When I was a student at Wuhan University, the last captive individual of baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), a species of freshwater dolphin, was living at the Freshwater Dolphin Research Centre of Wuhan Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences [1].
I read in 2006 the sad news that baiji is functionally extinct [2]. I grew up in Hanchuan, a county next to Wuhan. This area of Hubei Province has many lakes, rivers and wetlands. Of course, there are many aquatic plants and animals in the freshwater there. I used to go fishing in summer and dig lotus root in winter.
Drawing inspiration from these events, as a publisher I would like to launch Hydrobiology (ISSN 2673-9917) [3]—an open access scientific journal. We welcome cross-disciplinary research at the molecular-, organism- and ecosystem-level on all aspects of aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity conservation ranging from freshwater fauna and flora to marine habitats. We would like to extend an invitation to the broader scientific community that shares our enthusiasm for this subject to join our Editorial Board and help us develop Hydrobiology into a successful and well-established journal.
