Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Plato was a philosopher, one who at times expressed extreme skepticism toward poetry and its effects on the human soul.  Yet he was also an extremely skilled writer, one whose dialogues blend literary genres and tropes, and whose interpretation demand a high degree of literary sophistication from readers.  Indeed, it is the readability and literary complexity of Plato’s dialogues that may be most responsible for their very survival, as well as for their continued influence.   This special issue of Humanities will focus on literary interpretations of Plato.  These may include:  1.) Literary readings of individual dialogues, from various literary critical and ideological perspectives, including but not limited to feminism, historicism, genre criticism, and gender theory; 2.) Manifestations of genre in multiple dialogues throughout the Platonic corpus (e.g., Plato’s uses of Comedy, Tragedy, Lyric, or Epic); 3.) Analyses of Platonic reception and influence which are primarily literary rather than philosophical.  This last category may include Plato’s reception among later Greek and Roman authors, but can also extend to the literary influence of Plato in more recent or contemporary cultures throughout the world.
