ICOMTA'21—The International Conference on Communication and Applied Technologies 2021

ICOMTA’21—The 2021 International Conference on Communication and Applied Technologies is organized by Del Rosario University (Bogotá, Colombia); the University of Vigo (Galicia, Spain); the University of Santiago de Compostela-Equipo de Investigaciones Políticas (Galicia, Spain); the University of A Coruña (Galicia, Spain); and the Information and Technology Management Association (ITMA). ICOMTA’21 is sponsored by the Iberian Information Systems and Technologies Association. The conference, which will take place at Del Rosario University in Bogotá (Colombia) between September 1 and 3, 2021, will either be held in person or virtually, depending on the health situation. Publication is guaranteed.

Call for Papers

Scope

ICOMTA'21, in its first edition called "Computation, Communication and fact-checking in the post-truth era", invites all those within the scientific, academic, and professional communities to present their contributions, which can be written in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. All papers will be submitted to a double-blind review by at least two members of the Scientific Committee, based on relevance, originality, importance, and clarity. The papers presented must be related to one of the main topics proposed for the conference:

Themes

  1. Digital communication and processes.
  2. Communication, health, politics, and technology. The other pandemic: disinformation in the age of coronavirus. Automation, bots, and algorithms.
  3. Fact-checking experiences in Europe and Latin America at the service of journalism: a comparative perspective.
  4. Persuasion and emotion: language and content analysis, and artificial intelligence.
  5. Freedom of speech, ethics, and transparency in digital society.
  6. Digital social media.
  7. Software, big data, data mining, and intelligent systems.
  8. Miscellaneous (journalism, communication, advertising and public relations, political science, and other aspects of Social and Human Sciences derived from information and communication technologies).

All papers accepted for presentation will have the opportunity to be considered for publication in the following outlets:

  1. Papers submitted in English (up to a 10-page limit) must comply with the Smart Innovation, Systems and Technologies book series format (see Instructions for authors on the Springer website) or
  2. Papers submitted in Spanish or Portuguese (up to a maximum of 14 pages) must comply with the Tirant lo Blanch format.
  3. Extended versions of selected papers will be sent to the Special Issue “Beyond Fake News and Fact-Checking: The Political, Social and Technological Consequences of the Battle Against Misinformation and Disinformation” of the open access MDPI journal, Journalism and Media, edited by Prof. José Rúas Araujo, Prof. John P. Wihbey, and Prof. Daniel Barredo-Ibáñez (see Instructions for authors on the Journalism and Media website), or the Razón y Palabra journal. They will be published after a new peer-review.

Important dates

  • Submission of articles: April 18th, 2021.
  • Notification of acceptance: May 23rd, 2021.
  • Registration payment to ensure the inclusion of an accepted article: June 6th, 2021.
  • Presentation of final articles: June 6th, 2021.
  • Conference: September 1st to 3rd, 2021.
