Unravelling Gender Dynamics in Migration and Remittances: An Empirical Analysis of Asian Women's 'Exposure to Migration'

The article is about a very current and relevant topic.

Supported by extensive literature, both theoretical and empirical studies, the article explores Asian Women's 'Exposure to Migration' considering seven country’s cases.

The method is presented in general terms but requires more detail about sampling -explicating the combination of convenience and random strategies, and about the protocols used and the data analysis.

Despite the interest of the paper developed, namely the gender perspective adopted as a lens and the different countries' gender dynamics in migration and remittances, there is not sufficiently clear distinction between the subject background, theoretical perspective, findings, and discussion (and policy implications). Then the article needs a major revision in order:

to have a more concise and clear structure.

to give a clear expression to empirical data gathered for the different cases, including interviews and testimonies.

to put the discussion in perspective facing other empirical studies and analytical lenses.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The main goal of the paper is to analyse whether exposure to migration has anything to do with gender dynamics, by using the analytical framework of ‘exposure to migration’, and its family dimension, conceptualized by Ullah (2013) with empirical support.

The methodological design is based on interviews with women from a select of countries in Asia. But the methodological section scarcely presents how the sample has been recruited (they just say “combination of convenience and random samplings methods”) and selection criteria countries. And, besides, they don’t state the precise methods of analysis:  which is the connexion between the analysis of the interviews and the results presented.  The author(s) refer to the “findings of the study” but they are not clearly specified. So, it’s not possible to consider if the discussion of findings is coherent, balanced and compelling

This an original study of an important topic. It is ambitious in  the number of countries covered. It appears to be methodologically sound and is clearly argued. The findings are also clear. Because it is a previously under-researched area it identifies an number of areas for future research which are usefully described in the conclusion. A good beginning to a significant research field.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The authors introduced significant improvements in the article considering the comments appraisal.

The authors clarify and detail the sampling, empirical data gathered and qualitative analysis.

The authors also introduced supplementary development in the theoretical framework of the study.

Considering the qualitative nature of the research it is very relevant to give voice to the migrant’s experience. The authors introduced in the present version some quotes from the interviews. This positive aspect should be more extensive in the data presentation. Still, I can understand that this will imply a deep restructuring of the design of the article’s section, but I would like to recommend that the authors go deeper in this way.
