Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders in childhood and adolescence. Review and recommendations on diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders in childhood and adolescence demands specific knowledge of the particular features of symptomatology and approaches in this age group. The diagnostic criteria in the handbooks are only conditionally valid in young patients and their application must be adapted to the patient’s age. Clinically relevant atypical eating disorders have a prevalence similar to the classic forms of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. High rates of comorbidity exist, in particular with anxiety states and also depression. Monitoring of concomitant somatic symptoms is indispensable. Early detection and treatment improve prognosis. Treatment is multidisciplinary and multimodal. Transdiagnostic approaches take into account the high migration rate of eating disorder diagnoses. There is evidence for the efficacy of family-based therapy in adolescents with anorexia nervosa. In individual psychotherapy motivational treatment, and in bulimia nervosa cognitive behavioural therapy, are in the forefront. Fluoxetine has proved effective in the treatment of binge eating in bulimia nervosa. Full article

This review introduces neurologists to the salient features of osteoporosis risk assessment and treatment. Osteoporosis is a form of progressive bone fragility, which in turn leads to an increased risk of fractures (even after minor trauma). Apart from old age and postmenopausal status, a number of additional risk factors for osteoporotic (fragility) fractures have been identified. These risk factors are particularly common among patients with chronic neurologic disease, for example due to decreased mobility (in combination with an increased risk of falls), and the detrimental effects of long-term medication with steroids or anti-epileptic drugs. A key element in preventing falls and fractures is an adequate level of vitamin D (which may also be useful in preventing multiple sclerosis). Patients who have suffered a fragility fracture need additional medication to prevent further bone loss. The various drugs that can be used for this purpose and the Swiss prescribing restrictions are discussed. Full article
