Author Response

Firstly thank you for your review of our paper.

I have incorporated the results of the Cagnano et al 2019 paper into the Discussion L 352-358.

I have endeavored to be a bit more equivocal regarding the partitioning of the loline alkaloids in the phloem and xylem. Clearly there is more work to do there.

L135-141 Location of experiment added

L186 Sentence fixed

L257 Asterisk fixed

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript by authors is well written and explained clearly with the results.

I would like to suggest authors to add more economic importance of aphids in introduction section for the readers.

Line 81. Add year

Line 148. All experiments were set up in randomized replicate rows..... please mentioned total number of samples and replicate.

Use separate section for statistical analysis inside materials and methods.

Author Response

Thank you for your review.

I have inserted more information into the Introduction regarding the economic importance of aphid.

L81 Add year - see L83

L148 The number of replicates per treatment is now given on L155.

The request for a separate section on statistics has not been actioned. Given the  different experiments carried out for this paper I made the decision when I wrote the paper that it would be easier for the reader to have the description of the statistics placed in the relevant methods section.
