Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Patients with intellectual disabilities often present with complex craniofacial, dental, and occlusal anomalies, requiring highly personalized, interdisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Dental and orthodontic management in these populations is particularly challenging due to the phenotypic and functional variability of their conditions, as well as the need for close collaboration with other medical, surgical, and rehabilitative specialties.

This Special Issue aims to gather original research, systematic reviews, case reports, and clinical updates addressing:

  • Advanced diagnostic strategies for early recognition of dentofacial anomalies in patients with intellectual disabilities;
  • Multidisciplinary treatment planning in pediatric and adult populations;
  • Innovative approaches in orthodontics and orthognathic surgery for complex cases;
  • Conservative and prosthetic dental management in patients with systemic conditions or intellectual disabilities;
  • Psychological, ethical, and communication aspects in patient and family care;
  • Digital technologies and 3D imaging for diagnosis and treatment planning.

The goal is to promote an integrated approach to the care of patients with intellectual disabilities, highlighting the importance of collaboration among specialists and the key role of dentists and orthodontists within the multidisciplinary team.

We welcome submissions that share clinical experiences, research findings, and innovative perspectives that can improve the quality of life and rehabilitative outcomes for these complex patients.
