Abstract

Grouping, classification, and logical reasoning activities in early childhood education have traditionally been grounded in classical set theory and binary logic. Fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic extend this framework by allowing degrees of membership and truth values between the two binary extremes, giving rise to fuzzy thinking. Recent studies indicate that children as young as four years old already show early manifestations of this type of thinking. However, empirical research has largely focused on graduality, while the broader conceptual principles underlying fuzzy thinking in early childhood remain insufficiently articulated. This article revisits and extends a previously developed conceptual framework, leading to three main contributions. First, it proposes the framework’s principles as potential learning goals for the conceptual development of fuzzy thinking. Second, it introduces picture books as artistic mediators of these principles through narrative and visual representations. Third, it presents Will I Eat a Frog Today? as a picture book deliberately designed to mediate the first two principles through narrative and illustration. Overall, the article reconceptualizes fuzzy thinking in early childhood in terms of conceptual development rather than mathematical formalization, providing a foundation for future research and educational resource design.
