Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue of “Innovative Applications of Remote Sensing in Agricultural Engineering” aims to explore the integration of novel systems, technologies, and management tools in broader remote sensing applications in agriculture. The purpose of the Special Issue is to examine how to improve remote sensing applications in agriculture by incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI); latest sensor technologies including spectral, ultrasonic, and LIDAR; data management tools; robotic platforms such as aerial, ground, and surface waters; and satellite remote sensing.

The scope of this Special Issue encompasses a wide range of topics within the realm of agriculture, with a particular focus on the integration of new systems, sensors, and technology that have potential use in remote sensing applications. It includes the use of statistical learning algorithms for data analysis, processing, and control of the systems; data interpretation; data fusion between ground sensors; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs); Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs); and satellite imagery. Innovative solutions to current remote sensing applications hold great potential for enhancing the accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness of data collection; data acquisition; information extraction from crops, soil, and water; and decision-making processes.

In relation to other literature, the Special Issue “Innovative Applications of Remote Sensing in Agricultural Engineering” serves as a platform for combining the latest advancements and research results in the use of novel systems, technologies, and methods for remote sensing in agriculture. A comprehensive overview of the current and developing state-of-the-art methodologies, new techniques, and case studies that demonstrate the benefits and practical implications of this synergy will be provided. This Special Issue bridges the gap between remote sensing technology, statistical learning, and robotic platforms, encouraging collaboration between researchers from these disciplines.

This Special Issue expands the existing literature in remote sensing applications in agriculture while providing future motivation by addressing research gaps and providing future directions for further investigation. Research opportunities, limitations, and challenges in current remote sensing applications in agriculture are assessed to provide insights into advanced remote sensing technology and applications for researchers and industry professionals.

The research areas for “Innovative Applications of Remote Sensing in Agricultural Engineering” may include the following:

  • UAV remote sensing includes RGB, multispectral, hyperspectral, LIDAR, and other innovative technologies.
  • UAV and satellite remote sensing in agriculture and natural resources for water, soil, and crop monitoring and management.
  • Agricultural system management with remote sensing.
  • Agricultural automation and decision support systems with remote sensing.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) enhanced remote sensing.
  • Remote sensing platform performance evaluation and compatibility.
  • Sensors used in remote sensing for agricultural applications.
  • Computational solutions to address and process remote sensing data.
  • Data management and processing of remote sensing data.
  • Sensor network, UAV, and satellite remote sensing integration.
  • Robotic systems for ground remote sensing in agriculture.
  • Indoor remote sensing such as food processing, controlled environments, and greenhouses.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AgriEngineering is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
