Dear Colleagues,
Marine infrastructure inevitably affects currents, waves and other ocean physics. The effect of single structures can be quite local but may include an extensive wake. Sets of structures can have a broader effect on the coastal ocean, for example, affecting stratification and the location of fronts. With the adoption of renewable energy technologies that deliberately extract marine energy (e.g., tidal and wave) and the actual and projected expansion of offshore wind development, those effects are becoming more important. Some shelf seas are rapidly becoming industrialized zones (e.g., North Sea). Therefore, it is timely to collect a variety of studies that address these effects.
Submissions may address any aspect of offshore marine infrastructure affecting hydrodynamics. The effect of offshore renewable energy infrastructure is central, but effects of older infrastructure such as oil and gas rigs is within scope. Studies may include ecological effects or pollution but should be grounded in the physical causes, such as alterations of flow and stratification. All methods are within the scope of this Issue, including in situ observations, remote sensing from satellites and coastal radar, numerical modelling at any relevant scale. This topic challenges existing methods. Therefore, experimental designs and proposed new technology are relevant.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Oceans is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
