Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Black youth and young adults may experience unique mental health stressors, combined with complex barriers to treatment and support. This may include cultural beliefs about mental health, such as the need to persevere despite emotional challenges, internalized and social stigma about mental health symptoms or help-seeking, and mistrust of healthcare systems. Research has also continually documented structural barriers, including insurance coverage, cost of services, availability of providers, location of facilities, and competing demands or responsibilities. There is a need for research that moves beyond documenting disparities, with a greater focus on disseminating innovative methods for mental health promotion among Black youth and young adults.
For this Special Issue, Youth is interested in papers that engage in mental health promotion among Black youth, adolescents, and emerging adults. The journal is particularly interested in studies that aim to build resilience, increase community capacity, improve social determinants of health, and/or reduce stigma. Studies may focus on any area of mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder) or substance use. Submissions can include pilot and exploratory studies, in addition to reports from longitudinal trials. Research that includes elements of community engagement, such as participatory research methods, are highly encouraged.
