Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic, immune-mediated conditions with a rising global prevalence. The increasing number of patients, the complexity of treatments, and the psychosocial burden of these diseases demand innovative, person-centred models of care. In this evolving context, the role of the IBD nurse is gaining growing recognition.

IBD nurses are increasingly involved in clinical assessment, therapeutic education, self-care support, and coordination within multidisciplinary teams. Recent studies indicate a steady increase in the amount of evidence supporting the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in improving adherence, quality of life, and care continuity. However, these contributions remain underrepresented in the broader scientific discourse.

This collection seeks to gather original research, reviews, clinical innovations, and policy papers highlighting nurses' expanding competencies and impact in IBD care.

We invite authors to submit contributions that reflect the evolving role of nurses in the care of IBD, focusing on innovation and the centrality of the patient experience, to this Special Issue. We welcome papers on nurse-led clinics and interventions, which have proven effective in improving outcomes, care continuity, and patient satisfaction in IBD management. Key topics include patient education, health literacy, treatment adherence, and the promotion and management of self-care, as nurses play a crucial role in empowering patients for long-term disease management. We also encourage studies exploring caregiver involvement and family nursing care, particularly for vulnerable groups such as adolescents and older adults.

Submissions may focus on digital health and artificial intelligence tools that support personalized and remote care and on advanced nursing roles, training, and policies that foster professional recognition. Other relevant themes include quality improvement, patient-reported outcomes, and interdisciplinary models integrating nurses into comprehensive, person-centred care teams.

These contributions will enhance the scientific visibility of nursing in IBD care and support innovation in the delivery of care for chronic diseases.
