Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This work introduced the enzymatic one-pot hydrolysis of extracted sugar beet press pulp after solid-state fermentation with an engineered Aspergillus niger strain. The theme is reasonably designed and interesting. However, the overall writing needs to be improved. The comments are as following.

1. Figures 5 and 6: Figures a and b need abscissa axis name as “Hydrolysis time”

2. 3.3. Solid-State Fermentation with engineered A. niger: the authors should provide the data without engineered A. niger and with normal A. niger, and add the comparative discussion.

3. Figure 3: Why the biomass dry weight increase from about 20 g/L to 120 g/L at 24 h?Please add discussion.

Reviewer 2 Report

This manuscript is about the use of beetroot waste as substrate for solid-state fermentation and for enzymatic hydrolysis, and I have some considerations:

- In item 2.5, was there stirring or not in fermentation? It gives an idea that in beginning there was no stirring, but the, after some time, the stirring has occurred. Explain please

- In item 2.6, then addition of beetroot waste after 24h of what? After fermentation? After temperature was equilibrated at 50.C?

- In conclusion, I think authors need to explore more about the use of hydrolysated beetroot waste in some applications, maybe substrate to other fermentations
