electrified vehicles have undergone great evolution during the last decade because of the increasing attention paid on environmental sustainability, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Emission regulations are becoming increasingly tight, and governments have been allocating multiple funds to facilitate the spreading of the so-called green mobility. In this context, steering towards electrified solutions not only for passenger vehicles, but also for compact off-highway vehicles extensively employed, for instance, on construction sites located in urban areas, warehouses, and greenhouses, is essential even if seldom considered. Moreover, the electrification of compact off-highway machinery may allow manufacturers to increase their expertise in and lower the costs of these alternative solutions, while gathering useful data to be applied in bigger and more remunerative off-highway vehicles. In fact, while electric automobiles are as of now real alternatives for buyers, off-highway vehicles, regardless of the application, are mostly in the research and experimental phase, with few of them already on the market. This delay, in comparison with the passenger automotive industry, is caused by different factors, mostly related to the different tasks of off-highway vehicles in terms of duty cycles, productivity performance parameters and user acceptability. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the many aspects of the electrification of compact off-highway vehicles, to highlight the key differences between on-highway and off-highway vehicles and to summarize in a single source of information the multiple solutions investigated by researchers and manufacturers. In this work, the problem of reducing the energy consumption of the cooling circuit for the propulsion system of an all-electric vehicle is approached with two different concepts: improvement of the powertrain efficiency and optimization of the control strategy. Improvement of the powertrain efficiency is obtained through a modular design, which consists of replacing the electric powertrain with several smaller traction modules whose powers sum up to the total power of the original powertrain. In this paper, it is shown how modularity, among other benefits, also allows reducing the energy consumption of the cooling system up to 54%. The energy consumption of the cooling system is associated with two components: the pump and the fan. They produce a so-called auxiliary load on the battery, reducing the maximum range of the vehicle. In conventional cooling systems, the pump and the fan are controlled with a thermostat, without taking into account the energy consumption. Conversely, in this work a control strategy to reduce the auxiliary loads is developed and compared with the conventional approach, showing that the energy consumption of the cooling system can be reduced up to 27%. To test the control strategy, numerical simulations have been carried out with a 1-D model of the cooling system. On the other hand, all the thermal loads of the components have been calculated with a vehicle simulator, which is able to predict the vehicle’s behavior under different driving cycles. Full article

In this paper, a general quasi-steady backward-looking model for energy consumption estimation of electric vehicles is presented. The model is based on a literature review of existing approaches and was set up using publicly available data for Nissan Leaf. The model has been used to assess the effect of ambient temperature on energy consumption and range, considering various reference driving cycles. The results are supported and validated using data available from an experimental campaign where the Nissan Leaf was driven to depletion across a broad range of winter ambient temperatures. The effect of ambient temperature and the consequent accessories consumption due to cabin heating are shown to be remarkable. For instance, in case of Federal Urban Driving Schedule (FUDS), simplified FUDS (SFUDS), and New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) driving cycles, the range exceeds 150 km at 20 °C, while it reduces to about 85 km and 60 km at 0 °C and −15 °C, respectively. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is reported to assess the impact of the hypotheses in the battery model and of making different assumptions on the regenerative braking efficiency. Full article

This paper presents a systematic approach for the design of post-transmission hybrid electric vehicle powertrains, as an instrument aiding the designer in making the right decision. In particular, a post-transmission series/parallel hybrid electric powertrain is considered, and all of the possible energy paths are taken into account, in order to automatically select the configuration that gives the lowest fuel consumption, thus better fitting to the considered mission. The optimization problem is solved with the Dijkstra algorithm, which is more computationally efficient than other optimization algorithms in the case of massive design spaces. In this way, it is possible to design a vehicle in terms of architecture and component sizes, without making any a priori choices, which are usually based on common sense, likely compromising the overall system efficiency. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology, different driving cycles have been simulated, and some results are presented. The methodology is particularly applied to re-engineered vehicles, aimed at maximizing the benefits of the vehicle hybridization process. Results show how the introduction, in the optimization algorithm, of the engine load factor and sharing factor, for the engine torque split between the generator and the wheels, is crucial. For example, a 10% reduction of the original engine size, suggested by a low load factor, is able to allow for a 24% reduction in the fuel consumption. On the other hand, the sharing factor is of particular importance in suggesting if the vehicle architecture should be series, parallel or rather combined. Full article

This paper evaluates the performance of a fuel cell/battery vehicle with an on-board autothermal reformer, fed by different liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon fuels. A sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the system behavior under the variation of the steam to carbon and oxygen to carbon ratios. This is done in order to identify the most suitable operating conditions for a direct on-board production of hydrogen to be used in a high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. The same system should be able to process different fuels, to allow the end-user to freely decide which one to use to refuel the vehicle. Hence, the obtained operating conditions result in a trade-off between system flexibility as the feeding fuel changes, CO poisoning effect on the fuel cell and overall efficiency. The system is thus coupled to a high temperature fuel cell, modeled by means of a self-made tool, able to reproduce the polarization curve as the input syngas composition varies, and the overall system is afterwards tested on a plug-in fuel cell/battery vehicle simulator, in order to provide a thorough feasibility analysis, focusing on the entire system efficiency. Results show that a proper energy management strategy can mitigate the effect of the fuel variation on the reformer efficiency, allowing for good overall powertrain performance. Full article

In this paper, an off-grid hybrid power plant with multiple storage systems for an artificial island is designed and two possible strategies for the management of the stored energy are proposed. Renewable power sources (wind/solar technologies) are used as primary power suppliers. A lead-acid battery pack (BAT) and a reversible polymer electrolyte fuel cell are employed to fulfill the power demand and to absorb extra power. The reversible fuel cell allows reducing costs and occupied space and the fuel cell can be fed by the pure hydrogen produced by means of its reversible operation as an electrolyzer. A diesel engine is employed as backup system. While HOMER Pro® has been employed for a full-factorial-based optimization of the sizes of the renewable sources and the BAT, Matlab/Simulink® has been later used for simulating the plant operation and compare two possible power management control strategies. For the reversible fuel cell sizing, a sensitivity analysis has been carried out varying stack and hydrogen tank sizes. The final choice for plant configuration and power management control strategy has been made on the basis of a comparative analysis of the results, aimed at minimizing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, battery aging rate and at maximizing the power plant overall efficiency. The obtained results demonstrate the possibility of realizing a renewable power plant, able to match the needs of electrical power in a remote area, by achieving a good integration of different energy sources and facing the intermittent nature of renewable power sources, with very low use of fossil fuels.
