Cover Story: Many governments implemented public health control measures to limit COVID-19 transmission. The Australian state of Victoria lived through severe restrictions. These included extended school closures, travel limits, and overnight curfews. Specialist burn clinicians at the Victorian paediatric and adult burn services anecdotally reported increased patient numbers and workloads. Examining admissions data from these services revealed the number of burn-related admissions did not increase during lockdown periods. However, the injuries that did occur during lockdowns were more severe—affecting a greater percentage of the total body surface area. These injuries placed a significant burden on an already strained healthcare system, the scars of which remain for some clinicians to this day. View this paper
