“As soon as I recognized the magnitude of the Cocoanut Grove Disaster, I called Allen [Whipple], who was in New York. This was about 1:30 in the morning. I told him the situation, that the M.G.H. and the Boston City Hospital were full of casualties. He got out of bed and caught a five o’clock train…he was there before the last dressings were applied.
