Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cyclotrons represent the most successful accelerators used worldwide, both in research facilities and in applications in several disciplines: interdisciplinary physics, medical environment, neutron science, etc. The wide flexibility and the relative user-friendliness make this kind of accelerator suitable for use in the medical and industrial fields.

High-power cyclotrons play a fundamental role in providing high intensity beams for a wide range of applications such as radioisotope production, muon production facilities, and rare-isotope or exotic beams production. Until recently, the most powerful accelerator in operation was the PSI cyclotron booster, which is capable of providing a beam of up to 1.3 MW. Technology and technical challenges have been overcome to handle such a high-powered beam when developing of diagnostics device and targets as well as in operational technics, with the main goal of improving both the performance and reliability of these machines. Today, the technology of high power cyclotrons has reached a peak in subsystems design, such as for radiofrequency cavities, magnets, and injection and extraction technics, and new projects are being conducted to explore new concepts for increasing the delivered power beam to be used in new frontier research fields such as the Daedalus project [1], for sustainable energy production methods such as the accelerator driven system [2], and as a driver for nuclear waste transmutation process with small modular reactors (SMRs).

Instruments is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
