Abstract

This essay applies close textual analysis to news reports covering the 20 November 2025 fire at the United Nations COP30 meeting in Belém, Brazil, to demonstrate how allegory can manifest in journalistic reporting of real-world events. It argues that allegory can, intentionally or unintentionally, occur in reports given specific circumstances, existing themes in the journalistic record, and other contexts. Analysis identifies and demonstrates the recurrence of two prominent allegorical themes across reports of the COP30 fire: one attending to victims, harm, and panic and another attending to disruption and failure. Discussion highlights how such incidental allegory—different from deliberately crafted or fully accidental allegory—guides audiences to conceptualize literal events within a web of literary and conceptual contexts and, thus, holds the capacity to frame understandings and future discourse related to climate action.
