Cross sections and thermally averaged rate coefficients for the vibrational excitation and de-excitation by electron impact on the HDO molecule are computed using a theoretical approach based entirely on first principles. This approach combines scattering matrices obtained from the UK R-matrix codes for various geometries of the target molecule, three-dimensional vibrational states of HDO, and the vibrational frame transformation. The vibrational states of the molecule are evaluated by solving the Schrödinger equation numerically, without relying on the normal-mode approximation, which is known to be inaccurate for water molecules. As a result, couplings and transitions between the vibrational states of HDO are accurately accounted for. From the calculated cross sections, thermally averaged rate coefficients and their analytical fits are provided. Significant differences between the results for HDO and H2O are observed. Additionally, an uncertainty assessment of the obtained data is performed for potential use in modeling non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) spectra of water in various astrophysical environments. Background: Despite early diagnosis, approximately 20% of patients with ER-positive and HER2-negative breast cancer (BC) will experience disease recurrence. Improved survival has been reported with adjuvant treatment combining cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors with endocrine therapy, in high-risk patients with ER-positive and HER2-negative BC, regardless of age. Older patients have higher rates of ER-positive/HER2-negative BC than younger patients. Methods: In this real-world data analysis, MonarchE and NataLEE high-risk patients accounted for 9.5% and 33% of patients undergoing upfront surgery, respectively. Significantly higher eligibility rates were observed in patients who underwent a mastectomy, >70 years and ≤40 years for adjuvant abemaciclib and ribociclib, and in patients >80 years for ribociclib. Results: Eligibility rates in patients ≤40 years and >80 years who underwent mastectomy were 27.8% and 24.7% for abemaciclib, respectively, and 56.6% and 65.2% for ribociclib, respectively. A higher discontinuation rate for abemaciclib was reported in patients aged ≥65 years and it can be assumed that discontinuation rates may increase in even older patients. Conclusions: If the results of the NataLEE trial translate into clinical practice, the number of patients potentially eligible for adjuvant CDK4/6 inhibitors may increase, especially in the elderly population. This is a retrospective study conducted on patients with OPG, aged less than 19 years, treated with bevacizumab as a single agent, since 2010 at IHOPe (Institute of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology). Efficacy of the treatment was evaluated on the tumor response rate on MRI with a centralized review basing upon RAPNO criteria and with visual assessment basing upon a 0.2 log change in the logMAR scale. Thirty-one patients with OPG have been included. From a radiological point of view, best anytime responses were: 1 major response, 6 partial responses, 7 minor responses and 14 stable diseases; achieving disease control in 28 (96%) out of 29 patients. Ophthalmological response was evaluated in 25 patients and disease control was achieved in 22 (88%) out of 25, with 14 steady states and 8 significant improvements. Among patients treated with chemotherapy after the bevacizumab course, nine relapsed and have been retreated with objective responses. Bevacizumab used as single agent seems effective in children and adolescents with OPG. Our work paves the way for a phase II study in which bevacizumab alone could be used as frontline therapy. We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the rotationally inelastic scattering of heavy water, D2O, with normal-H2. Crossed-molecular beam measurements are performed in the collision energy range between 10 and 100 cm−1, corresponding to the near-threshold regime in which scattering resonances are most pronounced. State-to-state excitation cross-sections are obtained by probing three low-lying rotational levels of D2O using the REMPI technique. These measurements are complemented by quantum close-coupling scattering calculations based on a high-accuracy D2O–H2 interaction potential. The agreement between experiment and theory is within the experimental error bars at 95% confidence intervals, leading to a relative difference of less than 7%: the near-threshold rise and the overall shape of the cross-sections, including small undulations due to resonances, are nicely reproduced by the calculations. Isotopic effects (D2O versus H2O) are also discussed by comparing the shape and magnitude of the respective cross-sections. Full article

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is the most widely used biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis. However, AFP is not useful in establishing a prognosis for patients with a tumor in the early stages. hPG80 (circulating progastrin) is a tumor promoting peptide present in the blood of patients with various cancers, including HCC. In this study, we evaluated the prognostic value of plasma hPG80 in patients with HCC, alone or in combination with AFP. A total of 168 HCC patients were tested prospectively for hPG80 and analyzed retrospectively. The prognostic impact of hPG80 and AFP levels on patient survival was assessed using Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests. hPG80 was detected in 84% of HCC patients. There was no correlation between hPG80 and AFP levels in the training and validation cohorts. Both cohorts showed higher sensitivity of hPG80 compared to AFP, especially at early stages. Patients with high hPG80 (hPG80+) levels (optimal cutoff value 4.5 pM) had significantly lower median overall survival (OS) compared to patients with low hPG80 (hPG80−) levels (12.4 months versus not reached respectively, p < 0.0001). Further stratification by combining hPG80 and AFP levels (cutoff 100 ng/mL) improved prognosis in particular for those patients with low AFP level (hPG80−/AFP+ and hPG80−/AFP−, 13.4 months versus not reached respectively, p < 0.0001 and hPG80+/AFP+ and hPG80+/AFP−, 5.7 versus 26 months respectively, p < 0.0001). This was corroborated when analyses were performed using the BCLC staging especially at early stages. Our findings show that hPG80 could serve as a new prognostic biomarker in HCC. Used in combination with AFP, it improves the stratification of the patients in good and poor prognosis, especially for those patients with negative AFP and early-stage HCC. Full article

Cross-sections and thermally averaged rate coefficients for vibration (de-)excitation of a water molecule by electron impact are computed; one and two quanta excitations are considered for all three normal modes. The calculations use a theoretical approach that combines the normal mode approximation for vibrational states of water, a vibrational frame transformation employed to evaluate the scattering matrix for vibrational transitions and the UK molecular R-matrix code. The interval of applicability of the rate coefficients is from 10 to 10,000 K. A comprehensive set of calculations is performed to assess uncertainty of the obtained data. The results should help in modelling non-LTE spectra of water in various astrophysical environments. Full article

The Leiden Atomic and Molecular Database (LAMDA) collects spectroscopic information and collisional rate coefficients for molecules, atoms, and ions of astrophysical and astrochemical interest. We describe the developments of the database since its inception in 2005, and outline our plans for the near future. Such a database is constrained both by the nature of its uses and by the availability of accurate data: we suggest ways to improve the synergies among users and suppliers of data. We summarize some recent developments in computation of collisional cross sections and rate coefficients. We consider atomic and molecular data that are needed to support astrophysics and astrochemistry with upcoming instruments that operate in the mid- and far-infrared parts of the spectrum. Soft-rot bacteria Pectobacterium and Dickeya use N-acyl homoserine lactones (NAHSLs) as diffusible signals for coordinating quorum sensing communication. The production of NAHSLs was investigated in a set of reference strains and recently-collected isolates, which belong to six species and share the ability to infect the potato host plant. All the pathogens produced different NAHSLs, among which the 3-oxo-hexanoyl- and the 3-oxo-octanoyl-L-homoserine lactones represent at least 90% of total produced NAHSL-amounts. The level of NAHSLs varied from 0.6 to 2 pg/cfu. The involvement of NAHSLs in tuber maceration was investigated by electroporating a quorum quenching vector in each of the bacterial pathogen strains. All the NAHSL-lactonase expressing strains produced a lower amount of NAHSLs as compared to those harboring the empty vector. Moreover, all except Dickeya dadantii 3937 induced a lower level of symptoms in potato tuber assay. Noticeably, aggressiveness appeared to be independent of both nature and amount of produced signals. This work highlights that quorum sensing similarly contributed to virulence in most of the tested Pectobacterium and Dickeya, even the strains had been isolated recently or during the past decades. Thus, these key regulatory-molecules appear as credible targets for developing anti-virulence strategies against these plant pathogens. Full article
