Exploratory Study on Plasticiser Intake During Intermittent Fasting: Effects on Weight, Glycaemic Control and Vitamin D Levels in Type 2 Diabetes
Highlights
- Ramadan time-restricted feeding (TRF) altered plasticiser metabolite profiles in type 2 diabetes (T2D) and controls.
- Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) metabolites were higher over time in T2D compared to controls after adjusted analyses.
- Plasticiser metabolite level changes were linked to glycosylated haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and vitamin D (VitD) but not body mass index (BMI), with no significant changes in VitD, weight, or glycaemic control in T2D.
- Findings indicate metabolic and/or exposure changes during TRF, with exposure changes potentially related to food storage practices.
- The results highlight a potential interaction between metabolic health (HbA1c, VitD) and environmental chemical exposure.
- The study indicates that individuals with T2D may be more susceptible to changes in plasticiser levels during TRF.
