Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, ‘AI for Sustainable and Resilient Cyber-Physical Systems’, will focus on advancing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into complex cyber-physical systems (CPSs), including, but not limited to, smart energy systems, intelligent transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The purpose of this Special Issue is to go beyond conventional AI applications to address pressing needs for sustainability, resilience, and trustworthiness in CPS design, operation, and governance. By integrating multidisciplinary perspectives from AI, systems engineering, sustainability science, cybersecurity, and other related fields, we aim to create a comprehensive body of knowledge that will inform future research directions, guide industry adoption, and shape policy frameworks for sustainable CPS designs and deployments. This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, survey papers, and case studies that explore technical, operational, and societal challenges in AI-driven CPSs. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • AI-enhanced modeling, control, and optimization of CPSs;
  • Sustainable and energy-efficient CPS architecture;
  • Fault-tolerant and resilient AI algorithms for CPSs;
  • Security, privacy, and ethical governance in AI-enabled CPSs;
  • Cross-domain AI applications in CPSs, including, but not limited to, energy, transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, and IoT ecosystems;
  • Human-AI collaboration and decision support for CPS operations;
  • Benchmark datasets, simulation environments, and evaluation methodologies for sustainable CPS research.

Relation to the Existing Literature: While the existing literature demonstrates transformative applications of AI technologies for CPSs, most studies focus on domain-specific challenges and emphasize operational efficiency and domain-specific performance metrics. This Special Issue aims to fill this gap in the literature by addressing system-level challenges, such as sustainability, resilience, and ethical considerations. We seek contributions that bridge technical advancements and broader societal needs, complementing existing research by providing integrated perspectives that connect performance optimization with trust, security, and environmental responsibility. By positioning sustainability and resilience as central pillars, this Special Issue aims to provide a timely and valuable supplement to existing studies. It will highlight pathways for the safe, secure, and sustainable adoption of AI in CPSs, fostering emerging systems that are not only smarter, but are also more responsible and resilient in meeting the evolving demands of society.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AI is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
