Special Issue Information
The general term ‘arthritis’ is used to describe progressive loss of smooth joint surfaces such that friction increases (along with inflammation and associated pain). Classically, arthritis types include inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis or RA), osteoarthritis (OA), crystalline arthritis (gout, pseudogout), post-traumatic arthritis (following fractures and ligament tears), septic arthritis, and degenerative disk disease resulting in spine arthritis and degradation. Diagnostic measures typically include well-performed plain radiographic imaging and even advanced imaging (CT and MRI) with the degradation of multiple intra-articular structures as part of an overall joint ‘syndrome’ of sorts. While noninvasive treatment measures include those to address the biological degradation and the body’s response to it, joint replacement is most likely successful once the biological process has progressed to the point of bone-on-bone in a patient willing to undergo surgery. While joint replacement has been refined for multiple joints, it works best when the conversion from rough to smooth again is indeed significant.
