Title: Tensile Adhesion Strength of APS Sprayed MgAl2O4, Al2O3 Coatings

MS No. ceramics-2065228

This work investigated the tensile adhesion strength of APS sprayed MgAl2O4, Al2O3 coatings and proved optimized height of the standard cylindrical specimen. The results are interesting and valuable. Some revisions are recommended.

The full name of APS is suggested to be given in the Title.

The definition of APS is suggested to be given in the section of Introduction, which can be referred to “Metals 9 (12), 2019, 1342 (doi: 10.3390/met9121342); Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 37, 9 2004, R86 (doi: 10.1088/0022-3727/37/9/R02); Ceramics International 47, 4, 2021, 4426-4445 (doi: 10.1016/j.ceramint.2020.10.112)”.

How about the applications of APS sprayed MgAl2O4, Al2O3 coatings?

The language should be polished.

Author Response

Good day, Sir or Madam

Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions. I have made some changes to the article.

1. Gave full name of APS in the title:

"Tensile Adhesion Strength of Atmospheric Plasma Sprayed MgAl2O4, Al2O3 Coatings"

2. Added more information about applying coatings in the introduction section:

The coatings MgAl2O4, Al2O3 are widely used as electrical insulation layer of high-voltage electrical devices, channels and parts of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator, sensors and pads of reactors and the ITER blanket modules. These types of coatings are predominantly deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) [1,2].

Referee report on “Tensile Adhesion Strength of APS Sprayed MgAl2O4, Al2O3 Coatings”

This is a quite interesting and very good paper that certainly can be recommended for publication, but clarifying and detailing some parts of the text.

1.     Line 11.  “In this scientific work,…“  Can work be non-scientific?

2.     First paragraph of the introduction contains very important information, but does not contain supporting references.  Note that  modern aspects of the use of these materials  (MgAl2O4, Al2O3 ) have recently been investigated and discussed in

a)     Popov, A. I., et al. Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms2018, 433, 93-97.

b)    Lushchik, A., et al. Distinctive features of diffusion-controlled radiation defect recombination in stoichiometric magnesium aluminate spinel single crystals and transparent polycrystalline ceramics. Scientific Reports 10, 7810 (2020).

3.     Second paragraph.  The relevance and novelty of the data raises serious concerns. All references are very old. For references [1-4], please provide proper links so that readers can get this information.

4.     Fig. 5. Whether there has been an aging of these images over time?

5.     What is the porosity of the synthesized coatings and how does porosity affect their properties? Moreover, porosity can evolve (see recent research reported Klym, H.; etc. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy Insight on Free Volume Conversion of Nanostructured MgAl2O4 Ceramics. Nanomaterials 2021, 11, 3373.

6.     The bibliography should be revised. Most of the references are old and it is not clear what has been done in recent years and how relevant this study is still.

In general, the manuscript is interesting and can be recommended for publication after constructive reflection on the above comments.
