Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue will focus on Photography in Latin America. This is a new a growing field, and the guest editors are all authors in this field. Our Special Issue will focus on revealing key tools to the academic community that help the readers know how to analyze photography in Latin America with greater success. We will focus on key Latin American photographers and offer case studies that help the readers know how to better understand the visual productions of the Global South.

In our increasingly hyper-visual world, the study of photography is of vital importance. Not only is this medium one which society across the Global North and the Global South increasingly use to document their aspirations, thoughts, adventures, and daily lives, but it is also a key requirement for communication across different forms of media. Yet the study of photography in Latin America and other areas of the Global South (Africa and other areas of Asia and the South Pacific, to mention just a few) has yet to be cultivated and explored to its full potential. While books, collections, and exhibitions cover important creators and the works in the Global North, forming a recognized visual canon and those that write on it; such coverage does not exist for the vast photographic production in Latin America and the other areas of the world previously mentioned. For this reason, the academic study of Latin American photography is urgently needed to begin to fill in the gaps our collective knowledge of the visual. Such visual studies can work to decolonize the history and our understanding of Latin America; it can begin to contribute to fully developing a truly world canon of the visual and it can allow a more democratic understanding of the composition of the world. Indeed, Latin American photography provides a key witness that provides trustworthy narratives that can be used to move past colonial thought, ideas, and practices—offering a broader, more inclusive vision of this area of the world.

This Special Issue will focus on the following four areas:

  1. Understanding the role of photography and literature.
  2. Understanding the complex interface between film and photography.
  3. Revealing how semiotics can help us to understand Latin American photography with greater depth.
  4. Offering key tools that help readers know how to gauge and improve their visual literacy.
