This article presents a hybrid fault diagnosis framework for DC–DC converters in photovoltaic (PV) systems, combining digital twin (DT) modelling and detection with machine learning anomaly classification. The proposed method addresses both hardware faults such as open and short circuits in insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) and diodes and sensor-level false data injection attacks (FDIAs). A five-dimensional DT architecture is employed, where a virtual entity implemented using FMI-compliant FMUs interacts with a real-time emulated physical plant. Fault detection is performed by comparing the real-time system behaviour with DT predictions, using dynamic thresholds based on power, voltage, and current sensors errors. Once a discrepancy is flagged, a second step classifier processes normalized time-series windows to identify the specific fault type. Synthetic training data are generated using emulation models under normal and faulty conditions, and feature vectors are constructed using a compact, interpretable set of statistical and spectral descriptors. The model was validated using OPAL-RT Hardware in the Loop emulations. The results show high classification accuracy, robustness to environmental fluctuations, and transferability across system configurations. The framework also demonstrates compatibility with low-cost deployment hardware, confirming its practical applicability for fault diagnosis in real-world PV systems. Full article

The storage of enormous energies is a significant challenge for electrical generation. Researchers have studied energy storage methods and increased efficiency for many years. In recent years, researchers have been exploring new materials and techniques to store more significant amounts of energy more efficiently. In particular, renewable energy sources and electric vehicle technologies are triggering these scientific studies. Scientists and manufacturers recently proposed the supercapacitor (SC) as an alternating or hybrid storage device. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of SC applications and their developments. Accordingly, a detailed literature review was first carried out. The historical results of SCs are revealed in this paper. The structure, working principle, and materials of SC are given in detail to be analysed more effectively. The advantages and disadvantages, market profile, and new technologies with manufacturer corporations are investigated to produce a techno-economic analysis of SCs. The electric vehicle, power systems, hybrid energy storage systems with integration of renewable energy sources, and other applications of SCs are investigated in this paper. Additionally, SC modelling design principles with charge and discharge tests are explored. Other components and their price to produce a compact module for high power density are also investigated. Deployment of a battery energy storage system for the photovoltaic (PV) application has been increasing at a fast rate. Depending on the number of power conversion units and their type of connection, the PV-battery system can be classified into DC- and AC-coupled configurations. The number of the components and their electrical loading directly affects the reliability of each of the configurations. Hence, in order to assure high efficiency and lifetime of the PV-battery system, reliability assessment of power conversion units (representing the most reliability-critical system components) is necessary. With respect to that, in this paper, a reliability assessment of the PV-battery system is performed and a comparison of the DC- and AC-coupled configuration reliability is conducted. In the analysis, all parts of the power conversion system, i.e., DC/DC and DC/AC converter units, are taken into consideration and component-, converter- and system-level reliability is assessed. A case study of 6 kW PV system with integrated 3 kW/7.5 kWh battery system has shown that higher reliability is achieved for DC-coupled configuration. The obtained results indicate that the probability of failure for the 15% of the population for DC-coupled configuration occurs 7 years later than that is a case for AC-coupled configuration. Finally, the presented analysis can serve as a benchmark for lifetime and reliability assessment of power conversion units in PV-battery systems for both configuration types. It provides information about differences in electrical and thermal loading of the power conversion units and resulting reliability of the two configurations. Full article
