Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Relatively slow progress has been made in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery compared to other fields. The proximity to major vessels, complexity of anatomoses and overall difficulty of operations all impede the application of new technology, such as laparoscopy and robotic surgery. However, recently, amazing advancements have been made in our field. In 1991, Professor Reich reported the first laparoscopic hepatectomy. In 1994, Professors Gagner and Pomp reported the first laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy. Professor Giulianotti performed the first robot-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy in 2001. Thanks to many such pioneering advancements and the efforts of surgical societies around the world, minimally invasive hepatectomy and pancreatectomy have become commonplace. With the advent of robotic surgery and artificial intelligence, we are entering a new era, which has challenges and drawbacks.
In this issue, we will present state-of-the-art research in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
