Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As global aging accelerates, the demand for innovative, sustainable, and person-centered elder care systems has never been greater. Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the way in which we approach aging, enhancing health predictions, enabling independent living, and supporting emotional and social well-being among older adults. This Special Issue, “AI for Smart Aging: Predictive, Assistive, and Humanized Technologies in Elder Care”, will explore how AI can be effectively applied across diverse aspects of aging and elder care, with an emphasis on real-world impacts, user experience, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

While the existing literature has extensively covered general AI applications in healthcare and robotics, relatively fewer studies have addressed the unique needs of aging populations through the lens of empathy, autonomy, and long-term usability. This Special Issue will address this gap by featuring research incorporating predictive modeling, assistive technologies, and emotion-aware systems specifically designed for elder care. By doing so, it will complement current research streams and provide a key platform for advancing AI-driven gerontechnology.

We invite original research articles, reviews, and practical case studies related to predictive models for disease progression, the early detection of cognitive decline, AI-powered assistive devices, robotic caregiving systems, and intelligent monitoring tools for aging in place. Interdisciplinary studies are particularly welcome, especially those combining technical innovation with user-centered, ethical, and socio-cultural considerations.

Ultimately, this Special Issue will bring together scholars, developers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to develop a shared vision of aging with dignity supported by compassionate and intelligent AI technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AI is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
