Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The paper deals with the German language development as second language. The sample consists of children aged 3 to 7 years. The level of competence in the second language is recorded at four measurement points and a latent class analysis is used to classify development processes. In the second step, factors influencing the class assignment are determined.

All in all, the paper is coherent and comprehensible. Both the theoretical analysis and the methodological implementation are appropriate for the question. The topic is presented theoretically in line with the current state of knowledge and the most important available findings are summarized. The methodological implementation of the question is explained in a fully comprehensible manner. The tables and the illustration are extremely useful for understanding the text, especially the part of the results.

The analysis strategy chosen is, in principle, appropriate in view of the question and the available data. I first wondered whether the choice of the four-classes solution was appropriate. The statistical indicators are by no means unambiguous here. However, the authors themselves recognize this and give a detailed justification for the choice of the four-classes solution. The reasoning here is very consistent and I fully agree with this reasoning.

In the discussion part, the results are summarized and discussed taking into account the state of research. Implications and conclusions are formulated according to the results of the paper.

The paper is coherent, fully comprehensible and methodologically appropriate. Therefore, I have no comments that could further increase the quality of the paper and I would like to thank you very much for this exciting reading.
